Megjegyzések:The aim of our study was to verify the effectiveness of passive nature conservation with regard to the preservation of species, by examining a typical mesozooplankton community. We investigated five oxbow lakes which were similar to each other in terms of size, depth and close-to-each, but which differed markedly from one to another in terms of lake management. One is under passive protection, the others are under different forms of management. Based on the NMDS (Non-metric Dimensional Scaling) analysis, we identified the variable (transparency) which is responsible for the segregation. In the case of rare species IndVal (Indicator Value) analysis was used to evaluate the occurrence and significance of indicator species. We also found marked differences in the species composition; seven species showed indicator values for the protected oxbow lake, five of which were significant (p <?0.001). In contrast, in the case of the other four oxbow lakes, a total of one species showed an indicator value. Finally, regression tree analysis was used to distinguish the oxbow lakes from each other for both common and mass-occurring species. Among the mass-occurring species, the protected oxbow lake is characterized by a large number of Acropreus harpae (Baird, 1835), while in case of the other, non-protected, oxbow lakes Alona guttata (Sars, 1862) and Alonella excisa (Fischer, 1854) are the basis for the separate classification. There is a positive effect of passive protection regarding the quantitative and qualitative occurrence of the zooplankton community. Our study highlights the importance of this kind of passive protection in the life of a particular water body and advocates that their protection should be maintained.

Megjegyzések:One of the main threats of our time is the increasing water demand not only globally, but also locally. These are often met at the expense of ecological water demand, jeopardizing the structural and operational conditions necessary to maintain good ecological status in aquatic and wetland habitats. This is why it is of great importance to explore possible water retention options. In 2019, based on the long-term data series on the water level of River Tisza, we studied the frequency and extent of flooding in the floodplain between Tiszabercel and Gávavencsellő, where there are valuable wetlands, including a ♭sanctuary'-type backwater. This was necessary because recently the floodplains have undergone negative changes. Their water volume has gradually decreased, their valuable wildlife has become rarer, some of them have completely dried out in the autumn and even one of them has burned out. From the analysis of the examined 48-years data, it could be concluded that flooding was relatively frequent in the sampled area, but the extent of water coverage had no significant effect either in space or time. It was also found that only water levels above 700 cm (based on the water meter of Tiszabercel, 98.36 mBf) could adequately ensure that the water bodies are filled up and flushed out. However, there is little chance of this, because of four reasons: (1) water levels of this height are becoming rare; (2) the duration and height of high water levels are mostly short in time; (3) water levels of several water bodies are artificially decreased; (4) the drainage effect of the River Tisza ? which has been significantly incised after the river regulation ? prevails in the area. Due to all, in the future, there would be a great need to maintain the water levels in the floodplain wetlands as efficiently as possible after the floods ? for which we have made specific proposals for the places and methods to preserve the ecologically necessary amount of water.

Megjegyzések:The spatial and temporal patterns of phytoplankton in relation to physical and chemical properties were studied in a drinking water reservoir - the Lázbérc Reservoir - located in north-east Hungary. The main objectives were to determine the role of the hydrologic regime in structuring algal growth and the effects of physical and chemical variables on the coexistence of a dominant species: cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Kützing and an eukaryotic dinoflagellates, Ceratium hirundinella (O.F. Müller) Dujardin. The results suggest that nutrients (TP, NH4?N and NO3?N), turbidity, and the hydrologic regime play an important role in regulating the occurrence of investigated species. The rainy summer period resulting in a mixing of the water column, and the low level of nitrogen coupled with the internal release of phosphorus from the lake sediment under brief periods of anoxia promote cyanobacterial bloom. During this period, the water column was characterised by high turbidity, which created favourable conditions for developing a huge C. hirundinella biomass and the simultaneous occurrence of M. aeruginosa. This study also demonstrated - that contrary to what was previously known, deep standing waters in the temperate zone are not only dimictic (mixing twice a year during the spring and the fall), but they can also be mixed during the summer period due to continued rainfall, which equalizes the temperature in the whole water column. This can promote the occurrence of cyanobacterial and eukaryote planktonic organisms.

Cím:Possible mediation of Cladocera species by a researcher's chest wader / Arber Hajredini, Florent Demelezi, Imre Somlyai, István Grigorszky, Csaba Berta
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2405-8440
Megjegyzések:Mediation of aquatic species has become an increasing problem for the last few decades. With the increasing commercial import, species' direct or indirect spread can gain more space. There are several ways for them to land in their new home and spread through the country. Most of the aquatic species are spread by waterways, boats, vehicles, or even with the help of humans. Cladocerans have a good dispersal ability, thanks to their small size, additionally they possess good adaptation, and mechanisms to develop resting eggs. Benthic or littoral species can be mediated much more easily due to their living space, and with the help of human activities (e.g., scientists, anglers and people working in water bodies) they have a higher chance to colonize new habitats. Our goal was to explore if Cladocera species might be mediated by a scientist chest wader, while sampling in similar-sized, close-to-each other lakes, with different utilization. Most of the species were found in abandoned fishing lakes, followed by oxbow lakes (protected), and ultimately in intensively fished lakes. NMDS showed that samples from lakes with the same utilization are similar to each other. Differently utilized lakes can have various Cladocera species, even though they are closely related to each other. Based on the results, scientists can mediate species on their chest wader from lake to lake and may deteriorate the results. We recommend a necessary chest wader cleaning after every sampling process, especially when samples are taken from differently utilized lakes.

