Faculties of Informatics are facing the problem in Hungary that students starting their tertiary education in Computer Sciences do not have a satisfactory level of algorithmic skills, their knowledge seems superficial, and the dropout rate is extremely high in these courses. We have launched a project to test how students' algorithmic skills have been developed in their primary and secondary education, how students evaluate their knowledge. The test proved that an extremely high percentage of the students arrive at the Faculty of Informatics with underdeveloped algorithmic skills, with unreliable knowledge, and they do not consider the recently emerged, non-traditional environments as programming tools and facilities for developing algorithmic skills.

Megjegyzések:Sprego is a deep approach programming tool in spreadsheet environments. Its main features are a set of general purpose functions, entitled Sprego functions, and the ability to create multilevel functions and formulas built on these functions. Equipped with these tools Sprego can serve as an introductory programming language for programmers and as the ultimate language for end-user programmers. We have launched a project to test the effectiveness of Sprego on different levels of the education system. The present paper details the developmental progress of students of informatics studying spreadsheet management with Sprego.

Megjegyzések:Students starting their tertiary studies in Informatics are found to have a low level of algorithmic skills and understanding of programming, which leads to the high number of drop out students and failed semesters during their studies. The students' low level of programming skills contrasts with their excellent results in the school leaving exams. To find out the reasons for this wehave launched the TAaAS project (Testing Algorithmic and Application Skills), which focuses on the students' algorithmic skillsand programming ability in traditional and non-traditional programming environments. Our analyses proved that school leavingexams are not able to measure these abilities of the students, and beyond that, are not able to distinguish between the different levels of the students. Students are accepted into the universities and start their studies based on the misleading results of the school leaving exams.

Megjegyzések:Testing the first year students of Informatics at the University of Debrecen revealed that students start their tertiary studies in programming with a low level of programming knowledge and algorithmic skills. The possible reasons which lead the students to this very unfortunate result were examined. The results of the test were compared to the students' results in the school leaving exams and to their self-assessment values. It was found that there is only a slight connection between the students' results in the test and in the school leaving exams, especially at intermediate level. Beyond this, the school leaving exams do not seem to enable students to evaluate their own abilities.

Megjegyzések:Word processing is one of the most popular digital activities. Despite its popularity, it is haunted by false assumptions, misconceptions, and ineffective and inefficient practices leading to erroneous digital text-based documents. The focus of the present paper is automated numbering and distinguishing between manual and automated numbering. In general, one bit of information on the GUI-the position of the cursor-is enough to tell whether a numbering is manual or automated. To decide how much information must be put on the channel-the teaching-learning process-in order to reach end-users, we designed and implemented a method that includes the analysis of teaching, learning, tutorial, and testing sources, the collection and analysis of Word documents shared on the internet or in closed groups, the testing of grade 7-10 students` knowledge in automated numbering, and calculating the entropy of automated numbering. The combination of the test results and the semantics of the automated numbering was used to measure the entropy of automated numbering. It was found that to transfer one bit of information on the GUI, at least three bits of information must be transferred during the teaching-learning process. Furthermore, it was revealed that the information connected to numbering is not the pure use of tools, but the semantics of this feature put into a real-world context.

Cím:Developing computational thinking skills with algorithm-driven spreadsheeting / Csernoch Mária, Biró Piroska, Máth János
Dátum:2021
ISSN:2169-3536
Megjegyzések:The paper presents the details of a four-year project to test the effectiveness of teaching spreadsheeting with spreadsheet programming, instead of the traditional, widely accepted surface approach methods. The novel method applied in the project, entitled Sprego (Spreadsheet Lego), is a concept-based problem-solving approach adapted from the didactics of other sciences and computer programming. In the experimental group contextualized, real-world programming problems are presented in a spreadsheet environment. A semi-unplugged data-driven analysis is carried out based on each problem, which is followed by the building of a feasible algorithm, expressed by natural language expressions. The coding is completed in the following step by applying a limited number of spreadsheet (Sprego) functions, multilevel, and array formulas. The final steps of the process are discussion and debugging. On the other hand, classical, tool-centered approaches are applied in the control groups. Our research reveals that the traditional surface approach methods for teaching spreadsheeting do not provide long lasting, reliable knowledge which would provide students and end-users with effective problem-solving strategies, while Sprego does. Beyond this finding, the project proves that Sprego supports schema construction and extended abstraction, which is one of the major hiatus points of traditional surface navigation methods. The project also reveals that developing computational thinking skills should not be downgraded, and the misconceptions of self-taught end-users and user-friendly applications should be reconsidered, especially their application in educational environments. Gaining effective computer problem-solving skills and knowledge-transfer abilities is not magic, but a time-consuming process which requires consciously developed and effective methods, and teachers who accept the incremental nature of the sciences.

Megjegyzések:Within the framework of the Testing Algorithmic and Application Skills project we tested first year students of Informatics at the beginning of their tertiary education. We were focusing on the students' level of understanding in different programming environments. In the present paper we provide the results from the University of Debrecen, the Universitatea BabesBolyai, and the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania in two tasks, which are based on the same algorithm but presented in different forms. We have found that students in Hungary tend to focus on the coding details while with the students in Romania there are only minor differences in the results of the two forms. This difference can be explained by the different acceptance methods of the universities in the two countries and/or by the methods applied in primary and secondary education to solve computer related problems. We can conclude that the approaches adopted by students of Informatics in Hungary may be an explanation for the high attrition rates in tertiary Computer Science education.

Megjegyzések:The Testing Algorithmic and Application Skills (TAaAS) project was launched in the 2011/2012 academic year to test first year students of Informatics, focusing on their algorithmic skills in traditional and non-traditional programming environments, and on the transference of their knowledge of Informatics from secondary to tertiary education. The results of the tests clearly show that students start their studies in Informatics with underdeveloped algorithmic skills, only a very few of them reaching the level of extended abstract. To find reasons for these figures we have analyzed the students' problem solving approaches. It was found that the students, almost exclusively, only consider traditional programming environments appropriate for developing computational thinking, algorithmic skills. Furthermore, they do not apply concept and algorithmic based methods in non-traditional computer related activities, and as such, mainly carry out ineffective surface approach methods, as practiced in primary and secondary education. This would explain the gap between the expectations of tertiary education, the students' results in the school leaving exams, and their overestimation of their knowledge, all of which lead to the extremely high attrition rates in Informatics.

Cím:Programozásorientált táblázatkezelői függvények / Csernoch Mária, Biró Piroska, Abari Kálmán, Máth János
Dátum:2014
Megjegyzések:A 2013/2014-es tanév kezdetén 4 magyar felsőoktatási intézmény 800 elsőéves informatikus hallgatóját teszteltük a tanítási éve első hetében.

Megjegyzések:A 2011/2012-es tanévtől kezdődően teszteltük a Debreceni Egyetem Informatikai Karára beérkező elsőéves informatika szakos hallgatók informatikai ismereteit, terminológia használatát, algoritmikus készségét. A teszt eredményeit összehasonlítottuk a hallgatók informatikai érettségin szerzett pontjaival, a hallgatók önértékelésével, valamint általános és középiskolai informatikatanárok hallgatói teljesítmény értékelésével. A 2013/2014-es tanévben a vizsgálatainkat kiterjesztettük további három felsőoktatási intézményre (ELTE, NYF, EKF).
