Megjegyzések:The number of plants per unit area is extremely important for maize (Zea mays L.) production, and numerous research has been carried out to determine the optimum plant density, but the findings are still not put into practice at farm level.The aim of the present work was to determine the optimum plant density of various hybrids at different yield levels in order to elaborate a scientifically-based system with which hybrid-specific plant densities can be recommended for areas with different environmental circumstances.The results of widespread tests performed in Hungary between 2009 and 2015 demonstrated that yields are determined by close interactions between the genotype, the year, the location and the applied plant density. The results of analysis of variance revealed that all four factors had a significant effect on the yield. Growing the right hybrid at the right density is responsible for the success of maize production, so the present findings could contribute to the achievement of rational choices of genotype.When the impact of changes in plant density on agronomic traits was investigated, significant effects were observed on plant height, ear height, root and stalk breakage, but there was no significant effect on silking, tasselling and test weight. Greater plant density reduced the values of the yield components, while the number of kernel rows was found to be fixed, unaffected by the plant density. It was concluded that different hybrids have specific plant density responses, which also varies at different yield levels.
