Megjegyzések:A search is presented for heavy bosons decaying to Z(nu(nu) over bar )V(q (q) over bar'), where V can be a W or a Z boson. A sample of proton-proton collision data at root sp = 13 TeV was collected by the CMS experiment during 2016-2018. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The event categorization is based on the presence of high-momentum jets in the forward region to identify production through weak vector boson fusion. Additional categorization uses jet substructure techniques and the presence of large missing transverse momentum to identify W and Z bosons decaying to quarks and neutrinos, respectively. The dominant standard model backgrounds are estimated using data taken from control regions. The results are interpreted in terms of radion, W' boson, and graviton models, under the assumption that these bosons are produced via gluon-gluon fusion, Drell-Yan, or weak vector boson fusion processes. No evidence is found for physics beyond the standard model. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on various types of hypothetical new bosons. Observed (expected) exclusion limits on the masses of these bosons range from 1.2 to 4.0 (1.1 to 3.7) TeV.

Cím:Search for resonances decaying to three W bosons in proton-proton collisions at root{s} = 13 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2022
ISSN:0031-9007
Megjegyzések:A search for resonances decaying into a W boson and a radion, where the radion decays into two W bosons, is presented. The data analyzed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1 recorded in proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at s=13 TeV. One isolated charged lepton is required, together with missing transverse momentum and one or two massive large-radius jets, containing the decay products of either two or one W bosons, respectively. No excess over the background estimation is observed. The results are combined with those from a complementary channel with an all-hadronic final state, described in an accompanying paper. Limits are set on parameters of an extended warped extra-dimensional model. These searches are the first of their kind at the LHC.

Cím:Probing charm quark dynamics via multiparticle correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at root{s}_(NN) = 5.02 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2022
ISSN:0031-9007
Megjegyzések:Multiparticle azimuthal correlations of prompt D^0 mesons are measured in Pb-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of root{s}_(NN)=5.02 TeV. For the first time, a four-particle cumulant method is used to extract the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (v_2) of D^0 mesons as a function of event centrality and the D0 transverse momentum. The ratios of the four-particle v_2 values to previously measured two-particle cumulant results provide direct experimental access to event-by-event fluctuations of charm quark azimuthal anisotropies. These ratios are also found to be comparable to those of inclusive charged particles in the event. However, hints of deviations are seen in the most central and peripheral collisions. To investigate the origin of flow fluctuations in the charm sector, these measurements are compared to a model implementing fluctuations of charm quark energy loss via collisional or radiative processes in the quark-gluon plasma. These models cannot quantitatively describe the data over the full transverse momentum and centrality ranges, although the calculations with collisional energy loss provide a better description of the data.

Cím:Search for flavor-changing neutral current interactions of the top quark and Higgs boson in final states with two photons in proton-proton collisions at root{s} = 13 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2022
ISSN:0031-9007
Megjegyzések:Proton-proton interactions resulting in final states with two photons are studied in a search for the signature of flavor-changing neutral current interactions of top quarks (t) and Higgs bosons (H). The analysis is based on data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1. No significant excess above the background prediction is observed. Upper limits on the branching fractions (B) of the top quark decaying to a Higgs boson and an up (u) or charm (c) quark are derived through a binned fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum. The observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limits are found to be 0.019% (0.031%) for B(t->Hu) and 0.073% (0.051%) for B(t->Hc). These are the strictest upper limits yet determined.

Cím:Search for heavy resonances decaying to WW, WZ, or WH boson pairs in a final state consisting of a lepton and a large-radius jet in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2022
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search for new heavy resonances decaying to pairs of bosons (WW, WZ, or WH) is presented. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1. One of the bosons is required to be a W boson decaying to an electron or muon and a neutrino, while the other boson is required to be reconstructed as a single jet with mass and substructure compatible with a quark pair from a W, Z, or Higgs boson decay. The search is performed in the resonance mass range between 1.0 and 4.5 TeV and includes a specific search for resonances produced via vector boson fusion. The signal is extracted using a two-dimensional maximum likelihood fit to the jet mass and the diboson invariant mass distributions. No significant excess is observed above the estimated background. Model-independent upper limits on the production cross sections of spin-0, spin-1, and spin-2 heavy resonances are derived as functions of the resonance mass and are interpreted in the context of bulk radion, heavy vector triplet, and bulk graviton models. The reported bounds are the most stringent to date.

Cím:Measurement of the Inclusive and Differential Higgs Boson Production Cross Sections in the Decay Mode to a Pair of [tau] Leptons in pp Collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2022
ISSN:0031-9007
Megjegyzések:Measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections of the Higgs boson are presented, using the [tau] lepton decay channel. The differential cross sections are measured as functions of the Higgs boson transverse momentum, jet multiplicity, and transverse momentum of the leading jet in the event, if any. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1. These are the first differential measurements of the Higgs boson cross section in the final state of two [tau] leptons. In final states with a large jet multiplicity or with a Lorentz-boosted Higgs boson, these measurements constitute a significant improvement over measurements performed in other final states.

