Megjegyzések:This study highlights the detection of area change in Sikkim glaciers between the year 2000 and 2017 using LANDSAT TM / ETM+ and IRS LISS III satellite images. Sikkim glaciers are the part of Tista Basin surrounded by snow clad mountains of Eastern Indian Himalayas. There are 96 glaciers mapped including both, 80 debris free and 16 debris covered glaciers. The area loss in these glaciers is calculated as 10.60 sq. km (2.14 %) from the year 2000 and 2017 which was 493.82 sq. km in 2000 and 483.21 sq. km in 2017. On further analysis, we observed debris free glaciers are more in numbers but smaller in size as compared to the debris covered glaciers which are very less in numbers but larger in size. The area loss in debris free glaciers is 6.89 sq. km while in debris covered glaciers it is 3.70 sq. km. All the glaciers of Tista basin are retreating with no advance in glaciers and the glacier retreat is caused mainly by global climate change.
