A magbankot alacsony sűrűségűnek találtuk (kb. 1270 db/m2). The tree decay started in the 80's restructured the forest of the Síkfőkút Project The cover of the shrub layer increased, while the herb's cover decreased. The herb layer cover was 21% in 1973. This decreased to 6% by 1988, and it remained under 8%. We examined the herb seed bank of the forest with germination method. Our objective was to answer how dense was the seed bank of the forest, what was the similarity to the vegetation and what role plays in the regeneration of the forest herb layer. We found relatively low seed bank density with ca. 1270 seed/m?. There were 314 individuals of 33 species germinated from the seed concentrated soil samples. The similarity (Srenson-index) between the aboveground and belowground vegetation was 44%. The 80% of seeds was ruderal in the soil samples. 86% of them were long-term persistent. The most frequent was the Chenopodium polyspermum, probably reflecting the agricultural activity near the area. Our results suggest that the forest herb species form a low dense transient and short-term persistent seed bank (ca.120 seeds/m?).

Megjegyzések:Intensification of land use in the last few decades resulted in an increased rate of fragmentation of natural foresthabitats. With decreased patch size but increased total borderline length the influence of the surroundings also increased. Theextent of influence is especially crucial where the forest stands are adjacent to agricultural lands. We studied the vegetation(cover) and seed bank (soil samples, seedling emergence) along adjacent stands of an abandoned vineyard and edge and interiorof an oak forest community (Quercetum petraeae-cerris) widespread in Central-Europe, using five transects (16 m?? plots alongeach transect). We asked the following questions: (i) How do vegetation and seed bank composition differ between the vineyardand forest interior and (ii) which weeds are able to penetrate into the forest herbaceous understorey vegetation and seed banksfrom the vineyard? In total, 15 phanaerophytes and 147 herbs were detected. Negatively associated with canopy shading, herbcover proved the lowest in the forest inferior. Few weeds and other ruderals recorded in vineyard penetrated into the forestinterior. Mean seed density decreased one order of magnitude from the vineyard to the forest interior (from 20,831 to 2,159seed/m??). The seed banks of the abandoned vineyard and edge and forest interior were dominated by ruderals, but decreasingproportion of weeds was detected from the vineyard to the forest interior. Characteristic forest herbs possessed at most sparseseed banks. Our results suggest that high canopy cover mitigates the negative impact of surrounding weedy vegetation on theforest herb layer. Therefore, the effect of surroundings is detectable mostly in the seed banks. We can assume that the formationof an increased ruderal herb cover can be foreseen if canopy opens, because the local propagule sources of forest species aremissing from vegetation and soil seed banks.

Megjegyzések:We studied the potential role of seed bank in the dynamics of the understory in a turkey-sessile oak forest(Querceteum petraeae-cerris) in Hungary. We used long term records of the herb layer (1973-2006) andthe seed bank composition of 2006 to asses the role of seed bank in the regeneration of herb layer. Thetotal cover of herb layer decreased from 22% (1973) to 6% (1988), and remained low (<10%) till 2006;coinciding with the increasing cover of secondary canopy dominated by Acer campestre. We found a lowdensity seed bank (ca. 1300 seed/m2). Altogether 33 species were germinated from the soil samples.A few generalist weed species composed the majority of seed bank. It was possible to assign a seed banktype for 19 species; 14 species out of 19 was long-term persistent. We found that the characteristic perennialforest herbs and grasses had only sparse seed bank. The Jaccard similarity between vegetation andseed bank was low (<30%). Our results suggest that the continuous establishment of forest herbs are notbased on local persistent seed bank; it should be based on vegetative spreading and/or seed rain.

Dátum:2009
ISSN:1216-4585
Megjegyzések:Lúdlegelést követően homoki gyepek spontán regenerálódását tanulmányoztuk két felső és két alsó buckaoldali helyzetű területen. Területenként 5 db, 4m2-es állandó kvadrátban, évente három időpontban rögzítettük a fajonkénti borítást (1991?2002). A vizsgálat utolsó évében (2002) fúrással nyert talajminták koncentrálást követő csíráztatásával vizsgáltuk a regenerálódó gyepek magkészletét. Spontaneous regeneration of four degraded sandy grassland sites was studied. Our aim was to evaluate spontaneous regeneration capacity of acidic sandy grasslands after overgrazing by domestic geese. Three hypotheses were tested using long-term vegetation records and seed bank data. (i) Short-lived, early successional species comprise the majority of the seed banks and late successional perennials have sparse seed banks. (ii) Composition of seed banks is more similar to pioneer vegetation than to later successional stages. (iii) The similarity is higher between vegetation and seed banks in the upper positioned plots than in the closed, lower positioned ones. Two sites located in the upper part of dune slopes, and another two positioned on the lower part were studied. In each site the percentage cover of vascular species was recorded in five 4 m2 sized permanent plots, three times a year between 1991 and 2002. In the last year of the study (2002) soil seed banks were sampled. Two vertical segments (0?5, 5?10 cm) were separately analyzed. The seedling emergence method was applied on concentrated samples. Annuals and short-lived perennial dicots comprised the majority of the seed bank. The dominant perennial graminoids also built up dense seed banks. Seed density varied between 10300 and 40900 seeds/m2. Significantly higher seed densities were found in upper sites than in lower ones. We found a low to medium similarity (Jaccard similarity <0.45) between vegetation and the seed bank; similarity was the highest with the vegetation of the 1994?1998 period, except for the year of the seed bank sampling. The vertical position of sites had a significant effect on the regeneration after overgrazing. The large cover of grasses in lower sites decreased species richness and it also decreased seed densities by preventing seed set of annuals and short-lived perennials. Here, further management practices (e.g. grazing) are needed to increase species richness.

