From European priority species to characteristic apophyte: Epipactis tallosii (Orchidaceae) / Kristóf Süveges, Viktor Löki, Ádám Lovas-Kiss, Tibor Ljubka, Réka Fekete, Attila Takács, Orsolya Vincze, Balázs András Lukács, Attila Molnár V.

Megjegyzések:
Epipactis tallosii is considered as one of the highly threatened European orchid species due to its local distribution and small isolated populations that are characterized by decreasing trends. The species is now enlisted in the endangered (EN) category of the Red List. Nevertheless, during the last decade, multiple new populations of the species were found in Hungary, while our feld surveys indicated that E. tallosii populations regularly occur in poplar (Populus) plantations. Here we conducted a thorough feld survey of poplar plantations, by visiting 182 plantations in Hungary and surrounding countries in the Pannonian Biogeographic Region. We found E. tallosii in 23% of the visited plantations, and counted a total of c. 4000 generative shoots. Moreover, we documented the occurrence of the species to four countries, where it has not been reported before: Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. Alien and indigenous/mixed poplar plantations were similarly likely to harbour populations of E. tallosii. Our study suggests that the distribution area and number of populations of E. tallosii is much larger than previously assumed, and that poplar plantations serve as suitable habitat islands in the agricultural landscapes for this orchid. In the light of our results, we suggest the reassessment of the IUCN category of E. tallosii and to re-categorize it as Near Threatened (NT).

Megjegyzések:
Közleményünk célja a Magyarország edényes növényfajainak elterjedési atlaszatérképeinek kiegészítése, főként aktuális előfordulási adatokkal. Összesen 297 edényes taxon előfordulási adatait közöljük az ország egész területéről, mintegy 247 flóratérképezési negyedkvadrátból. Az adatok között a ritkább taxonok (például Armoracia macrocarpa (Waldst. et Kit.) Kit. exBaumg., Samolus valerandi L., Epipactis voethii Robatsch) mellett országosan elterjedt, de többékevésbé adathiányos fajok (például Ranunculus ficaria L., Viola kitaibeliana Roem. et Schult., Gageavillosa (M. Bieb.) Duby), illetve adventív fajok (például Cymbalaria muralis G. Gaertn., B. Mey. et Scherb.,Potentilla indica (Andrews) Focke, Tragus racemosus (L.) All.) esetében is közöljük az atlasz térképeihez képest újnak bizonyuló lelőhelyeket.

Plants dispersed by a non-frugivorous migrant change throughout the annual cycle / Renáta Urgyán, Balázs A. Lukács, Réka Fekete, Attila Molnár V., András Nagy, Orsolya Vincze, Andy J. Green, Ádám Lovas-Kiss

Aim: Migratory waterfowl are important endozoochory vectors for a range of plants lacking fleshy fruits. Our aim was to study the critical question of how endozoochory rates change throughout the annual cycle, and how this relates to plant life-form and phenology. Location: Lake Velence, Hungary. Time period: 2017-2018. Major taxa studied: Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Angiospermae, Charophyta. Methods: We studied waterfowl endozoochory, quantifying seeds and other diaspores dispersed by mallards by collecting faecal samples monthly (ntotal = 670) at a Hungarian lake. We tested the germinability of all seeds recovered from the faecal samples. Main conclusions: We extracted 5,760 seeds representing 35 plant taxa from mallard faecal samples, and 40% of these seeds germinated successfully following gut passage. We found major differences between seasons in the species composition of the seeds recovered. The peak in species diversity and in abundance of terrestrial seeds coincided with the spring migration of mallards. Importantly, endozoochory was only strongly synchronized with seed production in submerged, but not in emergent or terrestrial plants, illustrating the potential for endozoochory of seeds ingested from the soil seed bank. Overall, our results suggest that endozoochory by migratory waterfowl is a strong and underestimated driver of plant distributions, and is likely to facilitate plant range shifts under climate change, and after introduction of alien species.
