Megjegyzések:PHENIX reports differential cross sections of mu mu pairs from semileptonic heavy-flavor decays and the Drell-Yan production mechanism measured in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV at forward and backward rapidity (1.2 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.2). The mu mu pairs from c (c) over bar, b (b) over bar, and Drell-Yan are separated using a template fit to unlike- and like-sign muon pair spectra in mass and p(T). The azimuthal opening angle correlation between the muons from c (c ) over bar and b (b) over bar decays and the pair-p(T) distributions are compared to distributions generated using PYTHIA and POWHEG models, which both include next-to-leading order processes. The measured distributions for pairs from a are consistent with PYTHIA calculations. The c (c) over bar data present narrower azimuthal correlations and softer p(T) distributions compared to distributions generated from POWHEG. The b (b ) over bar data are well described by both models. The extrapolated total cross section for bottom production is 3.75 +/- 0.24(stat) +/-(0.35)(0.50) (syst) +/- 0.45(global) [mu b], which is consistent with previous measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in the same system at the same collision energy and is approximately a factor of 2 higher than the central value calculated with theoretical models. The measured Drell-Yan cross section is in good agreement with next-to-leading-order quantum-chromodynamics calculations.

Megjegyzések:Measurements of the differential production of electrons from open-heavy-flavor hadrons with charm-and bottom-quark content in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV are presented. The measurements proceed through displaced-vertex analyses of electron tracks from the semileptonic decay of charm and bottom hadrons using the PHENIX silicon-vertex detector. The relative contribution of electrons from bottom decays to inclusive heavy-flavor-electron production is found to be consistent with fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative-QCD calculations within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. These new measurements in p + p collisions provide a precision baseline for comparable forthcoming measurements in A + A collisions.

Dátum:2019
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search for narrow, low-mass, scalar, and pseudoscalar resonances decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs is presented. The search is based on events recorded in root s = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC, collected in 2016, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The search selects events in which the resonance would be produced with high transverse momentum because of the presence of initial- or final-state radiation. In such events, the decay products of the resonance would be reconstructed as a single large-radius jet with high mass and two-prong substructure. A potential signal would be identified as a narrow excess in the jet invariant mass spectrum. No evidence for such a resonance is observed within the mass range from 50 to 350 GeV, and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the cross section and branching fraction to a bottom quark-antiquark pair. These constitute the first constraints from the LHC on exotic bottom quark-antiquark resonances with masses below 325 GeV.

Megjegyzések:A measurement of jet substructure observables is presented using t (t) over bar events in the lepton + jets channel from proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). Multiple jet substructure observables are measured for jets identified as bottom, light-quark, and gluon jets, as well as for inclusive jets (no flavor information). The results are unfolded to the particle level and compared to next-to-leading-order predictions from POWHEG interfaced with the parton shower generators PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7, as well as from SHERPA 2 and DIRE 2. Avalue of the strong coupling at the Z boson mass, alpha(S)(m(Z)) = 0.115(-0.013)(+0.015), is extracted from the substructure data at leading-order plus leading-log accuracy.

Cím:Search for long-lived particles with displaced vertices in multijet eventsin proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / Sirunyan, A. M., CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2018
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:Results are reported from a search for long-lived particles in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV delivered by the CERN LHC and collected by the CMS experiment. The data sample, which was recorded during 2015 and 2016, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 38.5 fb(-1). This search uses benchmark signal models in which long-lived particles are pair-produced and each decays into two or more quarks, leading to a signal with multiple jets and two displaced vertices composed of many tracks. No events with two well-separated high-track-multiplicity vertices are observed. Upper limits are placed on models of R-parity violating supersymmetry in which the long-lived particles are neutralinos or gluinos decaying solely into multijet final states or top squarks decaying solely into dijet final states. For neutralino, gluino, or top squark masses between 800 and 2600 GeV and mean proper decay lengths between 1 and 40 mm, the analysis excludes cross sections above 0.3 fb at 95% confidence level. Gluino and top squark masses are excluded below 2200 and 1400 GeV, respectively, for mean proper decay lengths between 0.6 and 80 mm. A method is provided for extending the results to other models with pair-produced long-lived particles.

Cím:Search for associated production of a Higgs boson and a single top quark in proton-proton collisions at root{s} = 13 TeV / A. M. Sirunyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2019
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search is presented for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a single top quark, based on data collected in 2016 by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The production cross section for this process is highly sensitive to the absolute values of the top quark Yukawa coupling, y(t); the Higgs boson coupling to vector bosons, g(HVV); and, uniquely, their relative sign. Analyses using multilepton signatures, targeting H -> WW, H -> tau tau, and H -> ZZ decay modes, and signatures with a single lepton and a b (b) over bar pair, targeting the H -> b (b) over bar decay, are combined with a reinterpretation of a measurement in the H -> gamma gamma channel to constrain y(t). For a standard model-like value of g(HVV), the data favor positive values of y(t) and exclude values of y(t) below about -0.9y(t)(SM).

