Megjegyzések:Plants are especially useful as biological indicators to assess air pollution and the effects of urbanisation. The aim of this study was to investigate tree species' sensitivity to air pollution using the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI), the dust content (PM10) of leaves, and the heavy metal concentration of leaves. Sampling sites were in a city park (urban area), a location on the edge of the city (suburban area), and a forested location (rural area) along an urbanisation gradient in the city of Vienna in Austria. Leaf samples were collected from Acer platanoides, Fraxinus excelsior, and Quercus robur tree species. The APTI was determined by measuring the content of relative water ascorbic acid and chlorophyll, and the pH of leaf extracts. We found significant difference among species in their relative water content, pH, and content of ascorbic acid and chlorophyll Additionally, we found significant differences in chlorophyll content and pH based on sampling site. The highest chlorophyll content was found in A. platanoides. There was a significant difference among species in Al, Ba, Cr, Ni, and Zn concentrations in each stage of urbanisation. Based on APTI values, the studied species were sensitive indicators of air pollution; thus, they are useful bioindicator species, and they are suitable for air pollution monitoring. We demonstrated the effects of urbanisation with these bioindicator species with elevated PM10, Al, Ba, Cu, Fe, Sr, and Zn concentrations in urban area samples.

Megjegyzések:Along an urbanization gradient, we explored the soil metal pollution in Vienna, Austria. We analyzed the physical and chemical parameters of topsoil from urban, suburban, and rural areas. The following elements were quantified using ICP-OES technique: Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Sr, and Zn. For heavy metals, PI (pollution index) values were used to assess the level of pollution. We found that the concentration of Cu, Pb, Sr, and Zn was higher in the urban and suburban area than in the rural area. The PI values indicated a moderate level of pollution by Cd (1 ? PI ? 2) along the urbanization gradient. We found a low level of pollution for Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn (PI ? 1) in studied areas. Our findings demonstrated the presence of anthropogenic contamination, and it is likely that traffic emission may be the major source of metal pollution in Vienna. Our findings also demonstrated that the elemental analysis of soil and the values of PI are adequate indicators of the level of pollution based on soil sample analysis in urban ecosystems.

Megjegyzések:The automated video tracking of the activity/movement of an experimental organism is essential for reliable, repeatable quantitative analyses in behavioral ecology and also in other disciplines. There are only some open-access, open-source automated tracking software applications that can track unmarked organisms. Moreover, several of these software applications are substantially affected by brightness and differences in the lighting conditions of the video recording. Our Python-based software, called BugTracker, uses the latest innovations in computer vision technologies to solve these problems. By analyzing videos with considerably different lighting conditions with BugTracker and other available software, we demonstrate that our software could reliably track the studied organisms of any size and speed. Additionally, the results provide accurate measures of the organism's movements. BugTracker is the most reliable currently available, easy-to-use, and automated tracking software compatible with the Windows, Linux, and MacOS operating systems.

Cím:Use of Leaves as Bioindicator to Assess Air Pollution Based on Composite Proxy Measure (APTI), Dust Amount and Elemental Concentration of Metals / Molnár Vanda Éva, Tőzsér Dávid, Szabó Szilárd, Tóthmérész Béla, Simon Edina
Dátum:2020

Megjegyzések:Monitoring air pollution and environmental health are crucial to ensure viable cities. We assessed the usefulness of the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI) as a composite index of environmental health. Fine and coarse dust amount and elemental concentrations of Celtis occidentalis and Tilia ? europaea leaves were measured in June and September at three sampling sites (urban, industrial, and rural) in Debrecen city (Hungary) to assess the usefulness of APTI. The correlation between APTI values and dust amount and elemental concentrations was also studied. Fine dust, total chlorophyll, and elemental concentrations were the most sensitive indicators of pollution. Based on the high chlorophyll and low elemental concentration of tree leaves, the rural site was the least disturbed by anthropogenic activities, as expected. We demonstrated that fine and coarse dust amount and elemental concentrations of urban tree leaves are especially useful for urban air quality monitoring. Correlations between APTI and other measured parameters were also found. Both C. occidentalis and T. europaea were sensitive to air pollution based on their APTI values. Thus, the APTI of tree leaves is an especially useful proxy measure of air pollution, as well as environmental health.

Megjegyzések:Survival of organisms in polluted habitats is a key factor regarding their long-term population persistence. To avoid harmfulphysiological effects of pollutants'accumulation in organisms, decontamination and excretion could be effective mechanisms.Among invertebrates, ground beetles are reliable indicators of environmental pollution. Published results, however, are incon-sistent, as some studies showed effective decontamination and excretion of pollutants, while others demonstrated severe toxicsymptoms due to extreme accumulation. Using ground beetles as model organisms, we tested our pollution intensity-dependentdisposal hypothesis for five pollutants (Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn) among four soil pollution intensity levels (low, moderate, high, and extreme) by categorical meta-analysis on published data. According to our hypothesis, decontamination and excretion ofpollutants in ground beetles are effective in lowly or moderately polluted habitats, while disposal is ineffective in highly orextremely polluted ones, contributing to intense accumulation of pollutants in ground beetles. In accordance with the hypothesis,we found that in an extremely polluted habitat, accumulation of Cd and Pb in ground beetles was significantly higher than inlowly polluted ones. These findings may suggest the entomoremediation potential of ground beetles in an extremely pollutedenvironment.

Megjegyzések:Remediation with plants is a technology used to decrease soil or water contamination. In this study we assessed the remediation potential of two weed species (Chenopodium album and Tripleurospermum inodorum) in a moderately metal-contaminated area. Metal concentrations were studied in roots, stems and leaves, in order to assess correlations in metal concentrations between those in soil and plants. Furthermore, we calculated bioaccumulation factor (BAF), bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) values to study the accumulation of metals from soil to plants and translocation within plants. We found correlation in metal concentrations between soil and plants. The metal accumulation potential was low in both species, indicating low BAF and BCF values. In contrast, high TF values were found for Mn, Ni, Sr, Zn, Ba, Fe, Cu and Pb in C. album, and for Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn and Sr in T. inodorum. Our results demonstrated that the potential of C. album and T. inodorum might be limited in phytoextraction processes; however, when accumulated, metals are successfully transported to aboveground plant organs. Thus, to achieve the efficient remediation of metal-contaminated soils, removal of the aboveground plant organs is recommended, by which soil disturbance can also be avoided.

Megjegyzések:We tested the suitability of Salix viminalis forphytoextraction with the analysis of selected elements in soil, root, and leaf, and by visual tree condition assessment in anarea with varying levels of contamination. Bioconcentrationfactor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) were used to assessthe phytoextraction potential of willows. The middle part ofthe study area was strongly contaminated, while the northernand southern parts were moderately contaminated. We foundincreasing element concentrations toward deeper layers. Meanconcentrations of elements in roots were similar among thethree parts, while in leaves the highest concentrations werefound in the strongly contaminated part of the study area.Tree condition scores were the lowest in the strongly contaminated part of the study area, which was caused by Al, Ca, K, Mg, Ni, Sr, and Zn concentration. These elements induced leafdisease and leaf feeders. The highest BCF values were foundfor Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in root, and for Cd and Zn in leaves, indicating that S. viminalis had high accumulation potential ofthese elements. Furthermore, TF values were high for Cd, Mn,Sr, and Zn. Our results also demonstrated that soil elementcomposition has major influence on the condition ofS. viminalis individuals. Furthermore, visual condition assessment was found to be a useful tool to assess thephytoextraction potential of trees.
