Megjegyzések:The paper attempts to present the wine export of France in the 19th century based on contemporary statistical data, scientific papers and current academic literature on viticultural history. Until the phylloxera epidemic France had been the greatest producer, consumer and exporter of wine. Only around 5-10 per cent of the annual output was exported, the rest was taken in by the home market. In the first half of the 19th century export amounted to 1.1 to 1.3 million hectolitres, less than that of the late 18th century (1.5 million). There was an upturn from the 1840s and export peaked in the 1860s and early 1870s with more than 3 million hectolitres per year. Following the phylloxera and due to foreign competition (Italy, Spain, Portugal) there was a decrease to about 1.7 to 1.9 million. Despite the fall in quantity, the value of exported wine remained high, still making France a key player in the global wine market with its high quality product. This position was challenged but still not compromised in the last quarter of the 19th century. Due to the cultural tradition of wine consumption in French society, when the wine stock for the home market was exhausted, import wines were consumed as well. The result was that from the 1880s, due to the downturn in national production, France became momentarily Europe's greatest wine importer.
