Dátum:2018
ISSN:1589-7389
Megjegyzések:We carried out research using Zalman Usiskin's test (1982) and also a modified version of his test to see how the geometric approach of secondary school students (Grades 8-10) specialized in mathematics had changed. We observed two groups of students for several years. Our aim was to find a relation between the change of the mean of the van Hiele level of the students and the structure of the geometry syllabus. We also observed if there was a change in the geometric approach of the students during the summer holidays and if so, in what way it changed.

Cím:The formation of area concept with the help of manipulative activities / Eszter Herendiné-Kónya
Dátum:2015
ISSN:1589-7389
Megjegyzések:Examining the performance of Hungarian students of Grades 4-12 in connection with area measurement, we found many deficiencies and thinking failures. In the light of this background, it seems reasonable to review the educational practice and to identify those teaching movements that trigger the explored problems and to design a teaching experiment that tries to avoid and exclude them.Based on result we make recommendations for the broad teaching practice. In our study we report on one part of a multi-stage teaching experiment in which we dealt with the comparison of the areas of figures, the decomposition of figures and the special role of the rectangle in the process of area concept formation. The conclusion of the post-test is that manipulative activities are important and necessary in Grades 5 and 6, more types of equidecomposition activities are needed and the number of measuring tasks with grid as a tool should also be increased.

Megjegyzések:The meeting Researches in Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Sciences was held in Hajdúszoboszló, Hungary from the 26th to the 28th of January, 2018. It was organized by the Doctoral School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences of University of Debrecen. The 61 participants - including 47 lectures and 17 PhD students - came from 8 countries, 21 cities and represented 37 institutions of higher and secondary education. After the warm welcome of László Csernoch, vice rector for academic affairs of University of Debrecen the conference was opened by professor Gyula Maksa, leader of the Didactic Program of the Doctoral School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences of University of Debrecen. He welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of the fact that the conference was held this year at a new location, in Hajdúszoboszló, in Hungary. The annual conference this year was held for the tenth time. It was dedicated to Andr?as Ambrus and Károly Lajkó on the occasion of their 75th birthday. They both played a decisive role in the development of the mathematics didactic research community in Hungary since 1999 and are still significant members of it. The subjects presented in the lectures and posters of the conference were of great variety. Beyond the use of alternative methods in teaching mathematics, as well as surveys on students thinking there were several lectures on digital technology using in mathematics and computer science education. The conference venue, Hajdúszoboszló is a small city near to Debrecen famous for its thermal baths. A very memorable event was the bathing in the Termal Spa of Hotel Aurum. In his closing speech, professor Zsolt Páles, leader of the Doctoral School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences of University of Debrecen appreciated the high quality of the lectures, with special regard to the works of the invited lecturers and PhD students. He also gave his thanks to all the lecturers, the chairs of sessions, and also to the main organizers Eszter Kónya, whose work essentially contributed to the success of the conference. Subsequently, we provide the abstracts of the lectures in alphabetical order of the authors' names.

Cím:Is it possible to develop some elements of metacognition in a Mathematics classroom environment? / Márton Kiss, Eszter Kónya
Dátum:2020
ISSN:1589-7389
Megjegyzések:In an earlier exploratory survey, we investigated the metacognitive activities of 9th grade students, and found that they have only limited experience in the "looking back" phase of the problem solving process. This paper presents the results of a teaching experiment focusing on ninth-grade students' metacognitive activities in the process of solving several open-ended geometry problems. We conclude that promoting students' metacognitive abilities makes their problem solving process more effective.

Megjegyzések:The role of thinking is significant in both mathematics and chess. Although the constant use of abstraction and the use of logical quantifiers appear in other types of thinking, it is more important in mathematics than any other type of thinking. The types of stating or proving probability and proving existence where we do not give the existing objective are mainly characterise mathematical thinking. These typical features of mathematical thinking unavoidably appear in asimple form in the youngest 12-14 year-old students' mathematical education. The exploration of the common elements of chess thinking and mathematical thinking helps in developing students' mathematical thinking by teaching chess.