Cím:First measurement of the forward rapidity gap distribution in p Pb collisions at root{s_NN}=8.16 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:For the first time at LHC energies, the forward rapidity gap spectra from proton-lead collisions for both proton and lead dissociation processes are presented. The analysis is performed over 10.4 units of pseudorapidity at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root{S_NN}=8.16 TeV, almost 300 times higher than in previous measurements of diffractive production in proton-nucleus collisions. For lead dissociation processes, which correspond to the pomeron-lead event topology, the EPOS-LHC generator predictions are a factor of 2 below the data, but the model gives a reasonable description of the rapidity gap spectrum shape. For the pomeron-proton topology, the EPOS-LHC, QGSJET II, and HIJING predictions are all at least a factor of 5 lower than the data. The latter effect might be explained by a significant contribution of ultraperipheral photoproduction events mimicking the signature of diffractive processes. These data may be of significant help in understanding the high energy limit of quantum chromodynamics and for modeling cosmic ray air showers.

Cím:Search for direct pair production of supersymmetric partners of [tau] leptons in the final state with two hadronically decaying [tau] leptons and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search for the direct production of a pair of [tau] sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of [tau] leptons, is presented. Each [tau] slepton is assumed to decay to a [tau] lepton and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), which is assumed to be stable and to not interact in the detector, leading to an imbalance in the total reconstructed transverse momentum. The search is carried out in events identified as containing two [tau] leptons, each decaying to one or more hadrons and a neutrino, and significant transverse momentum imbalance. In addition to scenarios in which the [tau] sleptons decay promptly, the search also addresses scenarios in which the [tau] sleptons have sufficiently long lifetimes to give rise to nonprompt [tau] leptons. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector in 2016-2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1}. No significant excess is seen with respect to standard model expectations. Upper limits on cross sections for the pair production of [tau] sleptons are obtained in the framework of simplified models. In a scenario in which the [tau] sleptons are superpartners of left-handed [tau] leptons, and each undergoes a prompt decay to a [tau] lepton and a nearly massless LSP, [tau] slepton masses between 115 and 340 GeV are excluded. In a scenario in which the lifetime of the [tau] sleptons corresponds to c[tau]_0 = 0.1 mm, where [tau]_0 represents the mean proper lifetime of the [tau] slepton, masses between 150 and 220 GeV are excluded.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search is performed for narrow resonances decaying to final states of two jets, with at least one jet originating from a b quark, in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1} collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Jets originating from energetic b hadrons are identified through a b-tagging algorithm that utilizes a deep neural network or the presence of a muon inside a jet. The invariant mass spectrum of jet pairs is well described by a smooth parametrization and no evidence for the production of new particles is observed. Upper limits on the production cross section are set for excited b quarks and other resonances decaying to dijet final states containing b quarks. These limits exclude at 95% confidence level models of Z' bosons with masses from 1.8 TeV to 2.4 TeV and of excited b quarks with masses from 1.8 TeV to 4.0 TeV. This is the most stringent exclusion of excited b quarks to date.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:0031-9007
Megjegyzések:The first search exploiting the vector boson fusion process to probe heavy Majorana neutrinos and the Weinberg operator at the LHC is presented. The search is performed in the same-sign dimuon final state using a proton-proton collision dataset recorded at root{s}=13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1}. The results are found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. For heavy Majorana neutrinos, constraints on the squared mixing element between the muon and the heavy neutrino are derived in the heavy neutrino mass range 50 GeV-25 TeV; for masses above 650 GeV these are the most stringent constraints from searches at the LHC to date. A first test of the Weinberg operator at colliders provides an observed upper limit at 95% confidence level on the effective [mu][mu] Majorana neutrino mass of 10.8 GeV.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:0031-9007
Megjegyzések:We present an observation of photon-photon production of [tau] lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404 [mu]b^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root{s_{NN}}=5.02 TeV. The [gamma][gamma]-->[tau]^{+}[tau]^{-} process is observed for [tau]^{+}[tau]^{-} events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is [sigma]([gamma][gamma]-->[tau]^{+}[tau]^{-})=4.8+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.5(syst) [mu]b, where the second (third) term corresponds to the statistical (systematic) uncertainty in [sigma]([gamma][gamma]-->[tau]^{+}[tau]^{-}) in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using [sigma]([gamma][gamma]-->[tau]^{+}[tau]^{-}), we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the [tau] lepton of a_{[tau]}=0.001_{-0.089}^{+0.055}.
