Megjegyzések:In this study, we aim to investigate how the functional properties of microalgae help to delineate the major groups of aquatic habitats. Using functional trait-based and Reynolds' functional group-based approaches similarities of the microalgal flora of all aquatic habitats occurring in Hungary were compared. The habitats covered the whole size spectrum of standing waters (10-2-108m2) and water currents (watershed: 102-1011m2), , limnological and chemical properties. Both functional trait-based and functional group-based habitat classifications overrode the hydromorphology-based typology, however, functional group-based clusters showed closer resemblance to limnological-hydromorphological types than clusters created by trait-based approaches both for qualitative and quantitative data. Most of the aquatic habitats that have similar limnological characteristics showed resemblance in the functional properties of their microflora. Rivers and river-related habitats were the most diverse functionally. These were followed by standing waters with extended macrophyte coverage. The small, unique habitats displayed the lowest functional richness. The occurrence of several functional groups in some extreme habitats implies two alternative explanations: first, the habitat template of the groups is wider than defined in the original description; second, detailed information on the autecology of species assigned to a functional group necessitates the creation of new groups specific for the unique habitats.

Megjegyzések:The functional group (FG) concept suggests that species having different phylogenetic origins but possessing similar functional characteristics can be considered as functional groups and these co-occur in the phytoplankton. Here, we study how functional redundancy of phytoplankton taxa (within group richness) contribute to the species diversity of assemblages in an oxbow lake in the Carpathian Basin. We found that although the observed functional redundancy was similar among several FGs, the shape of the species accumulation curves of these groups was considerably different, implying that the observed species numbers alone do not represent the real functional redundancy of the groups. We demonstrated that FGs that showed asymptotes in species richness estimates in small spatial scale, exhibited steady increase in large spatial, and temporal scales. The contribution of FGs to species richness depended strongly on the relative biomass of each FG. Species accumulation curves of those groups of which elements dominated in the phytoplankton, appeared to be approaching asymptotes. Since the shapes of species accumulation curves refer to the strengths of within-group competition among constituent species, our results imply that functional redundancy of phytoplankton is influenced by the role that the elements play within the assemblages.

Megjegyzések:Distribution of algae was studied in a series of water bodies ranging from 10?2 to ~109 m2 in the lowland region of the Carpathian basin in a late summer period. It has been demonstrated that lake size has pronounced impact on the morphological and chemical properties of the water bodies, and acting through these variables it shapes the distribution of the various algal groups in the water bodies of different sizes. Changes of the relative abundance of the various algal groups along the spatial scale showed four apparently distinct patterns. We found increasing relative abundance of heterocytic cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates and those taxa which have no capability of active locomotion and are characterised by high sinking rate in the large water bodies. The flagellated algae (Chlamydomonas spp., euglenophytes, Synura spp.) and the tichoplanktonic elements were characteristic for small-sized water bodies. Most of the chrysophytes and several other flagellated taxa showed hump-shaped distribution along the size scale of water bodies. The group of large colonial flagellated chlorophytes, non-heterocytic filamentous cyanobacteria and filamentous chlorophytes occasionally occurred in high relative abundance both in small and large-sized water bodies. Our findings suggest that water body size has pronounced impact on the composition of algal assemblages.

Megjegyzések:Numerous oxbows of different sizes, depths and ages accompany alluvial rivers in theCarpathian basin. These water bodies provide varioushabitats for macroscopic and microscopic assemblages.Phytoplankton of 13 oxbows in the Tiszavalley was studied between 2005 and 2008. In thisarticle, we focussed on the following questions (i) dothe oxbows have unique microflora? (ii) does themacrophyte coverage have a large effect on thecomposition and biomass of the algal assemblages?and (iii) does the higher plants dominated state resultin clear-water conditions in the oxbows? The studiedoxbows were in different stages of the ageingprocess. We classified the sampled oxbows accordingto their macrophyte vegetation into five types. A totalof 646 species of algae were recorded in the oxbowsover the study period. The microflora was dominatedby cyanophytes, chlorococcalean green algae, euglenophytesand diatom species. Phytoplankton specieswere allocated into 32 coda. For the determination oftypical algal assemblages, we used Kohonen's SelfOrganizing Map (SOM) statistical analysis combinedwith K-means clustering, which has resulted fivedifferent types of phytoplankton associations. Thesetypes were dominated by coda Y, LO, W1, WS andJ. Chlorophyll a data of the sparsely and denselyvegetated oxbows did not differ, since a wide rangeof values characterised both types of the lakes. In thisstudy, the composition of the microflora is similar tothat of other eutrophic lakes, but some rarelyoccurring taxa such as Peridinium gatunense Nygaardand Peridiniopsis elpatiewskyi (Ostenf.) Bourellymight play a key role in the phytoplanktonsuccession of the oxbows. The effect of the macrophytecoverage was decisive in the composition ofthe algal assemblages, and our investigations indicatedthat, in the case of the oxbows, the macrophytedominatedstate does not necessarily result in a clearwaterstate.

Megjegyzések:In phytoplankton ecology the shape of microalgae appears predominantly as a categorical variable. Using shape-realistic 3D models of 220 microalgae we proposed and calculated six shape metrics and tested how these relate to each other and to the size of the microalgae. We found that some of the metrics are more sensitive to elongation, while others are related to multicellularity. We found a linear relationship between shape measures and the greatest axial linear dimensions of the microalgae. Our findings suggest that there is an evolutionary trade-off between the shape and size of the microalgae. It is important to stress that we found that surface area to volume ratio of the microalgae are hyperbolic functions of the length and volume for each shape. In our study, we demonstrated that the proposed shape metrics serve as suitable quantitative traits, and help to understand better how simple shapes evolved to more complex outlines.

Megjegyzések:Single-trait analyses are used to select the most appropriate species characteristics for an effective indication of changes in multiple stressors, but they are robust to detect fine-scale functional changes in biofilms. The combination of single traits may appropriately reflect ecological properties of changing benthic assemblages. We studied colonisation processes of benthic algal assemblages focusing on the changes in trait composition using life forms, type of attachments, cell size and mobility as single traits in a small lowland stream. We tested the descriptive power of single-trait groups (STGs) and also combined trait groups (CTGs). We assumed that STGs would be significantly affected by environmental factors, but compositional changes in biofilms would be described more easily by using CTGs rather than STGs. Our hypotheses were confirmed by the results. While some STGs correlated positively to environmental factors indicating disturbances, others correlated to environmental factors indicating the stable conditions. The fast settlement of large-sized groups was also relevant determining the compositional changes in the studied benthic community. Despite the strong correlation between STGs and environmental variables, CTGs analyses revealed important functional relations in the ecosystem, since CTGs display more sophisticated functional features of the organisms, which may provide more realistic responses.