Megjegyzések:In Lake Ladoga (northwestern Russia), we found a diatom, putatively Fragilaria sublanceolatabaikali, an endemic species from Lake Baikal (southeastern Siberia, Russia). To determine whether this population matches a previously recognized species from Lake Baikal and assess how it differs from other similar Fragilaria taxa, we studied the valve morphology of three morphologically similar Fragilaria populations (the putative F. sublanceolata-baikali, F. pectinalis and F. perminuta) sampled in Lake Ladoga, along with a population of F. sublanceolata-baikali sampled in Lake Baikal. We used light and scanning electron microscopy with a combination of traditional and geometric morphometric methods. To analyze covariation between the valve shape and size (i.e., allometry), we examined differences in the ontogenetic?allometric trajectories at both the interspecific and intraspecific levels. In addition, the effect of size correction of the valve shape on species differentiation was tested. Traditional morphometrics revealed that F. sublanceolata-baikali is distinguished from F. pectinalis and F. perminuta by valve length, while F. pectinalis and F. perminuta are distinguished by striae density. All three species of Fragilaria showed separate and parallel allometric trajectories. In contrast, the two populations of F. sublanceolata-baikali were on a common allometric trajectory, indicating the conspecificity between these populations. Prior to allometric correction, geometric morphometrics was not able fully discriminate between the three Fragilaria species. After allometric correction, the three Fragilaria species were clearly separated in a size-corrected morphospace, whereas the two populations of F. sublanceolata-baikali formed a tightly overlapping group. Thus, we conclude that geometric morphometrics can reliably distinguish between these morphologically similar species of Fragilaria, but only after accounting for allometric shape variation. Our study confirmed morphological similarity between the two geographically distant populations of F. sublanceolata-baikali, which indicates that this taxon can be considered as invasive in Lake Ladoga.

Megjegyzések:During our work, we investigated the physical and chemical variables of a small surface watercourse to investigate how different anthropogenic effects affect its water quality. Along this small watercourse, there are well-separated areas that are affected by various anthropogenic effects. In addition to its origin and branches, in many places it is surrounded by agricultural land with insufficient buffer zones, which burdens the small watercourse with nitrogen and phosphorus forms. In the lower stages, artificial damming inhibits the natural flow of the Tócó Canal, thereby creating eutrophicated stagnant water areas. This is further strengthened by, in many cases, illegal communal and used water intake that further burdens the small watercourse. Considering the experience of our investigation, it can be stated that the examined small watercourse could barely suffer human impacts, and it could be described with great heterogeneity using physical and chemical variables. We experienced that this heterogeneity caused by anthropogenic effects appeared in all hydrologic states and seasons. Furthermore, our research showed that these small watercourses had such high heterogeneity that their monitoring and examination should be taken just as seriously as when it comes to larger watercourses.

Megjegyzések:We investigated the effect of land use based on the dominant phytoplankton and physicalchemical variables in the different areas of the Tigris River, within the city of Mosul. Agricultural and urban activities have a significant impact on the water quality of the river. Regardless of physical and chemical variables, phytoplankton act as a bio-indicator of water quality due to their fast and sensitive response to changes in the environment. Our research was conducted in the Tigris River within the city of Mosul by examining the phytoplankton species and the physical-chemical variables at 16 sites during each vegetation period. Point and non-point source pollutants have affected the Tigris River within the city of Mosul, getting into the river from upstream through agricultural activities and by urban activities in the middle section of the city, respectively from both banks. Based on our results, we observed the highest phytoplankton abundance during the October sampling periods, while the lowest occurred during the July sampling period, which was associated with maximum water temperature and absence of rain. According to our study, land use (e.g., agricultural, and urban activities) greatly affected the dominant phytoplankton species and physical-chemical variables of the Tigris River. Oscillatoria sp. dominated all seasons in the agricultural region, while at the same time, we observed an increase in the number of phytoplankton species caused by the nutrient availability upstream on the river. The effects of climate have very significant and characteristic effects in this area, which basically determine the community of organisms and the water quality; the effects resulting from anthropogenic activity significantly modify this. Based on our investigation, in the part of the Tigris River connected to Mosul, we found a clear connection between the pollution caused and the effects of different land uses, through the examination of the algal community and physical-chemical variables in different periods of the year.

Megjegyzések:In our work, we sought to answer whether we find differences among the various zones of an oxbow lake with different land uses based on physico-chemical variables and dominant algal plankton species. The two ends of the oxbow lake are bordered by settlements, and near them there are open water areas where fishing is the major utilization form. Between the two open water areas we find a protected area with a large aquatic plant coverage and two transition zones towards the open water areas. The oxbow lake receives periodic water replenishment only at one end from one of the open water areas. During summer?due to the lack of rain?the water of the oxbow lake is used for irrigation in the surrounding arable land, so the water level fluctuation can be significant in the riverbed. Our study was performed within a vegetation period of spring, early summer, mid-summer, and fall. In connection with the ecological classification of a smaller water body, studies on the physical and chemical properties of the water and the composition of the algal plankton are usually carried out in few places and relatively infrequently. The characteristics of a water body are also influenced by seasonal changes, which can be the changes in the extent of vegetation coverage, the way land is used and the possibility of water replenishment, to which the algal community usually responds with changes. Based on our study, it can be said that even in a relatively small water body, we found a large differences based on the chemical and physical properties of the water and the characteristic algal species. Open water zones, areas with large macrovegetation coverage, and the transition zones were separated from each other.
