Cím:Gender differences in the effect of subjective feedback in an online game / Anna Lovász, Ewa Cukrowska-Torzewska, Mariann Rigó, Ágnes Szabó-Morvai
Dátum:2022
ISSN:2214-8043
Megjegyzések:We test for gender differences in the impact of subjective feedback, using an online game with randomized treatment in the form of pop-up texts and graphics. We estimate the impact of giving encouragement or praise on performance (score, accuracy) and persistence (number of games played). We find some evidence of gender differences: while praise has little impact, encouragement has a positive impact on the persistence and performance of females and a negative impact on the performance of males. These are driven by those with low taskrelated confidence. The findings suggest that giving more individualized feedback - such as encouragement to females with low task-related confidence - can potentially improve gender equality, especially in traditionally male fields.

Cím:Competition, subjective feedback, and gender gaps in performance / Anna Lovász, Boldmaa Bat-Erdene, Ewa Cukrowska-Torzewska, Mariann Rigó, Ágnes Szabó-Morvai
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2214-8043
Megjegyzések:We use an online game with randomized treatments to study gender differences in the impacts of competition and subjective feedback. 5191 participants were randomly selected into 8 groups: players either saw a Top 10 leaderboard or not (competition), and within these, they received no subjective feedback, supportive feedback, rewarding feedback, or "trash talk" (feedback type). Seeing a leaderboard increases the persistence (number of games played) of all players, but only increases the performance (score) of male players. When the leaderboard is combined with supportive feedback, the performance of female players increases as well. This points to important heterogeneities by feedback type and individual characteristics and suggests that personalized feedback may be key for decreasing gender gaps, particularly in competitive settings such as STEM fields.

Cím:Where can childcare expansion increase maternal labor supply? A comparison of quasi-experimental estimates from seven countries / Ágnes Szabó-Morvai, Anna Lovász
Dátum:2023
ISSN:0377-7332 1435-8921
Megjegyzések:The estimated effect of childcare availability on maternal labor supply varies highly in previous single-country estimates. We provide comparable quasi-experimental estimates of the childcare effect for seven countries, using harmonized data and a uniform method based on country-specific childcare eligibility cutoffs. We evaluate the estimates in light of key institutional factors to determine under what conditions childcare expansion is likely to be effective. We propose a measure that captures childcare scarcity and predicts the effectiveness of childcare expansion: the gap between the participation rate of mothers with older children (aged 6-14) and childcare coverage under the age of 3. In countries with a high gap, we find that childcare availability has a significant positive impact on maternal labor supply (Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovak Republic). No significant impact is found in countries where the gap is low due to either already high childcare coverage (France) or the low participation of mothers with older children (Greece, Italy). We discuss other policies that need to be addressed concurrently for childcare expansion to achieve its goal of increasing mothers' participation in the labor market.

Cím:Universal preschool and cognitive skills - the role of school starting age as a moderating factor / Ágnes Szabó-Morvai, Daniel Horn, Anna Lovász, Kristof De Witte
Dátum:2023
ISSN:0885-2006
Megjegyzések:Previous empirical evidence is mixed regarding the impact of universal preschool on cognitive skills. We show that preschool enrollment can impact test scores positively if it does not lead to earlier school enrollment. We examine rich student data and use different enrollment cutoff dates in Hungary to separate the beneficial direct effect of earlier preschool enrollment from a negative indirect effect that may occur through earlier school enrollment. We find significant direct impacts: 6th-grade reading (math) test scores increase by 9.0 (6.3) percent of a standard deviation for children who enroll in preschool a year earlier. This impact persists through 10th grade and is larger among disadvantaged children. The findings support the importance of universal preschool for improving cognitive skills and equity. They highlight a key consideration for policy evaluation and design and help reconcile ambiguities in the previous empirical evidence.
