Various edge response of ground beetles in edges under natural versus anthropogenic influence : a meta-analysis using life-history traits / Tibor Magura, Gábor L. Lövei, Béla Tóthmérész

Megjegyzések:
Edges are on the increase world-wide due to increasing fragmentation and loss of natural habitats. After formation, edges are maintained by various processes (natural vs. continued anthropogenic interventions: forestry, agriculture, urbanization) which influence the reaction of individual species to edge effects (history-based edge effect hypothesis), and this will be reflected in the diversity of assemblages. Diversity, however, is not the most appropriate indicator of the edge effect because species with different traits may respond differently to the edges. To further articulate the history-based edge effect hypothesis, we evaluated the edge effect on one of the most commonly used life-history traits, the feeding habit of ground beetles in forest edges. A meta-analysis based on 28 publications and 422 comparisons showed that natural vs. continued anthropogenic interventions as edge-maintaining processes reflected at the trait level. Abundance of herbivorous, omnivorous, and predatory ground beetle species were all higher in the natural edges than in the forest interiors, while no similar pattern occurred in edges with continued anthropogenic influence. These results suggest that structural and environmental changes at edges sustained by repeated anthropogenic influence adversely influencing ecosystem functions, with negative effects on ecosystem services like pest or weed control.

Conversion from environmental filtering to randomness as assembly rule of ground beetle assemblages along an urbanization gradient / Magura Tibor, Lövei L. Gábor, Tóthmérész Béla
Dátum:
2018
ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
Urbanization fragments, isolates or eliminates natural habitats, and changes the structure and composition of assemblages living in the remaining natural fragments. Knowing assembly rules is necessary to support and/or maintain biodiversity in urban habitats. We hypothesized that forest communities in rural sites are organized by environmental filtering, but this may be changed by urbanization, and in the suburban and urban forest fragments replaced by randomly organized assemblages, influenced by the colonization of species from the surrounding matrix. Evaluating simultaneously the functional and phylogenetic relationships of co-existing species, we showed that at the rural sites, co-existing ground beetle species were functionally and phylogenetically more similar than expected by chance, indicating that environmental filtering was the likely process structuring these communities. Contrary to this, in urban and suburban sites, the co-occurring species were functionally and phylogenetically not different from the null model, indicating randomly structured assemblages. According to our findings, changes in environmental and habitat characteristics accompanied by urbanization lead to assemblages of randomly colonized species from the surrounding matrix, threatening proper ecosystem functioning. To reassemble stochastically assembled species of urban and suburban fragments to structured, properly functioning communities, appropriate management strategies are needed which simultaneously consider recreational, economic and conservation criteria.

Megjegyzések:
Most edges are anthropogenic in origin, but are distinguishable by their maintaining processes (natural vs. continued anthropogenic interventions: forestry, agriculture, urbanization). We hypothesized that the dissimilar edge histories will be reflected in the diversity and assemblage composition of inhabitants. Testing this "history-based edge effect" hypothesis, we evaluated published information on a common insect group, ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in forest edges. A meta-analysis showed that the diversity-enhancing properties of edges significantly differed according to their history. Forest edges maintained by natural processes had significantly higher speciesrichness than their interiors, while edges with continued anthropogenic influence did not. The filter function of edges was also essentially different depending on their history. For forest specialist species, edges maintained by natural processes were penetrable, allowing these species to move right through the edges, while edges still under anthropogenic interventions were impenetrable, preventing the dispersal of forest specialists out of the forest. For species inhabiting the surrounding matrix (open-habitat and generalist species), edges created by forestry activities were penetrable, and such species also invaded the forest interior. However, natural forest edges constituted a barrier and prevented the invasion of matrix species into the forest interior. Preserving and protecting all edges maintained by natural processes, and preventing anthropogenic changes to their structure, composition, and characteristics are key factors to sustain biodiversity in forests. Moreover, the increasing presence of anthropogenic edges in a landscape is to be avoided, as they contribute to the loss of biodiversity. Simultaneously, edges under continued anthropogenic disturbance should be restored by increasing habitat heterogeneity.

Does urbanization decrease diversity in ground beetle (Carabidae) assemblages? / Tibor Magura, Gábor L. Lövei, Béla Tóthmérész
Dátum:
2010
Megjegyzések:
Aim We wanted to test whether urbanization has similar effects on biodiversity indifferent locations, comparing the responses of ground beetle (Coleoptera, Carabidae)assemblages with an urbanization gradient. We also wanted to see if urbanizationhad a homogenizing effect on ground beetle assemblages.Locations Nine forested temperate locations in Europe, Canada and Japan. Methods Published results of the Globenet Project were used. At all locations, three stages were identified: (1) a forested (rural) area, (2) a suburban area wherethe original forest was fragmented and isolated, and (3) remnants of the originalforest in urban parks. These habitats formed an urbanization series. Study arrangements(number and operation of traps) and methods (pitfall trapping) were identical, conforming to the Globenet protocol. Assemblage composition and diversitypatterns were evaluated.Diversity relationships were analysed by the Rényi diversityordering method considering all ground beetles and ? separately ? the forest specialistspecies. Taxonomic homogenization was examined by multivariate methodsusing assemblage similarities. Results Overall biodiversity (compared by species richness and diversity ordering)showed inconsistent trends by either urbanization intensity or by geographicposition. However, when only forest species were compared, diversity was higher inthe original rural (forested) areas than in urban forest fragments.Within-countrysimilarities of carabid assemblages were always higher than within-urbanizationstage similarities.Main conclusions Urbanization does not appear to cause a decrease in groundbeetle diversity per se. Forest species decline as urbanization intensifies but thistrend is masked by an influx of non-forest species. The rural faunas were moresimilar to the urban ones within the same location than similar urbanization stageswere to each other, indicating that urbanization did not homogenize the taxonomiccomposition of ground beetle faunas across the studied locations.

Time-consistent rearrangement of carabid beetle assemblages by an urbanisation gradient in Hungary / Tibor Magura, Gábor L. Lővei, Béla Tóthmérész
Dátum:
2008
Megjegyzések:
To examine the impact of urbanisation on arthropod biodiversity, carabid (Coleoptera: Carabidae) assemblages were studied over 2 years along a rural-urban gradient representing increasing levels of human disturbance. Carabids were collected by pitfall trapping during their whole activity period in lowland oak forest patches in and near the city of Debrecen, Eastern Hungary, over two seasons (2001?2002). Carabid activity density was significantly higher in the rural than in the two other areas, but there was no significant difference in species richness (measured as mean number of species caught/trap). The proportion of forest specialists significantly decreased from the rural towards the urban area, and the proportion of forest specialist species was significantly higher in the rural and suburban areas than in the urban one. In contrast, the relative activity density of generalist species significantly increased along the rural?urban gradient. Both the relative number of openhabitat species and their activity density were significantly higher in the urban forest fragments than in the suburban and rural ones. The patterns found were consistent between the 2 years. Multidimensional scaling indicated pronounced changes in species composition along the gradient; the assemblages in urban forest fragments were more variable than in the other areas. A large proportion of the variation in overall activity density, species richness and the proportion of carabids with different habitat affinities could be explained by structural habitat variables (percentage cover by canopy, leaf litter, herbs and decaying wood), and prey availability.
