Megjegyzések:PHENIX reports differential cross sections of mu mu pairs from semileptonic heavy-flavor decays and the Drell-Yan production mechanism measured in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV at forward and backward rapidity (1.2 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.2). The mu mu pairs from c (c) over bar, b (b) over bar, and Drell-Yan are separated using a template fit to unlike- and like-sign muon pair spectra in mass and p(T). The azimuthal opening angle correlation between the muons from c (c ) over bar and b (b) over bar decays and the pair-p(T) distributions are compared to distributions generated using PYTHIA and POWHEG models, which both include next-to-leading order processes. The measured distributions for pairs from a are consistent with PYTHIA calculations. The c (c) over bar data present narrower azimuthal correlations and softer p(T) distributions compared to distributions generated from POWHEG. The b (b ) over bar data are well described by both models. The extrapolated total cross section for bottom production is 3.75 +/- 0.24(stat) +/-(0.35)(0.50) (syst) +/- 0.45(global) [mu b], which is consistent with previous measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in the same system at the same collision energy and is approximately a factor of 2 higher than the central value calculated with theoretical models. The measured Drell-Yan cross section is in good agreement with next-to-leading-order quantum-chromodynamics calculations.

Megjegyzések:Measurements of the differential production of electrons from open-heavy-flavor hadrons with charm-and bottom-quark content in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV are presented. The measurements proceed through displaced-vertex analyses of electron tracks from the semileptonic decay of charm and bottom hadrons using the PHENIX silicon-vertex detector. The relative contribution of electrons from bottom decays to inclusive heavy-flavor-electron production is found to be consistent with fixed-order-plus-next-to-leading-log perturbative-QCD calculations within experimental and theoretical uncertainties. These new measurements in p + p collisions provide a precision baseline for comparable forthcoming measurements in A + A collisions.

Megjegyzések:We present measurements of azimuthal correlations of charged hadron pairs in root s(NN) = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions for the trigger and associated particle transverse-momentum ranges of 1 < p(T)(t) < 10 GeV/c and 0.5 < p(T)(a) < 10 GeV/c. After subtraction of an underlying event using a model that includes higher-order azimuthal anisotropy v(2), v(3,) and v(4), the away-side yield of the highest trigger-p(T)(p(T)(t) > 4 GeV/c) correlations is suppressed compared with that of correlations measured in p + p collisions. At the lowest associated particle p(T)(0.5 < p(T)(a) < 1 GeV/c), the away-side shape and yield are modified relative to those in p + p collisions. These observations are consistent with the scenario of radiative-jet energy loss. For the low-p(T) trigger correlations (2 < p(T)(t) < 4 GeV/c), a finite away-side yield exists and we explore the dependence of the shape of the away-side within the context of an underlying-event model. Correlations are also studied differentially versus event-plane angle Psi(2) and Psi(3). The angular correlations show an asymmetry when selecting the sign of the difference between the trigger-particle azimuthal angle and the Psi(2) event plane. This asymmetry and the measured suppression of the pair yield out-of-plane is consistent with a path-length-dependent energy loss. No Psi(3) dependence can be resolved within experimental uncertainties.

Megjegyzések:Asymmetric nuclear collisions of p + Al, p + Au, d + Au, and He-3 + Au at root S-NN = 200 GeV provide an excellent laboratory for understanding particle production, as well as exploring interactions among these particles after their initial creation in the collision. We present measurements of charged hadron production dN(ch)/d eta in all such collision systems over a broad pseudorapidity range and as a function of collision multiplicity. A simple wounded quark model is remarkably successful at describing the full data set. We also measure the elliptic flow 12 over a similarly broad pseudorapidity range. These measurements provide key constraints on models of particle emission and their translation into flow.

Cím:Beam Energy and Centrality Dependence of Direct-Photon Emission from Ultrarelativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions / PHENIX Collaboration
Dátum:2019
ISSN:0031-9007
Megjegyzések:The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum (0.4 < p(T) < 3 GeV/c) direct-photon yields from Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) =39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au +horn Au collisions at root s(NN) =200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable dN(ch)/d(eta) eveals that the low-momentum (> 1 GeV= c) direct-photon yield dN(gamma)(dir)/d(eta) is a smooth function f dN(ch)/d eta and can be well described as proportional to (dN(ch)/d(eta))(alpha) with a approximate to 1.25. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different A thorn A collision systems. At a given beam energy, the scaling also holds for high p(T) (> 5 GeV= c), but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional root s(NN) -dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:0031-9007
Megjegyzések:We present measurements of the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry A_{LL} of direct-photon production in [vector]p+[vector]p collisions at root{s}=510 GeV. The measurements have been performed at midrapidity (|[eta]| < 0.25) with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At relativistic energies, direct photons are dominantly produced from the initial quark-gluon hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force at leading order. Therefore, at root{s}=510 GeV, where leading-order-effects dominate, these measurements provide clean and direct access to the gluon helicity in the polarized proton in the gluon-momentum-fraction range 0.02 < x < 0.08, with direct sensitivity to the sign of the gluon contribution.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:Presented are the first measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries (A_N) for neutral pions and eta mesons in p + Au and p + Al collisions at root{s_NN}=200 GeV in the pseudorapidity range |[eta]| < 0.35 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The asymmetries are consistent with zero, similar to those for midrapidity neutral pions and eta mesons produced in p + p collisions. These measurements show no evidence of additional effects that could potentially arise from the more complex partonic environment present in proton-nucleus collisions.

