Megjegyzések:The increase in road networks facilitates the dispersal of many species of plants along roadsides. In these special habitats, the use of deicing salt can provide suitable habitat conditions for theestablishment of stress-tolerant halophytes. This study investigates the spread of an alienhalophyte Cochlearia danica in continental Europe. This species is native to the Atlantic shoresof Europe, has already spread in many countries along roadsides and was recently discovered inHungary. We performed a literature review to track the European spread of this species, andinvestigated the Hungarian occurrences in detail. Then we determined the ability of this species toadapt to local soil conditions by means of soil analyses and germination tests using 19 differentNaCl concentrations and alkaline soils. To estimate the rate of spread, we estimated the size of thefour Hungarian populations in 2016 and 2017, and at the same time we measured the number offlowering stems, number of flowers in an inflorescence, number of seeds per fruit and seed mass.Cochlearia danica is recorded growing along roadsides in eight countries in continental Europe.Literature data indicate a rapid spread of this species along European roads, of 62?65 km/year.In Hungary this species is recorded at four roadside localities characterized by a high soil saltcontent. The relationship between NaCl concentration and percentage germination followeda sigmoidal curve. Germination tests revealed a significant negative effect of NaCl concentrationon germination above 0.5% NaCl, but germination occurred even on extremely saline substrateswith a 2% NaCl concentration. The area of the largest Hungarian population decreased by morethan 99% and that of the second largest population increased by more than 30% between 2016 and2017. Even though this species can adapt to high salinity in the soil, these rapid and markedchanges in population size indicate that the population dynamics of this species may depend oninteractions between the amount of local precipitation and soil type. Our study indicates that weshould expect further occurrences of C. danica along roads.

Megjegyzések:Plant species performance in rangelands highly depends on the effect of grazing and also on the occurrence of unpalatable benefactor species that can act as biotic refuges protecting neighboring plants from herbivores. The balance between facilitation and competition may changes with the benefactor density. Despite the high number of studies on the role of biotic refuges, the density dependent effects of unpalatable herbaceous plants on the performance of other species, and on the habitat heterogeneity of rangelands are still unclear. Therefore, we performed a study to test the following hypotheses: (i) Performances of understory species follow a humped-back relationship along the density gradient of the unpalatable benefactor species. (ii) Small-scale heterogeneity of the vegetation decreases with increasing benefactor density. We studied meadow steppes with medium intensity cattle grazing in Hungary. We surveyed understory species' performance (number of flowering shoots and cover scores) along the density gradient of a common, native unpalatable species (Althaea officinalis). Our findings supported both hypotheses. We found unimodal relationship between the benefactor cover and both the flowering success and richness of understory species. Moreover, small-scale heterogeneity declined with increasing benefactor cover. In this study we detected a humped-back pattern of facilitation along the density gradient of an herbaceous benefactor in pastures. Indeed, this pattern was predictable based on such conceptual models like ?consumer pressure-abiotic stress model', ?humped-back model', ?intermediate disturbance hypothesis' and ?disturbance heterogeneity model'; but until now the validity of these relationships has not been demonstrated for herbaceous species. By the demonstration of this effect between herbaceous species we can better forecast the responses of grasslands to changes in management.

Megjegyzések:Restoring near-natural grasslands on roadsides is an excellent opportunity to support native biodiversity and provide ecosystem services that benefit the safety and functionality of road networks. Although several best practices and case studies are available on biodiversity-friendly roadside revegetation measures, their application is quite scarce, and, in practice, ecological aspects are rarely considered. To restore and preserve diverse and native roadside vegetation, we suggest (1) facilitating discussion, cooperation, and knowledge transfer between ecologists and agencies responsible for roadside vegetation management, (2) prioritizing the use of native plant species in roadside restoration and revegetation, as well as increasing regional capacities for native seed production, (3) supporting the application of biodiversity-friendly management practices of roadside vegetation, and (4) inventorying and conserving remnant semi-natural roadside grasslands.
