Cím:Building Coalitions for a Diversified and Sustainable Tourism : two Case Studies from Hungary / Lakner Zoltán, Kiss Anna, Merlet Ivan, Oláh Judit, Máté Domicián, Grabara Janusz, Popp József
Dátum:2018
ISSN:2071-1050
Megjegyzések:The development of the tourism sector has been a question of strategic importance for Hungary, a small, open economy with limited natural resources. At the same time, these efforts often generate considerable environmental conflicts, decreasing the sustainability of the environment. To understand the potential methods of sustainable tourism development, and to develop the optimal policy, it is essential to clarify the actors, their systems of interest and the potential ways of forging coalitions between them. The article presents an analysis of two case studies of rural tourism development: the "softening" of tourism at the most important touristic attraction in Hungary, Lake Balaton; and the conflicts arising from wine tourism development. Based on institutional economics, principle?agent theory and strategic management, and applying the MACTOR method, the authors identify the key actors, present the network of their mutual influences and goals, determine the most important conflicts and highlight the potential coalitions between them from the point of view of sustainable rural tourism development, as well as ways to further develop the regulatory environment. Based on this analysis, the article proves: (1) the importance of the modernization and re-organization of the public administration structure, focusing on optimal utilization of resources, as opposed to attaching to traditions; (2) the importance of forming clusters of different partners; (3) the strengthening of the knowledge base of decisions concerning sustainable tourism management; and (4) increasing conscious planning, based on the inclusion of different interest groups and long-term prognoses in local decision making, minimises the environmental burden of tourism.

Dátum:2019
ISSN:2071-1050
Megjegyzések:The pharmaceutical sector is a ?agship of the economy in most developed countries and is one of the most research-intensive sectors of modern economies. The aim of this paper was to determine the mutual relationships between the research and development (R&D) resources, various indicators of scienti?c performance and the competitiveness of the sector. We carried out a cointegration analysis of a time series of R+D resources, the number of academic papers published, aswellaspatentsandthecompetitivenessofthissectorinvariousdevelopedstates. Theeconometric analysis of time series is built on panel cointegration models. Based on the combination of di?erent comprehensive and coherent international databases and applying the latest methods of modern time series analysis, the paper proves that, in most developed countries, a direct, signi?cant, causal, lagged relationship between the monetary resources allocated to R&D and the number of academic papers, as well as the number of patents can be observed. In most cases, a causal relationship can be demonstrated between the number of academic papers and patents, but vice versa, this fact is not provable. This study highlights the complexity of innovation systems in the pharmaceutical sector. The results prove only a weak connection between the number of patents and the number of publications. Whenevaluatingthee?ciencyoftheutilisationofresourcesallocatedtopharmaceutical R+D, the effect of the time lag should be considered.

Cím:PRISMA Statement for Reporting Literature Searches in Systematic Reviews of the Bioethanol Sector / Oláh Judit, Krisán Eszter, Kiss Anna, Lakner Zoltán, Popp, József
Dátum:2020
ISSN:1996-1073
Megjegyzések:The bioethanol sector is an extremely complex set of actors, technologies and market structures, influenced simultaneously by different natural, economic, social and political processes. That is why it lends itself to the application of system dynamics modelling. In last five years a relatively high level of experience and knowledge has accumulated related to the application of computer-aided system modelling for the analysis and forecasting of the bioethanol sector. The goal of the current paper is to offer a systematic review of the application of system dynamics models in order to better understand the structure, conduct and performance of the bioethanol sector. Our method has been the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA), based on English-language materials published between 2015 and 2020. The results highlight that system dynamic models have become more and more complex, but as a consequence of the improvement in information technology and statistical systems, as well as the increasing experience gained they offer an efficient tool for decision makers in the business and political spheres. In the future, the combination of traditional system dynamics modelling and agent-based models will offer new perspectives for the preparation of more sophisticated description and forecasting.

