Megjegyzések:In our paper we introduce the IT technical language learning material focusing on the specialized use of the English language in the context of information technology (IT) and computing. This material has been developed in the framework of the 3D virtual library project started in 2013 as part of the Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom) research. The current version of the virtual library has a hypertext or 2D implementation which is freely available in the internet. The advanced 3D presentation of the material uses the 3D features of the MaxWhere Seminar System, arranging and displaying the content of the language learning material in the Fly Podium 3D space. First, we provide a short overview on the virtual library project as an introduction to the IT technical language learning material. In the next section we describe the background and aim of the development of the material, then we present in detail the organization and structure of the 2D and 3D implementation of the learning material. Some inventions and ideas may deserve attention such as the topic map of selected terms, concepts, and texts functioning as a navigational tool, the interactive tests (where the first one is for practice, and the second one is actually a memory game), and the mapping mechanism of the hypertext-based material into the 3D virtual space of the MaxWhere system.

Megjegyzések:In our paper we introduce a bilingual language learning material based on the three dimensional virtual library model (3DVLM). This is an inherent part of the virtual library project started in 2013 in the framework of the Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom) research. The current version of the 3DVLM uses the 3D features and the hypertext-based presentation capabilities of the MaxWhere Seminar System. The latter is especially important because our material is based on web technology and organized so that it is going to be a scale-free network of interconnected nodes. First, we would like to provide a short overview on the virtual library in general, then introduce the organization and structure of the bilingual language learning material we have developed to support English language learning for Hungarian learners at an advanced level. The learning material is based on selected passages from classical literary works, presented both in English and in Hungarian, which we think may improve both English language skills and cultural awareness of language learners through the background knowledge they acquire. In order to check and test the bilingual language learning material we used the Google Translate service which proved to be a very efficient tool for both improving the learning material and deepening the language learning process.

Megjegyzések:In our paper we introduce a bilingual language learning material developed in the framework of the so-called three dimensional virtual library model (3DVLM). This model inspired by the history and organization of the famous ancient Library of Alexandria forms the basis of the virtual library project which started about eight years ago as part of the Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom) research. The current version of the 3DVLM uses the excellent 3D features of the MaxWhere Seminar System which makes it suitable for both individual learning and classroom use. In the following, we would like to introduce first the basic framework of our development, then describe in detail the data structure and organization of the developed bilingual language learning material. The basic idea of the material is to present selected phrases and contexts from classical literary works in English and from their parallel translations in Hungarian in order to improve both the language skills and background knowledge of Hungarian language learners at an advanced level. We found that using web technology was especially useful for developing the language learning material and the developed hypertext structure formed a scale-free network of interconnected nodes.

Megjegyzések:In our paper we would like to discuss in detail the present status of our three-dimensional virtual library model (3DVLM) built on the hierarchical scheme of the ancient Library of Alexandria worked out in the socalled Pinakes by Callimachus in the 3rd century BC. The full content of the model, once completed, would provide a comprehensive overview of the classical heritage our culture is originated from. In this tradition Callimachus is considered to be one of the most talented Hellenistic scholar-poets. His brief epigrams were outstanding which reflected his allusive mind and erudition. In general, it is a great challenge for us to deliver the message of ancient times to the present-day culture, but it seems to be very difficult to convey this highly sophisticated content to the members of the young (and especially the y and z) generations of our times who have been brought up and educated in a completely different social and cultural environment. Our basic idea is that language learning can serve as a common basis to transform and offer the ancient knowledge for the young generations of the internet era. Moreover, we are aware that nowadays one of the preferred sources of information is Wikipedia. So we chose and carefully preprocessed some Wikipedia texts (in English) about Callimachus' life and works for the 3DVLM to assist our users in language learning and, at the same time, provide them short but valuable texts which are worth learning and memorizing.

Megjegyzések:Our basic aim of the research is the implementation and gradual improvement of a three-dimensional virtual library model. In the development stage of the first version of the model we chose some illustrious and well-known authors who represented the ancient Greek poetry and drama from the 3rd century BC. Their short biography and certain parts of their works formed the selected content of the virtual library model. We designed a four-level hierarchical and scale-free structure based on the original classification scheme of the ancient Library of Alexandria elaborated by the famous librarian Callimachus. As for the library content, our general objective is to select and process as many ancient literary works of great cultural value as possible by the continuous enlargement of the database of the virtual library content. In the first version of the model both the biographies and the selected literary works were in English, but we have already started to upload Hungarian translations of some items in the database. Moreover, we are enhancing the content of the database with additional items of different verbal and/or multimedia text types (e.g. illustrative images, commentaries, annotations, concordance and collocation tables, dictionary and encyclopedia entries, translations, adaptations, summaries and so on). This additional background information is necessary for us to interpret and understand the old Greek poetical texts better, especially in the case of mythological allusions. Currently we investigate how the collected items can be effectively used in language learning to develop the learners' linguistic competence, and, in general, how the spatial hypertext concept could promote the multidisciplinary use of the model in education. In this three-dimensional environment we see a superb and promising example of efficient knowledge organization. Our basic idea is to provide preprocessed, ?memorize at once" content for those users who are interested both in ancient period and literature and language learning, thus supporting their learning activity and lexical knowledge at the same time. The virtual library model is currently based on PHP/MySQL technology which fully supports the three-dimensional representation capabilities of the VirCA (Virtual Collaboration Arena) system. The web-based implementation of the model represents the library content in a similar spatial arrangement as the same elements may appear in the three-dimensional space. It is also possible to present the content of the virtual room by a two-dimensional projection described by an XML file with a corresponding style sheet based on XSL/jQuery technology. In addition, there is a brand new and efficient tool of cyber learning with excellent 3D presentation capabilities called the MaxWhere Seminar system developed by the professionals of the VirCA system. The MaxWhere system uses 3D virtual space as a general context and allows us to present online interactive content as well as vivid and intricate details of the presented material. We firmly think that this new 3D presentation tool can also be effectively used for supporting our main goals in the future.

Megjegyzések:In our paper we describe in detail a three-dimensional virtual library model inspired by the system and presumable content of the ancient Library of Alexandria. In addition, we introduce one the possible implementation of our virtual library model based on the VirCA system and web technology (such as HTML, CSS, PHP etc.). In our model, we used the classification system elaborated by the famous librarian, poet and scholar Callimachus. Focusing primarily on the field of Greek poetry and drama in the 3rd century BC, in the current implementation of our model we selected those ancient and well-known authors whose texts, completed with short biographical data, may be a good starting point for the content of the virtual library. Currently we prefer various English translations of the selected ancient Greek texts with an intention to gradually improve the content of the library with other texts and multimedia materials (other translations, paintings, images of papyri, sculptures, commentaries, selected quotations, dictionary and encyclopedia entries, related texts from the ancient and modern culture etc.) which form background knowledge for the interpretation of the processed texts. We describe a scale-free network model, the so-called Alexandrian model of network, which the organization and future development of the virtual library is based on. Finally, we discuss the main purpose of our virtual library model and its possible relationships with the current cognitive infocommunications research.
