Megjegyzések:Pharmaceutical industry is an export-oriented sector of significant traditions, producing large value added and creating huge external trade surplus. Our research, based on the analysis of external trade data after giving a short presentation of global mechanisms and Hungarian traditions of the industry, is fundamentally focused on the examination of three hypotheses. (1) Hungary is one of the leading exporters of pharmaceutical products within the region, showing significant growth. (2) The main markets of the Hungarian pharma-ceutical industry are found in Eastern and Central Europe. (3) The Hungarian products have significant share on their most important markets. The research has dynamic and comparative characteristics: it is focused on the decade after the turn of the Millennium, comparing the performance of Hungary to the important players within the region. Phar-maceutical industry we are regarding as one of the possible sectors of a Hungarian upgrad-ing strategy.

Megjegyzések:The higher value added activities are gaining more an more importance in the Hungarian economy. The pharmaceutical industry making products from few raw materials with addition of significant knowledge, is one of the potential sectors of this ?high road" development. Debrecen, the geographical focus of our study, is one of the most traditional centres of the pharmaceutical industry within Hungary, where the industrial production, the research and development as well as the educational background of the industry are present together. Debrecen has a sector-relevant offer of higher education which is (slightly) exceeded only by the choice of Budapest. Debrecen takes the second place (after Budapest) in Hungary also according to the volume of the sector-relevant higher education. Two outsourced departments of the university at the plant of TEVA Pharmaceuticals as well as other forms of participation of phannaceutical companies in the university education helps to draw the talented and interested students into the pharmaceutical industry and contributes to the harmonization of university education and sectoral needs. The students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology, who participates in sector-relevant qualification, are coming mostly from the Northeastern part of Hungary. The BSC education due to its influences has a bigger geographical extension, while the catchment area of MSC education is less focused on Hajdú-Bihar county.

Megjegyzések:The examination focuses on the issue of path-dependence, which is considered to be the core concept of evolutionary economic geography emphasizing the importance of historical development. Although the notion of path-dependence is used both in negative and positive contexts, we place the latter in focus leaving room for changes, as we are interested in the question how the local economic base can be reinforced by the development of perspective activities. Our key question involves aspects of regional development, namely how medium-sized settlements can be positioned as hubs in the economic space dominated by large cities in the age of globalization. With regard to the opportunities for establishing localization-type agglomeration advantages, which are important for the generation of positive feedback mechanisms in the broadest sense, the healthcare industry appears to be a perspective research field in the case of our examined city, Debrecen. Not only significant traditions and remarkable weight does the sector represent in the economy of the city, but the development ideas. In our presentation we attempt to delineate the corporate and institutional actors of the local healthcare industry. On the other hand, the companies are examined in three temporal sections after the change of regime, in order to unfold the dynamic segments of the healthcare industry. Business registers and corporate databases of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office are analysed in addition to the evaluation of corporate reports, press releases and documents of economic development reinforcement of healthcare industry constitutes a columnar component of the local.

Megjegyzések:Labour-intensive industries suffered a spectacular loss of their weight in the industrial structure of post-socialist Hungary having an intermediary position between the Western economies controlling the global industrial value chains and the Eastern low-cost production locations. This degradation process can be particularly witnessed in the case of the footwear industry which experienced two large waves of decline, one during the change of regime in 1989 and the other after the turn of the millennium. In the background of the changing performance of the footwear sector there were also significant structural changes during both periods of decline. Integration into global production networks by subcontracting or as subsidiaries of foreign enterprises, process and functional upgrading tendencies within the existing value chains as well as the establishment of Hungary's own brand products for niche markets are the most important issues in this respect. This study is built upon two key questions: (1) What kind of dynamics does the Hungarian footwear industry show during its integration into the (global) production networks of the sector? (2) How are global production networks becoming embedded into the local economy; and to what extent can the transformation of the Hungarian footwear industry be considered as a path- and place-dependent process? The empirical research is based on semi-structured and in-depth interviews carried out in the last three years with representatives of enterprises from eleven industrial locations ? comprising about 35 % of the total sectoral employment ? in addition to sector-relevant national and local institutions.

Megjegyzések:Labour-intensive industries have declined in the East Central European economy after the beginning of the millennium. Given this deterioration, significant employers are vanishing from rural areas, leaving behind serious employment problems in regions which are less capable of resilient restructuring. This article examines this shrinkage from a geographical aspect in the context of the Hungarian leather and footwear industry. This study focuses on the interpretation and explanation of the spatial differentiation that accompanies this shrinking process. The aim of this paper is to reveal the influencing factors that stand in the background of spatially uneven development. The analysis - embedded in the theoretical framework of global production networks - is based on the corporate database of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office and invokes the experience of interviews carried out with representatives of industrial actors as well. In addition to an understanding of spatial processes, the intention of the authors was to investigate the issues to be addressed in certain locations and under what conditions the long-standing industrial culture related to the sector can be preserved.

