Megjegyzések:The super Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction eXperiment (sPHENIX) at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider will perform high-precision measurements of jets and heavy flavor observables for a wide selection of nuclear collision systems, elucidating the microscopic nature of strongly interacting matter ranging from nucleons to the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma. A prototype of the sPHENIX calorimeter system was tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility as experiment T-1044 in the spring of 2016. The electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal) prototype is composed of scintillating fibers embedded in a mixture of tungsten powder and epoxy. The hadronic calorimeter (HCal) prototype is composed of tilted steel plates alternating with the plastic scintillator. Results of the test beam reveal the energy resolution for electrons in the EMCal is 2.8%? 15.5%/?E and the energy resolution for hadrons in the combined EMCal plus HCal system is 13.5%?64.9%/?E. These results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed calorimeter system satisfies the sPHENIX specifications.

Megjegyzések:The effects of radiation damage in silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) from gamma rays have been measured and compared with the damage produced by neutrons. Several types of multipixel photon counters from Hamamatsu were exposed to gamma rays and neutrons at the Solid State Gamma Ray Irradiation Facility (SSGRIF) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Institute for Nuclear Research (Atomki) in Debrecen, Hungary. The gamma ray exposures ranged from 1 krad to 1 Mrad and the neutron exposures ranged from 10 8 to 10 12 n/cm 2 . The main effect of gamma ray damage is an increase in the noise and leakage current in the irradiated devices, similar to what is seen from neutron damage, but the level of damage is considerably less at comparable high levels of exposure. In addition, the damage from gamma rays saturates after a few hundred krad, while the damage from neutrons shows no sign of saturation, suggestive of different damage mechanisms in the two cases. The change in optical absorption in the window material of the SiPMs due to radiation was also measured. This paper was carried out in order to evaluate the use of SiPMs for particle physics applications with moderate levels of radiation exposures.

Dátum:2018
ISSN:1844-9689 2343-8908
Megjegyzések:Neural networks are used as triggers at highenergy physics detectors. These triggers can separate the event that must be saved for later analysis from the other events or noises. Using the raw data of the detector, the signal and the background can be separated offline. After separation, sets of signals and backgrounds can be used to train the neural network. A gas-filled detector (multiwire proportional chamber) was used to study the trigger at different noise levels to find the most stable neural network that tolerates the random hits. The ratio of the recognized and the unrecognized signal and background events is used for the measurement. Its stability is part of the systematical uncertainty.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:Presented are the first measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries (A_N) for neutral pions and eta mesons in p + Au and p + Al collisions at root{s_NN}=200 GeV in the pseudorapidity range |[eta]| < 0.35 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The asymmetries are consistent with zero, similar to those for midrapidity neutral pions and eta mesons produced in p + p collisions. These measurements show no evidence of additional effects that could potentially arise from the more complex partonic environment present in proton-nucleus collisions.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:2469-9985 2469-9993
Megjegyzések:The measurement of direct photons from Au + Au collisions at ,/sNN = 39 and 62.4 GeV in the transverse-momentum range 0.4 < pT < 3 Gev/c is presented by the PHENIX collaboration at the BNLRelativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant direct-photon yield is observed in both collision systems. A universal scaling is observed when the direct-photon pT spectra for different center-of-mass energies and for different centrality selections at ,/sNN = 62.4 GeV is scaled with (dNch/d eta)alpha for alpha = 1.21 +/- 0.04. This scaling also holds true for direct-photon spectra from Au + Au collisions at ,/sNN = 200 GeV measured earlier by PHENIX, as well as the spectra from Pb + Pb at ,/sNN = 2760 GeV published by ALICE. The scaling power alpha seems to be independent of pT, center of mass energy, and collision centrality. The spectra from different collision energies have a similar shape up to pT of 2 Gev/c. The spectra have a local inverse slope Teff increasing with pT of 0.174 +/- 0.018 Gev/c in the range 0.4 < pT < 1.3 Gev/c and increasing to 0.289 +/- 0.024 Gev/c for 0.9 < pT < 2.1 Gev/c. The observed similarity of low-pT direct-photon production from ,/sNN = 39 to 2760 GeV suggests a common source of direct photons for the different collision energies and event centrality selections, and suggests a comparable space-time evolution of direct-photon emission.

Cím:Measurements of second-harmonic Fourier coefficients from azimuthal anisotropies in p plus p, p plus Au, d + Au, and 3He+Au collisions at root sNN=200 GeV / PHENIX Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2469-9985 2469-9993
Megjegyzések:Recently, the PHENIX Collaboration has published second-and third-harmonic Fourier coefficients v2 and v3 for midrapidity (|eta| < 0.35) charged hadrons in 0%-5% central p + Au, d + Au, and 3He +Au collisions at N/sNN = 200 GeV, utilizing three sets of two-particle correlations for two detector combinations with different pseudorapidity acceptance [Acharya et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, 024901 (2022)]. This paper extends these measurements of v2 to all centralities in p + Au, d + Au, and 3He +Au collisions, as well as p + p collisions, as a function of transverse momentum (pT) and event multiplicity. The kinematic dependence of v2 is quantified as the ratio R of v2 between the two detector combinations as a function of event multiplicity for 0.5 < pT < 1 and 2 < pT < 2.5 GeV/c. A multiphase-transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the observed v2 in most-central to midcentral d + Au and 3He +Au collisions. However, the AMPT model systematically overestimates the measurements in p + p, p + Au, and peripheral d + Au and 3He +Au collisions, indicating a higher nonflow contribution in the AMPT model than in the experimental data. The AMPT model fails to describe the observed R for 0.5 < pT < 1 GeV/c, but there is qualitative agreement with the measurements for 2 < pT < 2.5 GeV/c.

Cím:Improving constraints on gluon spin-momentum correlations in transversely polarized protons via midrapidity open-heavy-flavor electrons in p plus p collisions at psffi=200 GeV / PHENIX Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:Polarized proton-proton collisions provide leading-order access to gluons, presenting an opportunity to constrain gluon spin-momentum correlations within transversely polarized protons and enhance our understanding of the three-dimensional structure of the proton. Midrapidity open-heavy-flavor production ffiffiat p s1/4 200 GeV is dominated by gluon-gluon fusion, providing heightened sensitivity to gluon dynamics relative to other production channels. Transverse single-spin asymmetries of positrons and electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays are measured at midrapidity using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These charge-separated measurements are sensitive to gluon correlators that can in principle be related to gluon orbital angular momentum via model calculations. Explicit constraints on gluon correlators are extracted for two separate models, one of which had not been constrained previously.
