Megjegyzések:
Bigheaded carps and especially silver carp have been considered as an effective biological control for algal blooms, thus were introduced to several countries in the last decades, including Hungary. Our aim was to explore the feeding habits of bigheaded carps in Lake Balaton (Hungary), where the stock consists mainly of hybrids (silver carp x bighead carp). We examined the relationship between filtering apparatus (gill raker) morphology and size-distribution of planktonic organisms in the food. We failed to find any significant relationship between gill raker parameters and plankton composition in the filtered material. Bigheaded carps with various types of gill rakers consumed food within the same size-spectrum, independently of the rate of hybridization. However, the linkage between the proportion of different planktonic size classes in the water and in the diet of fish was detectable in case of both phytoplankton and zooplankton consumption, suggesting that the seasonally variable availability of different food items was an important factor in determining the food composition of bigheaded carps. We can deduce that bigheaded carps consume high amounts of zooplankton to meet their energy requirements, and the diet overlap among bigheaded carps and other planktivores may exert negative effects on native fish populations.

The role of filter-feeding Asian carps in algal dispersion / Judit Görgényi, Gergely Boros, Zoltán Vitál, Attila Mozsár, Gábor Várbíró, Gábor Vasas, Gábor Borics

Megjegyzések:
The gut contents of filter-feeding fish often contain considerable amounts of viable phytoplankton cells; thus, these animals can act as vectors in the horizontal and vertical transport of algae. In this study, the potential role of the introduced filter-feeding Asian carps (hybrids of silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and bighead carp H. nobilis) in algal dispersion was studied in the oligo-mesotrophic Lake Balaton (Hungary). We examined the algal composition in the lake water, gut contents (foregut and hindgut), and occasionally in the filtered suspensions collected directly from the gill rakers (filtering apparatus) of fish. Microscopic analyses revealed that the phytoplankton composition of the ingested food differed considerably from what we found in the lake water. Cryptophytes, dinoflagellates, and euglenophytes were observed in both the lake water and foregut samples but were absent in the hindgut samples. However, in the cultured hindgut samples, we found viable cells of several phytoplankton taxa (e.g., diatoms, blue-greens, desmids, volvocalean and chlorococcalean green algae), which managed to survive the physical and chemical digestion. These results imply that the presence of these filter-feeding fish can alter the phytoplankton species composition and promote the dominance of taxa that are able to resist digestion.

Between-lake variation in the elemental composition of roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) / Gergely Boros, Jussi Jyväsjärvi, Péter Takács, Attila Mozsár, István Tátrai, Martin Søndergaard, Roger I. Jones

Megjegyzések:
Stoichiometry theory states that the elementalcomposition of individual organisms is a taxondependenttrait, and that organisms maintain relativelyconstant body nutrient composition, independent offood nutrient content or ingestion rate. Some recentstudies have pointed out that assuming a strict homeostasisin fish is an over-simplification, so that nutrientratios in fish bodiesmay not be as constant as previouslythought. In this study, our aims were (a) to assess theoverall nutrient composition of roach, (b) to reveal anysignificant differences in elemental composition ofroach between populations from different lakes and(c) to relate these potential differences to environmentalparameters and fish condition. The mean elementalcomposition of roach (whole fish) was 45.0 ? 5.3 %carbon (C), 10.2 ? 0.8 % nitrogen (N), and 2.4 ? 0.5% phosphorus (P), while their molar C/N/P ratio wasapproximately 50:10:1. The elemental composition ofroach was not as constant as homeostatic stoichiometrymodels would predict. Significant differences werefound in the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contentsof fish sampled from different lakes. Productivity oflakes (expressed as chlorophyll-a) was positively correlatedwith %C, C/N, C/P, and N/P ratios, andnegatively correlated with %N and %P. In turn, meanlake temperature was negatively correlated with %Cand C/N ratio, but not with other nutrients or nutrientratios. Condition factor was negatively related to the%C of fish, but it did not correlate significantly with%N, %P, or nutrient ratios. Our results on intraspecificnutrient variation illustrate the potential differencesbetween populations and emphasize the importance oflake-specific approaches.