Cím:Food security perspectives in Sub-Saharan Africa / József Popp, Judit Oláh, Anna Kiss, Zoltán Lakner
Dátum:2019
ISSN:1582-9146 2247-9104
Megjegyzések:The state of global food security has been considerably improved in the last decades; however, these achievements are attributable to the "green revolutions" in Latin-America and Asia. The food shortage has remained persistent in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the proliferation of undernourishment is nearly 30%. There are a large number of studies investigating different causes and aspects of the current crisis, or evaluating the future of the African agro-food sector based of one or a few particular aspects (e.g. climate change, population dynamics). Just a small number of attempts have been made to offer a holistic approach focusing on future development possibilities. The goals of the article are (1) to set up a conceptual system-dynamic model for agro-food development in Africa, (2) test this model on examples of two representative countries, namely Uganda and Nigeria, (3) based on expert surveys, define development scenarios for the agro-food sector in these two countries and (4) determine the key actions for the improvement of the present situation. The system dynamics simulations forecast a rather gloomy future for the agro-food sector: even the historically highest development rate of agricultural production of these two countries will not be enough to meet the rapidly increasing demand for food. Scenarios based on expert estimations predict long-range stagnation in Nigeria and just a moderate probability of improvement in Uganda. Radical improvement in the food security situation and prevention of imminent social catastrophe necessitate wide-ranging socio-economic reforms focusing on (1) decreasing fertility, (2) a general upgrading of health culture, (3) promotion of cooperatives and (4) enhanced attractiveness of the agro-food sector for a wide range of business investment opportunities.

Cím:The socio-economic force field of the creation of short food supply chains in Europe. / József Popp, Judit Oláh, Anna Kiss, Ágoston Temesi, Csaba Fogarassy, Zoltán Lakner
Dátum:2019
ISSN:1336-8672 1338-4260
Megjegyzések:It is a clear contradiction that while, on a verbal level, there is a mushrooming of declarations on the importance of a specific form of circular economy and short supply chains in sustainable rural development, these systems hardly exist in the new member states of the European Union (EU). The current article offers a possible explanation for this paradox and suggests some policy measures to enhance the role of these systems. Applying the approach of institutional economics and force field theory, and based on expert estimations from ten EU member states using the MACTOR method, the authors determined the influence-dependence relations between relevant actors and the actor-goal connections in the socio-economic systems relevant to short supply chains in EU member states. It was proven that in the new member states of the EU the considerable cost-efficiency advantages of global supply chains paired with the high level of influence of multinational trading companies are, in most cases, more important factors than sustainable development. The relatively low propensity to pay for local products on the part of the population of new EU member states further decreases possibilities for short supply chain development. The concluding remarks also include suggestions for policy makers.

Cím:Is the Sustainable Choice a Healthy Choice? : Water Footprint Consequence of Changing Dietary Patterns / Orsolya Tompa, Zoltán Lakner, Judit Oláh, József Popp, Anna Kiss
Dátum:2020
ISSN:2072-6643
Megjegyzések:It is evident that the modification of dietary patterns is a necessary precondition of disease prevention and health improvement. Changing nutritional habits also has deep-rooted consequences on the environmental burden. The majority of similar previous studies have analyzed the change in greenhouse gas emissions against theoretical modifications in current food consumption. The analysis on the e ect of diet on the water footprint is also gaining in importance, since water supply is a critical global issue. Based on current nutritional patterns of a Central European country?Hungary?as well as dietary recommendations and scientific literature, we generated six dietary scenarios and determined the consequences of these on green (originally from precipitation) and blue (sourced from surface or groundwater) water consumption and dietary quality. Compared to the baseline scenario (current local nutritional pattern) of both genders, based on the integrated aspect of water footprint and dietary quality, the most disadvantageous scenario was the ketogenic (ca. ??2% in dietary quality, +18% in blue water footprint, and +16% in green water footprint) and the most advantageous was the sustainable scenario (ca. +9% in dietary quality, ??42% in green water footprint, and ??29% in blue water footprint). As a summary it can be stated, that (1) there is no clear linear relationship between the "healthiness" and water footprint of di erent diets, but (2) a more balanced diet, which integrates nutritional and environmental considerations could decrease the environmental burden in an e cient way.
