Cím:Effects of heat stress-induced oxidative stress on the reproduction of sows and its alleviation by dietary antioxidants: a review / Ortega Arth David Sol Valmoria, Xayalath Somsy, Lugata James Kachunhwa, Szabó Csaba
Dátum:2022
Megjegyzések:Sows are susceptible to high ambient temperature, and when it exceeds the level of their thermal comfort, they experience heat stress (HS). HS causes overproduction and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells and can disturb the animals' antioxidant defense system, leading to oxidative stress (OS). Such stressor causes oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, and DNA in cells and tissue damage. HS-induced OS also harms the sows' reproductive development. It can negatively affect the physiological process of the animals' reproduction from the maturation of oocytes to fertilization, development of the embryo, and pregnancy. It even extends to their reproductive performance. Although HS harms female reproduction, information regarding its induced stressor (OS) as the significant contributor to sows' reduced reproductive performance is limited. Therefore, this paper aims to review the effects of HS-induced OS on the reproductive performance of sows, and with due consideration to its nature, this work will also look into the effectiveness of dietary antioxidants against its adverse effects. Based on the literature, sows exposed to HS had increased plasma concentration of OS biomarkers (malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl, and 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine) and reduced activity of endogenous antioxidants, signifying OS. This resulted in reduced reproductive performance of sows, including lower litter weight at birth and a higher number of low birth weight piglets (higher variance) which causes high pre-weaning mortality. Moreover, the sows' colostrum, milk yield, and nutrient concentration are reduced upon exposure to the said stressor. Based on the information from various researches, dietary supplementation of antioxidants (vitamin C, E, and minerals Se and Zn) through the diet at various stages of sows' life could ameliorate HS-induced OS. Such amelioration can be supported by several researches which reported improvement in the sows' antioxidant status by increased activity of endogenous antioxidants (SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px) and subsequently improving their reproductive performance. Based on the information gathered, the enhancement of the antioxidant status and improvement of the sows' reproductive performance was exhibited when dietary levels of antioxidants are supplemented at high levels, suggesting the importance of regulating the dietary antioxidant levels in the diet upon HS challenge.

Megjegyzések:The Philippine livestock industry is a vital component in the country's agricultural sector. It contributes around 18.23 percent of the gross output value in agriculture and provides livelihood to many people living in rural areas, signifying its importance with regard to the country's economy. The constantly increasing demand for animal protein associated with the increase of the world's population led to the intensification of livestock production, realized through the various initiatives implemented by the government, such as the import of high producing purebreds of various species. This strategy greatly influenced the country's animal genetic resource's diversity and increased food animals' population; however, it impacted the native breeds of food animals. Understanding the characteristics, performance and value of native and exotic breeds is essential to prioritize their livestock industry existence. Thus, this paper aims to cha racterize various native and exotic breeds of livestock in the Philippines and assess the current conservation of native animals.

Megjegyzések:This study aims to evaluate the effects of the birth weight of crossbred Moo Lath x 18 Duroc (CMD) gilts on their puberty and first mating age, including the body condition 19 and morphology. The litter size and birth weight of their offspring were also evaluated. 20 Eighteen (18) CMD gilts were selected after weaning and kept in an individual pen 1.5 21 x 2 x 1 m after puberty. The gilts were grouped into three groups based on birth weight: 22 groups A, B, and C (with <0.7, ?0.7?0.9?, and >0.9 kg, respectively). 15 mature 23 purebred Moo Lath (PML) gilts reared by farmers were also involved in this study to 24 compare the morphology between the CMD and PML at first mating. There was no 25 significant difference in the age and body weight of CMD gilts at puberty and first 26 mating among the studied groups. However, the gilts in group A showed a lower mean 27 age at puberty, and marginally lighter body weight than those in groups B and C. Birth 28 weight showed a significant influence on the backfat thickness at puberty and first 29 mating (P<0.039 and 0.031). The CMD gilts could have their first mating at 193 days, that is at their 3rd and 4th 30 estrous cycle, with approximately 40 kg of body weight, 38 31 mm of backfat thickness, 90 cm of heart girth, 100 cm of body length, and 51 cm height 32 at wither. The CMD gilts` birth weight did not influence their litter size, but influenced 33 their offspring`s birth weight. There was not significant differences in the body weight 34 at first mating between the CMD and PML gilts, however the average body length and 35 heart girth of CMD gilts were marginally longer.

Megjegyzések:In Laos, pork is the second most common meat source after fish and its demand is constantly growing annually. Recently, pork has been in short supply in urban and rural areas, forcing the Lao government to import thousands of tons from neighbouring countries, particularly Thailand, Vietnam, and China. In view of the earlier-mentioned, this study aimed to look at the current situation of pork production and supply in Vientiane Capital (VC) and the prospects for pork production in VC, Laos. In 2020, Laos had a pig population of about 4.3 million, with over 91.0 % being native pigs and only 366,000 heads being European pig types, with over 54.0 % being reared in VC. In 2019, Laos had 578 commercial pig farms, with 188 farms (33.0 %) of which were located in VC. Despite the fact that most of the commercial pig farms are located in VC, pork demand is still high, with the consequence that consumers need to pay a high price. For example, in 2020, the average price of pork was 46,000 LAK/kg (USA dollar 4.00); it rose up by 22.0 % against 2019 and by 11.0 % from 2015. Several feed raw materials (maize, cassava, and rice bran) are produced in VC, and nearby provinces, which the farmers can use to combat the dramatic changes or instabilities of feed price. We concluded that there is a high potential to develop pig production in VC, especially local breeds considering the high demand for premium pork and more available raw feed materials.

Megjegyzések:However, the livestock sector is considered an essential role in farmers' livelihood, even local breeds are still the critical component of animal breeding in Laos. Thus, there is a need to review the previous, current situation and future prospects for Laos' livestock production. It aimed to study the different traits among the existing dominant local and improved livestock breeds (cattle, pig, and goat) and a more in-depth study on the livestock sector's previous evolving and future prospects. Our findings revealed that the general trend of livestock population in Laos increased year-by-year for over 45 years, except for 1995 to 2000. It was decreased by almost 22% due to the new national strategy on economic revolution. The first foreign breeds were introduced into Laos, i.e., Large White, Landrace, and Duroc in 1980, Red Sindhi bulls in 1998, the frozen semen of Red Brahman 2003, and Bach Thao goats between 2001 to 2003. Unfortunately, many data are still not precise for introducing other foreign breeds like Boer goats, Thai Grey and Red Brahman. There were many missing data on the improvement of livestock breeds in Laos, including the local and improved breeds' reproductive and productive performance, which needs more studies and researches. We concluded that the semi-complex farm operation should be applied to improve livestock breeding and their productions in Laos.
