Megjegyzések:Summary The neighbourhood is recognized as an important unit of analysis in research onthe relation between obesogenic environments and development of obesity. Oneimportant challenge is to define the limits of the residential neighbourhood, asperceived by study participants themselves, in order to improve our understandingof the interaction between contextual features and patterns of obesity. An innova-tive tool was developed in the framework of the SPOTLIGHT project to identifythe boundaries of neighbourhoods as defined by participants in five European ur-ban regions. The aims of this study were (i) to describe self-defined neighbourhood(size and overlap with predefined residential area) according to the characteristicsof the sampling administrative neighbourhoods (residential density and socioeco-nomic status) within the five study regions and (ii) to determine which individualor/and environmental factors are associated with variations in size of self-definedneighbourhoods. Self-defined neighbourhood size varies according to both individ-ual factors (age, educational level, length of residence and attachment toneighbourhood) and contextual factors. These findings have consequences forhow residential neighbourhoods are defined and operationalized and can informhow self-defined neighbourhoods may be used in research on associations betweencontextual characteristics and health outcomes such as obesity.

Megjegyzések:Abstract Background The relation between neighbourhood environmental factors and domain-specific sedentary behaviours among adults remains unclear. This study firstly aims to examine the association of perceived and objectively measured neighbourhood safety, aesthetics, destinations and functionality with transport-related, work-related and leisure-time sedentary behaviour. Secondly, the study aims to assess whether these associations are moderated by age, gender or educational level. Methods In 60 randomly sampled neighbourhoods from 5 urban regions in Europe (Ghent and suburbs, Paris and inner suburbs, Budapest and suburbs, the Randstad, and Greater London), a virtual audit with Google Street View was performed to assess environmental characteristics. A total of 5,205 adult inhabitants of these neighbourhoods reported socio-demographic characteristics, sedentary behaviours, and neighbourhood perceptions in an online survey. Generalized linear mixed models were conducted to examine associations between physical environmental neighbourhood factors and sedentary behaviours. Interaction terms were added to test the moderating role of individual-level socio-demographic variables. Results Lower levels of leisure-time sedentary behaviour (i.e. all leisure activities except television viewing and computer use) were observed among adults who perceived greater numbers of destinations such as supermarkets, recreational facilities, or restaurants in their neighbourhood, and among adults who lived in a neighbourhood with more objectively measured aesthetic features, such as trees, water areas or public parks. Lower levels of work-related sedentary behaviour were observed among adults who perceived less aesthetic features in their neighbourhood, and among adults who lived in a neighbourhood with less objectively measured destinations. Both age, gender and educational level moderated the associations between neighbourhood environmental factors and sedentary behaviours.

Megjegyzések:Background Sedentary behaviour has been associated with obesity and related chronic diseases. Disentangling the nature of this association is complicated due to interactions with other lifestyle factors, such as dietary habits, yet limited research has investigated the relation between domain-specific sedentary behaviours and dietary habits in adults. The aim of this paper was to examine the association between domain-specific sedentary behaviours and dietary habits in adults and to test the moderating effect of age and gender on this association. Methods A total of 6,037 participants from five urban regions in Europe completed an online survey, of which 6,001 were included in the analyses. Multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression analyses were used to examine main associations and interaction effects. Results All domain-specific sedentary behaviours, except transport-related sitting time, were significantly related to dietary habits. In general, having a higher sitting time was related to having less healthy dietary habits, especially for television viewing. Gender did not moderate any of the relations, and age was only a significant moderator in the relation between other leisure sitting time and alcohol consumption. Conclusion Domain-specific sitting behaviours were related to unhealthy dietary behaviours. However, the small effect sizes suggest that individual level behavioural interventions focusing on sedentary behaviour will not be sufficient to improve dietary habits. The fact that almost none of the associations were moderated by age or gender suggests that these associations, and possibly also the effects of interventions targeting both behaviours, may hold across age and gender groups.

This exposure assessment can then be asso-ciated with health outcomes such as obesity. Strengths of virtual audit includecollection of large amount of data, from various geographical contexts, followingstandard protocols. Using data from a virtual audit of obesity-related features car-ried out in five urban European regions, the current study aimed to (i) describe thisinternational virtual audit dataset and (ii) identify neighbourhood patterns that cansynthesize the complexity of such data and compare patterns across regions. Datawere obtained from 4,486 street segments across urban regions in Belgium, France,Hungary, the Netherlands and the UK. We used multiple factor analysis and hierar-chical clustering on principal components to build a typology of neighbourhoodsand to identify similar/dissimilar neighbourhoods, regardless of region. Fourneighbourhood clusters emerged, which differed in terms of food environment,recreational facilities and active mobility features, i.e. the three indicators derivedfrom factor analysis. Clusters were unequally distributed across urban regions.Neighbourhoods mostly characterized by a high level of outdoor recreational facil-ities were predominantly located in Greater London, whereas neighbourhoodscharacterized by high urban density and large amounts of food outlets were mostlylocated in Paris. Neighbourhoods in the Randstad conurbation, Ghent andBudapest appeared to be very similar, characterized by relatively lower residentialdensities, greener areas and a very low percentage of streets offering food andrecreational facility items. These results provide multidimensional constructs ofobesogenic characteristics that may help target at-risk neighbourhoods moreeffectively than isolated features.

