Megjegyzések:An important concern with regard to the ensembles of algorithms is that using the individually optimal parameter settings of the members does not necessarily maximize the performance of the ensemble itself. In this paper, we propose a novel evaluation method for simulated annealing that combines dataset sampling and image downscaling to accelerate the parameter optimization of medical image segmentation ensembles. The scaling levels and sample sizes required to maintain the convergence of the search are theoretically determined by adapting previous results for simulated annealing with imprecise energy measurements. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method, we optimize the parameters of an ensemble for lung segmentation in CT scans. Our experimental results show that the proposed method can maintain the solution quality of the base method with significantly lower runtime. In our problem, optimization with simulated annealing yielded an F1-score of 0.9397 and an associated MCC of 0.7757. Our proposed method maintained the solution quality with an F1-score of 0.9395 and MCC of 0.7755 while exhibiting a 42.01% reduction in runtime. It was also shown that the proposed method is more efficient than simulated annealing with only sampling-based evaluation when the dataset size is below a problem-specific threshold.

Cím:Accelerating the Optimization of a Segmentation Ensemble using Image Pyramids / Tóth János, Kapusi Tibor Péter, Harangi Balázs, Tomán Henrietta, Hajdu András
Dátum:2019
Megjegyzések:In this paper, we propose an image pyramid-based noisy energy function evaluation method for the local search technique simulated annealing. The method is primarily designed for the optimization of image segmentation algorithms, and it maintains solution quality with significantly reduced time requirement. The strategy to select the proper image pyramid levels during the search is theoretically determined via adapting results regarding evaluation in simulated annealing based on imprecise measurements. As a demonstrative application, we perform parameter-optimization of a segmentation ensemble dedicated to the extraction of bone structures from CT images.

Cím:Improving the Performance of an Ensemble-Based Exudate Detection System using Stochastic Parameter Optimization / János Tóth, Henrietta Tomán, András Hajdu
Dátum:2015
Megjegyzések:In this paper, we propose an efficient way to determine the optimal parameter setting of an ensemble based system dedicated to the detection of exudates in retinal images. We show that the optimal parameter settings of an individual detector may be different, when it becomes a member of an ensemble. We consider a stochastic search algorithm to solve this optimization problem. However, since the computational demand is extremely high, we introduce a specific speed-up by sampling the test dataset in every search step. We show that this approach is equivalent to the noisy evaluation of the energy function and fits the corresponding theoretical results to our case. Experimental results showing improvement with respect to the member exudate detectors and individually optimal parameter settings are presented for publicly available datasets.

Megjegyzések:In this study, we attempted to develop a method for accelerating parameter optimization of an object detector ensemble over large image datasets by using simulated annealing. We propose a novel sampling-based evaluation method that considers the minimum portion of the dataset required in each iteration to maintain solution quality. This approach can be considered a noisy evaluation of the energy. The sample sizes required during the search process are theoretically determined by adapting the convergence results for noisy evaluation. To determine applicability, we prepared and optimized two ensembles for diabetic retinopathy pre-screening based on microaneurysm detection with convolutional neural network-based and traditional object detectors. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed sampling-based evaluation method substantially reduced the computational time required for optimizing the parameters of the ensembles while preserving solution quality.