Megjegyzések:Neutral theory of species assembly means that species assembly is governed by stochastic dispersal processes and fluctuations in established populations. An alternative theory suggests that assembly is strongly determined by functional trait filtering governed by abiotic and biotic filtering selecting species from the local species pool. To test these assumptions, in the current paper we analysed vegetation changes in the first 12 years of succession after heavy goose grazing in acidic sand. With trait-based analyses using permanent plots we addressed the following particular hypotheses: (i) High fluctuations in the trait values are typical in the first years; later a temporally divergent change in the trait patterns of sites with different vertical position became characteristic. (ii) In the functional diversity of regenerative and vegetative traits we expected different temporal patterns. We confirmed the first hypothesis, as in the first few years most traits displayed high fluctuations with no clear patterns. Our findings weakly supported the second hypothesis; while there were distinct patterns detected in the functional richness of traits, functional divergence and evenness displayed no clear distinctive patterns. We can conclude, that both trait neutrality and filtering effects operate in the vegetation changes of the first period of secondary succession.

Dátum:2009
Megjegyzések:Four hypotheses were tested using long-term observations of vegetation development (12 years) and present-day seed bank data in a sandy grassland area overgrazed by domestic geese: i) Gap regeneration is crucial in maintaining species richness; thus, closed vegetation of the lower sites prevents continuous establishment of short-lived species. ii) Short-lived, early successional species comprise most of the seed banks and late successional perennials have at most sparse seed banks. iii) Composition of seed banks is more similar to pioneer vegetation than to later successional stages. iv) The similarity is higher between vegetation and seed banks in the upper-positioned plots than in the closed, lower-positioned ones. Two sites, located in the upper part of dune slopes, and another two, positioned on the lower part, were studied. In each site five 2x2 m permanent plots were surveyed between 1991 and 2002. Percentage cover was estimated three times a year. In the last study year, soil seed banks were sampled. Two vertical segments (0-5, 5-10 cm) were separately analyzed. The seedling emergence method was applied on concentrated samples. We found that the vegetation developed from open, annual dominated weedy assemblages to grasslands dominated by perennial graminoids. In the lowerpositioned sites perennial clonal grasses (Cynodon dactylon, Poa angustifolia and P. pratensis) formed more closed vegetation, which was accompanied by lower species richness compared to the upper-positioned sites. Seed density varied between 10,300 and 40,900 seeds/m2. Significantly higher seed densities were found in upper sites than in the lower ones. Annuals and short-lived perennial dicots comprised most of the seed bank. The dominant perennial graminoids also built up dense seed banks.

Megjegyzések:We assessed vegetation changes on acidic sandy soils in permanent plots to follow secondary succession after cessation of intensive goose breeding in E Hungary. We also aimed to estimate the time required for vegetation regeneration and indicate differences in secondary succession patterns at different altitudes in sand dunes. Two sites in the low and two in the high parts of the dunes were chosen and sampled for twelve years. The initial stages are characterized by ruderal communities dominated by nitrophilous annual weeds. Ruderal vegetation was soon replaced by nutrient-poor communities dominated by short-lived pioneer dicotyledonous plants and grasses. In the last few years of the study, coinciding with a rainy period, the low sites were dominated by the perennial grasses, Poa angustifolia, P. pratensis and Cynodon dactylon. In contrast, in the high sites a less dense cover of perennials developed. The influence of initial composition on vegetation development decreased with time and the influence of altitude increased during succession. The altitude of the site had a significant effect on regeneration. Species richness and Shannon diversity of the high sites increased during vegetation development and that of the lowsites decreased. Most annuals persisted in the high sites but became extinct in the low sites. The mean species turnover rate, irrespective of altitude, decreased during the study.
