Megjegyzések:We tested first year BSc students of Informatics at the beginning of their tertiary studies, after finishing their studies in high schools and passing the school leaving exams of Informatics. Three pseudo-codes, a flow-chart with visual objects, and a logical problem were presented. The pseudo-codes and the logical problem were borrowed from the Hungarian programming contest prepared for students of 5-8 grades. The flow-chart was created by our team based on one of the pseudo-codes. We were interested in how the participants were able to read and summarize what the presented algorithms do. All except the logical problems were answered with natural language sentences, while each logical problem was answered with a whole number based on the output of the presented algorithm in the range of [0, 3]. Considering the nature of the answers, the logical problem was different from the others. Beyond the students' results, we were also interested in how the final scores are influenced by the time students spend on computers and mobile devices functioning as computers. In general, we found that the time students spend on computers affects their results. The heavy and the moderate users scored similarly in the test, while the occasional users scored significantly lower. In the case of mobile devices, the heavy users scored the lowest, while the moderate and occasional users performed better, with similar results. These findings prove that mobile devices do not have positive effects on decoding; furthermore, heavy mobile usage has a negative effect on these activities. Considering computers, the pattern is somewhat different. We have found that in general, there is no difference between the results of the heavy and the moderate computer users. On the contrary, the results of the occasional users were significantly lower than the results of the other two groups.

Megjegyzések:Statistical data show that the number of foreign students studying at the Faculty of Informatics of the University of Debrecen is increasing year by year due to the popularity of the major and the various international scholarship programs. The growing number of students, the varying levels of students' knowledge, their language skills and their cultures, all pose many challenges for teachers. It is also a great challenge for students to adapt to a new educational environment, to comply with a new set of rules, and to learn a new way of life. I meet foreign students in the Introduction to Programming course during the first semester of the university year. The aim of the course is to improve their programming skills and the most important task of this period is to help students to integrate and to present the most important requirements and information. In this paper, I would like to present the current state of student mobility at the University of Debrecen, taking into account national headcount data, as well as the results and experiences of my first year foreign students studying programming.

Megjegyzések:Sprego is a programming approach in spreadsheet environments, which is firmly supported by unplugged and semi-unplugged tools for better comprehension. In the present paper we provide details of how authentic webpage-tables support real world problem solving and serve as semi-unplugged tools. The "Computer Science Unplugged" method is generally accepted in communicating the great ideas of computer science. However, we have found that the variation and the right proportion of unplugged and semi-unplugged tools can serve these great ideas also satisfy students' eagerness for digital contents and tools. In this context we must clarify the misconception that both programming and end-user activities start when the computer is switched on. Beyond this, we provide details of our experience on how data management and end-user programming in spreadsheet environments can be introduced and supported with semi-unplugged tools. Along with previously suggested ideas, we have found that teaching algorithms and programming in spreadsheet environments are both equally possible, but less demanding than 'classical' programming. To carry out coding in spreadsheets, we developed the Sprego - Spreadsheet Lego - high mathability programming approach and language. The semi-unplugged tools, which we rely on heavily in Sprego, are authentic data arranged in tables - primarily downloaded from the Internet and/or collected by students. The authentic tables allow both teachers and students to make a deep analysis of the content and structure of the data, to recognize data types, convert files, formulate tasks and problems based on the data, and finally to discuss and debug the problem solving processes and solutions. Most of these processes can be supported by providing the tables in printed form - either on paper or on digital devices -, prior to or alongside the coding process. One further feature of Sprego is the extensive use of composite functions. With this other semi-unplugged approach the discussion and debugging of solutions are strongly supported and it allows students to share the great ideas of computer sciences, and to develop computational thinking and algorithmic skills.

Dátum:2016
ISSN:1303-6521
Megjegyzések:The high attrition rate in informatics is alarming. We tested first year students and found that they start their tertiary studies with a low level of computational thinking. We provide details of the attitudes of students towards informatics and their expectations as regards computer education. We found that a very low number of students recognized that computer sciences require high level algorithmic skills and select informatics as their major to learn programming. Consequently, the students' attitudes and their expectations from previous studies and their previous environment explain, in part, the high attrition rate experienced in these subjects.

Megjegyzések:Sprego is a deep approach programming tool in spreadsheet environments. Its main features are a set of general purpose functions, entitled Sprego functions, and the ability to create multilevel functions and formulas built on these functions. Equipped with these tools Sprego can serve as an introductory programming language for programmers and as the ultimate language for end-user programmers. We have launched a project to test the effectiveness of Sprego on different levels of the education system. The present paper details the developmental progress of students of informatics studying spreadsheet management with Sprego.