Comparison of different methods used for phosphorus determination in aquatic organisms / Gergely Boros, Attila Mozsár
Dátum:

ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
The reliable determination of the totalphosphorus (P) content stored in aquatic biota isessential for studies on nutrient stoichiometry, as wellas for effective lake management measures. However,a variety of methods are found in the literature forsample P content determination, which renders itnecessary to assess whether the data reported indifferent studies are comparable. We used differentcombinations of combustion durations, acid types andacid concentrations for sample digestion, and measuredP concentrations subsequently with the standardcolorimetric method. In addition, P contents ofsamples were assayed by ICP?OES and MP?AESmethods. Our results confirmed that the variabilityamong studies using different methods may explainsome of the reported intraspecific and interspecificvariation. We found that duration of combustionexerted the most important influence on the P retrieval, while acid type and acidity of the hydrolysing solutiondid not substantially influence the efficiency of sampledigestion. We recommend using 8 h of combustionand 0.3 N HCl for acid hydrolysis prior to thecolorimetric P analysis, and urge standardisation inthe P analyses of biotic samples so as to obtain reliableresults and data comparable among different studies.

Relationship between Fulton's condition factor and proximate body composition in three freshwater fish species / A. Mozsár, G. Boros, P. Sály , L. Antal, S. A. Nagy
Dátum:
2015
ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
Morphometric-based condition indices are widely used toassess proximate body composition and, collaterally, feedingand living conditions of fish. However, the exact relationshipbetween condition indices and proximate body compositionof fish and its relatedness to life history traits and seasonalityhas yet to be fully explored. Therefore, the aim of this studywas to examine how the Fulton's condition factor (K-factor)is related to the chemical composition (i.e. lipid, protein, water and carbon content, and molar carbon : nitrogenratio), length and gonadal development of fish, and howthese relationships are influenced by gender and seasonalityin three freshwater fish species: Amur sleeper (Perccottus glenii),pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) and rudd (Scardiniuserythrophthalmus). It was found that the strength and directionof association between the K-factor and proximate bodycomposition can vary markedly among fish species. The Kfactorcorrelated positively with gonadal development inpumpkinseed and Amur sleeper, while no such relationshipexisted in rudd. Condition factor can be a reliable measureof lipid content; however, the relationship was stronger inspecies with higher and more variable lipid contents. Moreover,a striking and consistently negative linkage was foundbetween the K-factor and water content of the fish body, which corresponds to the findings of several other studies. Inturn, any relationship between the K-factor and the proteincontent of fish was not detected. Gender seemed to exert anegligible effect on the relationship between the K-factor andproximate body composition, while seasonal variance wasobvious in most relationships.

1. Munkánk során vizsgáltuk a balatoni, hibrid dominanciájú busaállományra jellemző táplálkozási szokásokat, az egyedek növekedésének ütemét, kondíciófaktorát, illetve az esetleges szaporodásra utaló jeleket. 2. Megállapítottuk, hogy a balatoni egyedek táplálékbázisát főként zooplankton és detritusz képezi. A táplálkozásban szerepe lehet továbbá a tápcsatornában előforduló baktériumközösségeknek is.3. Jellemző a balatoni busákra, hogy nagy mennyiségben fogyasztanak szervetlen lebegő anyagot, melynek részaránya (száraz anyag tartalomban kifejezve) esetenként elérheti a 80%-ot is a béltartalomban. 4. A balatoni állomány növekedése kedvezőnek mondható más élőhelyek busaállományaival összehasonlítva, emellett kondíciófaktoruk is kiemelkedően magas. 5. A női ivarú egyedek petefészkében sikeres ívásra utaló nyomokat, ún. poszt-ovulációs sárgatesteket azonosítottunk.
