Cím:Particle verbs in computational LFGs : Issues from English, German, and Hungarian / Martin Forst, Tracy H. King, Laczkó Tibor
Dátum:2010
Megjegyzések:We present the ways in which particle verbs are implemented in two relatively mature computational grammars, the English and the German ParGram LFGs, and we address the issues that arise with respect to particle verbs in the development of a computational LFG for Hungarian. Considerations concerning the ParGram LFG implementation of productive Hungarian particle + verb combinations raise questions as to their treatment in the other two grammars. In addition to providing analyses for English, German, and Hungarian particle verbs, we use these phenomena to highlight how constraints on available lexical resources can affect the choice of analysis and how detailed implementations of related phenomena in typologically different languages can positively guide the analyses in all of the languages.

Megjegyzések:In this paper we develop an LFG analysis of the binding relations of Hungarian anaphors when they occur within possessive DPs. The reflexive is subject to the Minimal Complete Nucleus Condition, and the reciprocal is subject to the Minimal Finite Domain Condition. When either the reflexive or the reciprocal pronoun occurs within a possessive DP, neither of them can be anaphorically bound from outside if this DP contains the definite article (Rákosi 2017, to appear). Our analysis has two crucial aspects. On the one hand, we introduce a new feature: "binding domain delimiter" associated with the lexical form of the definite article. We use this feature as a negative off-path constraint in modelling the relevant binding relations. On the other hand, following Laczkó (2004, 2009), we assume that within Hungarian possessive DPs there are two [?r] grammatical functions available to arguments of complex event nominals: POSS and SUBJ. Both can be overtly realized by either the nominative or the dative possessor constituent, and, in addition, SUBJ can also be PRO. Thus, we create a DP-internal antecedent for the anaphors in a principled manner, which, in turn, can be controlled from outside the DP.

Megjegyzések:Laczkó & Rákosi (2019) analyze the binding relations of Hungarian anaphors occurring within possessive DPs. They introduce a new feature: BDD "binding domain delimiter" associated with the lexical form of the definite article. Furthermore, they assume that within Hungarian possessive DPs there are two [?r] grammatical functions available to arguments of complex event nominals: SUBJ and POSS. In this paper we will show that their analysis is on the right LFG-theoretic lines, because it handles the crucial binding facts appropriately. However, we will also demonstrate that it cannot capture some further related phenomena; therefore, we will propose an important modification of their account that will also cover these further cases. In addition to adopting their SUBJ PRO analysis of the external argument of a "transitive" derived nominal, we will subscribe to the view that the by-phrase realizing such an external argument bears the OBLag grammatical function, which is more feasible than a suppression account. Finally, we will explore the treatment of obligatory control into Hungarian DPs from an LFG perspective. We will argue for the anaphoric control approach as opposed the functional control alternative.

My general framework is the approach to Hungarian finite sentences proposed in Laczkó (2014a). I concentrate on essential c-structural, functional annotational and lexical representational issues

Dátum:2014
ISSN:1098-6782
Megjegyzések:In this paper I present the crucial aspects of an LFG (and XLEimplementable) analysis of the major types of Hungarian verbal modifiers (VMs). In accordance with the general approach outlined in Laczkó (2014a), I assume that focussed constituents, VMs and the (verb-adjacent) question phrase are in complementary distribution in [Spec,VP]. I distinguish two major types of VMs: particles (a.k.a. preverbs) belong to the first type, and the rest of VMs to the other type. On the basis of Laczkó's (2013) analysis, I treat both compositional and non-compositional PVCs lexically, with both the verb and particle having their respective lexical forms with appropriate functional annotations and cross-referencing (including the use of CHECK features). The particle and the verb are analyzed as functional coheads in both PVC types. All the other VMs, with their own grammatical functions, are lexically selected by their verbs in these verbs' lexical forms. Depending on the nature of the VM involved, the verb can impose various constraints on it.

Cím:Essentials of an LFG analysis of Hungarian finite sentences / Laczkó Tibor
Dátum:2014
Megjegyzések:In this paper I present an LFG (and XLE-implementable) analysis of the preverbal portion of Hungarian finite clauses. The structural representation is largely motivated by É. Kiss (1992) and Laczkó & Rákosi (2008-2014). I argue for S and against IP (and I also postulate CP). I employ a hierarchical, binary branching, adjunction structure for the topic field, in addition to a similar setup in the quantifier field. I handle all the question phrases other than the question phrase immediately adjacent to the verb in multiple constituent questions as occupying VP-adjoined positions in the quantifier field. I assume that focussed constituents, verbal modifiers and the (verb-adjacent) question phrase are in complementary distribution in [Spec,VP]. On the basis of the analysis proposed in this paper, I suggest that LFG's parametric space that is potentially available to c-structure?function associations should be augmented along the following lines. (i) The [Spec,VP] position should be allowed to host the FOCUS discourse function. (ii) The XP in [S XP VP] can also be a topic, in addition to a subject. (iii) A VP constituent can also contain a subject.

Megjegyzések:In this paper, I modify and augment my LFG-XLE analysis of negation in Hungarian proposed in Laczkó (2014b) by (i) developing an account of the special uses of negative particles (ii) capturing their interaction with negative polarity items (iii) presenting a formal treatment of suppletive negative variants of the copula. In addition, I argue for a particular distribution of labour in my approach for the three standard XLE devices for handling negation phenomena across languages.

Cím:On the (un)bearable lightness of being an LFG style copula in Hungarian / Laczkó Tibor
Dátum:2012
Megjegyzések:This paper develops the first comprehensive LFG analysis of the five most important types of copula constructions in Hungarian. I basically adopt Dalrymple et al.'s (2004) programmatic view, which admits diversity both in c-structure and in f-structure across and within languages, and which postulates that the "postcopular" constituent can be the functional cohead of the copula, in which case the copula itself is only a formative, it can have the open XCOMP function and it can also have the closed PREDLINK function. (This contrasts with Butt et al.'s (1999) and Attia's (2008) uniform PREDLINK approach at the f-structure level.) On the basis of the behavior of the construction types in question, I employ the functional cohead device, the PREDLINK tool (but not as the only uniform tool); however, (contrary to Dalrymple et al. (2004)) I claim that there is no need for the XCOMP treatment. At the same time, I also argue that in the case of some construction types, it is most appropriate to assume that the postcopular constituent has an OBL function.

Dátum:2011
Megjegyzések:This paper investigates the grammar of two types of spatial particles in Hungarian. We provide an analysis in the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG), which has been successfully implemented on the Xerox Linguistic Environment (XLE) platform of the Parallel Grammar international project. We propose that, in the productive cases, syntactic predicate composition of a special sort takes place via XLE's restriction operator. We treat the non-productive cases by dint of appropriate specifications in the (distinct) lexical entries of verbs and particles in combination with XLE's concatenation template.

Megjegyzések:The paper investigates the grammar of two types of inflecting spatial particles in Hungarian. We argue that the attested synchronic variation in the grammar of the particle-verb constructions discussed can directly be correlated with distinct stages of a diachronic grammaticalization path that different particles have trodden to different degrees. We provide an LFG-theoretic analysis and its XLE implementation that captures this variation qua variation in c-structure and f-structure encoding.