Whetherthese unfavourable perceptions are based on objective neighbourhood features orother factors is poorly understood. We examined individual and contextual corre-lates of socioeconomic inequalities in neighbourhood perceptions across five urbanregions in Europe.Data were analysed from 5205 participants of the SPOTLIGHT survey.Participants reported perceptions of their neighbourhood environment with regardto aesthetics, safety, the presence of destinations and functionality of theneighbourhood, which were summed into an overall neighbourhood perceptionsscore. Multivariable multilevel regression analyses were conducted to investigatewhether the following factors were associated with socioeconomic inequalities inneighbourhood perceptions: objectively observed neighbourhood features,neighbourhood social capital, exposure to the neighbourhood, self-rated healthand lifestyle behaviours.Objectively observed traffic safety, aesthetics and the presence of destinations in theneighbourhood explained around 15% of differences in neighbourhood percep-tions between residents of high and low neighbourhoods; levels of neighbourhoodsocial cohesion explained around 52%. Exposure to the neighbourhood, self-ratedhealth and lifestyle behaviours were significant correlates of neighbourhoodperceptions but did not contribute to socioeconomic differences.This cross-European study provided evidence that socioeconomic differences inneighbourhood perceptions are not only associated with objective neighbourhoodfeatures but also with social cohesion. Levels of physical activity, sleep duration,self-rated health, happiness and neighbourhood preference were also associatedwith neighbourhood perceptions.

Megjegyzések:This cross-sectional study aimed to determine which objective built environmental factors, identified using a virtual neighbourhood audit, were associated with cycling for transport in adults living in five urban regions across Europe. The moderating role of age, gender, socio-economic status and country on these associations was also investigated. Overall, results showed that people living in neighbourhoods with a preponderance of speed limits below 30 km/h, many bicycle lanes, with less traffic calming devices, more trees, more litter and many parked cars forming an obstacle on the road were more likely to cycle for transport than people living in areas with lower prevalence of these factors. Evidence was only found for seven out of 56 possible moderators of these associations. These results suggest that reducing speed limits for motorized vehicles and the provision of more bicycle lanes may be effective interventions to promote cycling in Europe.

Megjegyzések:Background Obesity-related lifestyle behaviors usually co-exist but few studies have examined their simultaneous relation with body weight. This study aimed to identify the hierarchy of lifestyle-related behaviors associated with being overweight in adults, and to examine subgroups so identified. Methods Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey conducted across 60 urban neighborhoods in 5 European urban regions between February and September 2014. Data on socio-demographics, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, eating habits, smoking, alcohol consumption, and sleep duration were collected by questionnaire. Participants also reported their weight and height. A recursive partitioning tree approach (CART) was applied to identify both main correlates of overweight and lifestyle subgroups. Results In 5295 adults, mean (SD) body mass index (BMI) was 25.2 (4.5) kg/m2, and 46.0 % were overweight (BMI ?25 kg/m2). CART analysis showed that among all lifestyle-related behaviors examined, the first identified correlate was sitting time while watching television, followed by smoking status. Different combinations of lifestyle-related behaviors (prolonged daily television viewing, former smoking, short sleep, lower vegetable consumption, and lower physical activity) were associated with a higher likelihood of being overweight, revealing 10 subgroups. Members of four subgroups with overweight prevalence >50 % were mainly males, older adults, with lower education, and living in greener neighborhoods with low residential density. Conclusion Sedentary behavior while watching television was identified as the most important correlate of being overweight. Delineating the hierarchy of correlates provides a better understanding of lifestyle-related behavior combinations which may assist in targeting preventative strategies aimed at tackling obesity.

Megjegyzések:Summary: Findings from research on the association between the built environment and obesity remain equivocal but may be partly explained by differences in approaches used to characterize the built environment. Findings obtained using subjective measures may differ substantially from those measured objectively. We investigated the agreement between perceived and objectively measured obesogenic environmental features to assess (1) the extent of agreement between individual perceptions and observable characteristics of the environment and (2)the agreement between aggregated perceptions and observable characteristics, and whether this varied by type of characteristic, region or neighbourhood. Cross-sectional data from the SPOTLIGHT project (n= 6037 participants from60 neighbourhoods in five European urban regions) were used. Residents' perceptions were self-reported, and objectively measured environmental features were obtained by a virtual audit using Google Street View. Percent agreement and Kappa statistics were calculated. The mismatch was quantified at neighbourhood level by a distance metric derived from a factor map. The extent to which the mismatch metric varied by region and neighbourhood was examined using linear regression models. Overall, agreement was moderate (agreement<82%, kappa<0.3) and varied by obesogenic environmental feature, region and neighbourhood. Highest agreement was found for food outlets and outdoor recreational facilities, and lowest agreement was obtained for aesthetics. In general, a better match was observed in high-residential density neighbourhoods characterized by a high density of food outlets and recreational facilities. Future studies should combine perceived and objectively measured built environment qualities to better understand the potential impact of the built environment on health, particularly in low residential density neighbourhoods.