Cím:Measurements of the Higgs boson width and anomalous HVV couplings from on-shell and off-shell production in the four-lepton final state / A. M. Sirunyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2019
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:Studies of on-shell and off-shell Higgs boson production in the four-lepton final state are presented, using data from the CMS experiment at the LHC that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 80.2 fb(-1) at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Joint constraints are set on the Higgs boson total width and parameters that express its anomalous couplings to two electroweak vector bosons. These results are combined with those obtained from the data collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.1 and 19.7 fb(-1), respectively. Kinematic information from the decay particles and the associated jets are combined using matrix element techniques to identify the production mechanism and to increase sensitivity to the Higgs boson couplings in both production and decay. The constraints on anomalous HVV couplings are found to be consistent with the standard model expectation in both the on-shell and off-shell regions. Under the assumption of a coupling structure similar to that in the standard model, the Higgs boson width is constrained to be 3.2(-2.2)(+2.8)MeV while the expected constraint based on simulation is 4.1(-4.0)(+5.0) MeV. The constraints on the width remain similar with the inclusion of the tested anomalous HVV interactions.

Megjegyzések:A search for the production of events containing three W bosons predicted by the standard model is reported. The search is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). The search is performed in final states with three leptons (electrons or muons), or with two same-charge leptons plus two jets. The observed (expected) significance of the signal for (WWW -/+)-W-+/--W-+/- production is 0.60 (1.78) standard deviations, and the ratio of the measured signal yield to that expected from the standard model is 0.34(-0.34)(+0.62) . Limits are placed on three anomalous quartic gauge couplings and on the production of massive axionlike particles.

ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search for vectorlike leptons in multilepton final states is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 and 2017. Events are categorized by the multiplicity of electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying [tau] leptons. The missing transverse momentum and the scalar sum of the lepton transverse momenta are used to distinguish the signal from background. The observed results are consistent with the expectations from the standard model hypothesis. The existence of a vectorlike lepton doublet, coupling to the third-generation standard model leptons in the mass range of 120-790 GeV, is excluded at 95% confidence level. These are the most stringent limits yet on the production of a vectorlike lepton doublet, coupling to the third-generation standard model leptons.

Megjegyzések:A search is presented for heavy bosons decaying to Z(nu(nu) over bar )V(q (q) over bar'), where V can be a W or a Z boson. A sample of proton-proton collision data at root sp = 13 TeV was collected by the CMS experiment during 2016-2018. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The event categorization is based on the presence of high-momentum jets in the forward region to identify production through weak vector boson fusion. Additional categorization uses jet substructure techniques and the presence of large missing transverse momentum to identify W and Z bosons decaying to quarks and neutrinos, respectively. The dominant standard model backgrounds are estimated using data taken from control regions. The results are interpreted in terms of radion, W' boson, and graviton models, under the assumption that these bosons are produced via gluon-gluon fusion, Drell-Yan, or weak vector boson fusion processes. No evidence is found for physics beyond the standard model. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on various types of hypothetical new bosons. Observed (expected) exclusion limits on the masses of these bosons range from 1.2 to 4.0 (1.1 to 3.7) TeV.

Dátum:2022
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search for new heavy resonances decaying to pairs of bosons (WW, WZ, or WH) is presented. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1. One of the bosons is required to be a W boson decaying to an electron or muon and a neutrino, while the other boson is required to be reconstructed as a single jet with mass and substructure compatible with a quark pair from a W, Z, or Higgs boson decay. The search is performed in the resonance mass range between 1.0 and 4.5 TeV and includes a specific search for resonances produced via vector boson fusion. The signal is extracted using a two-dimensional maximum likelihood fit to the jet mass and the diboson invariant mass distributions. No significant excess is observed above the estimated background. Model-independent upper limits on the production cross sections of spin-0, spin-1, and spin-2 heavy resonances are derived as functions of the resonance mass and are interpreted in the context of bulk radion, heavy vector triplet, and bulk graviton models. The reported bounds are the most stringent to date.

Megjegyzések:For the first time at LHC energies, the forward rapidity gap spectra from proton-lead collisions for both proton and lead dissociation processes are presented. The analysis is performed over 10.4 units of pseudorapidity at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root{S_NN}=8.16 TeV, almost 300 times higher than in previous measurements of diffractive production in proton-nucleus collisions. For lead dissociation processes, which correspond to the pomeron-lead event topology, the EPOS-LHC generator predictions are a factor of 2 below the data, but the model gives a reasonable description of the rapidity gap spectrum shape. For the pomeron-proton topology, the EPOS-LHC, QGSJET II, and HIJING predictions are all at least a factor of 5 lower than the data. The latter effect might be explained by a significant contribution of ultraperipheral photoproduction events mimicking the signature of diffractive processes. These data may be of significant help in understanding the high energy limit of quantum chromodynamics and for modeling cosmic ray air showers.