Megjegyzések:A hazai ipar térszerkezetének hosszabb távú fejlődése, illetve magasabb hozzáadott értéket előállító tevékenységek felé tolódása (mely a hosszabb idő alatt kialakuló, nehezen reprodukálható helyspecifikus, minőségi telepítő tényezők felértékelődését hozza magával) indokolttá teszi a folyamatok hátterében húzódó, a fejlődés szervességét, folyamatosságát képviselő tényezők kutatását. Vizsgálataink elméleti keretbe helyezése érdekében az útfüggőség változásokra nyitottabb, dinamikus koncepciója felé fordultunk, amely a múlt döntéseinek a jelen és a jövő gazdasági fejlődését befolyásoló szerepét állítja a középpontba. Ennek hangsúlyozása mellett sem kívánjuk alulértékelni azon külső hatásokat, melyek főként a külföldi működőtőke-befektetések formájában az ország ipari szerkezetváltását befolyásolják. Másrészt, az empirikus kutatásaink helyszínét képező alföldi térségek jellemzője a hagyományos iparági körzetek hiánya, melyből adódóan az útfüggőség bezáródás problémáját kiemelő, statikusabb megközelítése kevésbé tűnik alkalmas vonatkoztatási rendszernek. Empirikus vizsgálatainkat kisvárosi és középvárosi közegben végeztük. Tapasztalataink szerint a befektetők számára kevésbé vonzó kisváros iparának átalakulásában a helyi meghatározottságok szerepe nagyobb, a külföldi tőkebefektetések révén érvényesülő hatások korlátozottabbak, és közvetett módon - a helyi vállalkozások beszállítói hálózatokba kapcsolódásán keresztül - jelennek meg. A középvárosi esettanulmányban szereplő, külföldi zöldmezős beruházások helyszínét képező ipari park esetében a helyi meghatározottságok szerepe mérsékeltebb, de mégis kitapintható a múltból örökölt adottságok befolyásoló hatása, az útfüggőség megjelenése.

Megjegyzések:The highly internationalized, labour-intensive footwear industry showed two spectacular declines and significant restructuring in Hungary after the change of regime. In accordance with the approach the authors investigate, this phenomenon is associated with the integration ways and circumstances of the industry into global production networks. Sector-level assessment of the processes - including the changing geographical patterns of footwear industry which also indicate features of path-dependence - was performed in several previous works of the authors. On the basis of significant empirical fieldwork, recent study focuses on the current situation of an extraordinary foreign owned large company representing the challenges and development perspectives Hungarian footwear industry has to face with.

Megjegyzések:A közepes méretű városok kutatására - a téma fejlesztéspolitikai összefüggései miatt is - jelentős figyelmet fordít korunk Európája. Különösen érdekes a potenciális növekedési pólusoknak tekintett vidéki nagyvárosok gazdasági dinamikájának és szerkezetének vizsgálata Magyarország egyközpontú, főváros-vidék dichotómia által meghatározott térszerkezetében. Tanulmányunk a kérdéshez kapcsolódó magyarországi szakirodalom áttekintése után a települési gazdasági erő becsült nagyságát és a kettős könyvvitelt vezető társas vállalkozások helyi szinten összesített mutatóit elemzi. Továbbá a vizsgált városokban regisztrált nagy-, közép- és potenciális középvállalatok ágazati jellemzőit is tartalmazó adatai alapján az ezredforduló utáni másfél évtized fejlődésének főbb tendenciáit, illetve a hazai nagyvárosok egymáshoz viszonyított pozícióját vizsgálja. Fontos megállapítás, hogy a gazdasági sikerek hátterében elsősorban a külföldi nagyvállalatok által vezérelt, globális termelési hálózatokba történő integrálódás és az újraiparosodás folyamata figyelhető meg. Ehhez ugyanakkor számos potenciális veszélyforrás (egyoldalú függőség, helyi hozzáadott érték korlátozottsága) társul. Magyarország gazdaságának dualitása a vizsgált nagyvárosok teljesítményében is megmutatkozik, elsősorban a fővároshoz közelebb fekvő, lokalizációs előnyökből és kölcsönzött méretből egyaránt profitáló nagyvárosokat kedvező helyzetbe hozva.