Dátum:2023

Megjegyzések:The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of phi-meson production in asymmetric Cu + Au collisions at root sNN = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at root sNN = 193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the phi -> K+K- decay channel at midrapidity |n| < 0.35. Features of phi -meson production measured in Cu + Cu, Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the 0 meson in Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear -overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate pT, phi-meson production measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high p(T) the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. The elliptic flow for 0 mesons measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is well described by a (2+1)-dimensional viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity eta/s = 1/4 pi.

Dátum:2023

Megjegyzések:The measurement of direct photons from Au + Au collisions at ,/sNN = 39 and 62.4 GeV in the transverse-momentum range 0.4 < pT < 3 Gev/c is presented by the PHENIX collaboration at the BNLRelativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant direct-photon yield is observed in both collision systems. A universal scaling is observed when the direct-photon pT spectra for different center-of-mass energies and for different centrality selections at ,/sNN = 62.4 GeV is scaled with (dNch/d eta)alpha for alpha = 1.21 +/- 0.04. This scaling also holds true for direct-photon spectra from Au + Au collisions at ,/sNN = 200 GeV measured earlier by PHENIX, as well as the spectra from Pb + Pb at ,/sNN = 2760 GeV published by ALICE. The scaling power alpha seems to be independent of pT, center of mass energy, and collision centrality. The spectra from different collision energies have a similar shape up to pT of 2 Gev/c. The spectra have a local inverse slope Teff increasing with pT of 0.174 +/- 0.018 Gev/c in the range 0.4 < pT < 1.3 Gev/c and increasing to 0.289 +/- 0.024 Gev/c for 0.9 < pT < 2.1 Gev/c. The observed similarity of low-pT direct-photon production from ,/sNN = 39 to 2760 GeV suggests a common source of direct photons for the different collision energies and event centrality selections, and suggests a comparable space-time evolution of direct-photon emission.

Dátum:2023

Megjegyzések:Recently, the PHENIX Collaboration has published second-and third-harmonic Fourier coefficients v2 and v3 for midrapidity (|eta| < 0.35) charged hadrons in 0%-5% central p + Au, d + Au, and 3He +Au collisions at N/sNN = 200 GeV, utilizing three sets of two-particle correlations for two detector combinations with different pseudorapidity acceptance [Acharya et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, 024901 (2022)]. This paper extends these measurements of v2 to all centralities in p + Au, d + Au, and 3He +Au collisions, as well as p + p collisions, as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and event multiplicity. The kinematic dependence of v2 is quantified as the ratio R of v2 between the two detector combinations as a function of event multiplicity for 0.5 < pT < 1 and 2 < pT < 2.5 GeV/c. A multiphase-transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the observed v2 in most-central to midcentral d + Au and 3He +Au collisions. However, the AMPT model systematically overestimates the measurements in p + p, p + Au, and peripheral d + Au and 3He +Au collisions, indicating a higher nonflow contribution in the AMPT model than in the experimental data. The AMPT model fails to describe the observed R for 0.5 < pT < 1 GeV/c, but there is qualitative agreement with the measurements for 2 < pT < 2.5 GeV/c.

Megjegyzések:Polarized proton-proton collisions provide leading-order access to gluons, presenting an opportunity to constrain gluon spin-momentum correlations within transversely polarized protons and enhance our understanding of the three-dimensional structure of the proton. Midrapidity open-heavy-flavor production ffiffiat p s1/4 200 GeV is dominated by gluon-gluon fusion, providing heightened sensitivity to gluon dynamics relative to other production channels. Transverse single-spin asymmetries of positrons and electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays are measured at midrapidity using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These charge-separated measurements are sensitive to gluon correlators that can in principle be related to gluon orbital angular momentum via model calculations. Explicit constraints on gluon correlators are extracted for two separate models, one of which had not been constrained previously.
