Cím:Comparison of the shelf life and surface mold population of Hungarian Prunus cerasus cultivars following different pre- and posthavest treatments / K. Mihály, Cs. Kovács, A. Nagy, F. Takács, E. Sándor

Megjegyzések:Hungary is among the three largest tart cherry (Prunus cerasus) producers in the European Union, and also the world's largest fresh tart cherry exporter. There is restricted information about the efficacy of options to decrease postharvest losses, primarily caused by postharvest diseases. The optimization of the pre- and postharvest treatments would extend the availability of the fruit period. The aim of our research was to compare the efficacy of different pre- and postharvest treatments to extend the shelf life of three Hungarian tart cherry cultivars (♭Érdi bőtermő', ♭Újfehértói fürtös' and ♭Petri') obtained from the same orchard. Fungicide (Luna Privilege) and biofungicide (Serenade ASO) were applied two weeks before harvest. Harvested fruits were stored for 6 weeks at 0?C either in normal or in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), using StePac Xtend (cherry). Surface mold population on fruit were studied by determining colony forming unit (CFU) and the colony morphology. Shelf-life was monitored, and disease incidence was calculated during one week before and following storage. Molds were isolated from rotten fruits during shelf-life studies and identified based on morphological and molecular characters. Differences in shelf life and the surface mold CFUs were observed between the different cultivars. The efficacy of the preharvest treatments was also influenced by the cultivars. Both preharvest treatments have successfully increased the proportion of healthy fruits with almost 10% after harvest. The biocontrol agent treatment was able to strengthen the epidermis of the fruits. Weight loss and the percentage of decay were significantly reduced by MAP combined with cold storage. Penicillium sp. Alternaria sp., Fusarium sp. and Rhizopus sp. were the most frequent fungi isolated from the surface of the fruits.

Cím:Effect of different storage methods for the self-life and the fungal populations of the Hungarian sour cherry cultivars / K. Mihály, E. Sándor, C. Kovács, F. Takács
Dátum:2020
ISSN:0567-7572
Megjegyzések:The modified atmosphere has been widely used for long-time storage of different fruits. The aim of our research was the investigation of the pre- and postharvest techniques in case of the different (Normal, MAP) storages for the control and the treatment of sour cherry. Different sour cherry cultivars were examined during the study: 'Érdi bőtermő', 'Petri', and 'Újfehértói fürtös'. Shelf-life was monitored using disease severity index (DI%) for detecting the activity of fruit decaying fungi. The incidence of the different fungi were also comparing at the end of the shelf-life tests. We concluded that the MAP storage has decreased the decay percentage. Different decay incidence and severity was detected for the different cultivars during shelf-life studies at room temperature. The storage also has decreased shelf-life of the fruits of the 'Érdi bőtermő' cultivar, following 6 weeks of 0-2?C cold storage. The rate of the detected fungal genera reduced following cold storage. The optimization of the storage and the shelf-life of the Prunus cerasus fruits providing longer time for availability of fresh fruit with high nutritional value with the help of cold MAP storage. The postharvest techniques of the sour cherry can be developed with the adaptation of the methods used for other stone fruits in Hungary.

Megjegyzések:Walnut (Juglans regia L.) production is a developing sector in Hungarian horticulture, where preharvest fruit rot increasingly causes economic losses. Previously, fungi from the Diaporthaceae and Botryosphaeriaceae families were isolated with a high incidence from rotten fruits. Here, we identify these pathogens from different plant parts (twigs, buds, and shoots) in orchards in the north-east of Hungary, and test their pathogenicity on immature nuts. Diaporthe eres Nitschke and Diplodia seriata De Notaris were identified in isolates from different symptomatic and asymptomatic plant parts based on their ITS (nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer) and tef1 (translation elongation factor EF-1-alpha gene) DNA sequences. Purified monocultures caused rot of immature nuts following in vitro inoculation. Our results suggest that D. eres Nitschke and D. seriata De Notaris lingering on buds and overwintering woody parts may affect the seasonal nuts through wound infection. Infection by Diaporthe and Botryosphaeriaceae species present on woody plant parts, as well as on/in buds has been reported in Mediterranean countries. This is the first report of such stepwise aetiology from a region with continental weather. Climate change, associated weather patterns and the limitations of fungicide use in the European Union, among other factors, could be responsible for the increasing number of infections and economic damage caused by these pathogens.
