Megjegyzések:The complex mechanism of the carbocationic rearrangements leading to a variety of olefin (exo-, endo-, tri-, and tetra-substituted) end groups in the cationic polymerization of isobutylene (IB) catalyzed by ethylaluminum dichloride (EtAlCl(2)) in nonpolar solvents in the temperature range of -40 to 25 degrees C was studied by model ionization experiments employing poly(isobutylene chloride) (PIB-Cl) of low molecular weight (M(n) similar to 1000-2000) obtained by living cationic polymerization. Ionizations were performed with EtAlCl(2) in hydrocarbon media to mimic a conventional cationic polymerization of IB, but in the presence of a proton trap to suppress reprotonation of the first formed olefin and subsequent decomposition of the resulting PIB cation. In the absence of a proton trap, ionization of PIB-Cl resulted in about 70% of tri-substituted olefin end groups in the studied temperature range. The exo and endo olefin end-group content was negligible. MALDI and APPI TOP MS indicated that the tri-substituted PIB olefins contained irregular carbon numbers, suggesting chain scission. Ionizations carried out in the presence of the proton trap 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine (DTBP) at 0 and -40 degrees C also gave mainly the tri-substituted olefin; however, at 25 degrees C only exo-, endo-, and tetra-substituted olefins were formed with regular carbon numbers. Ionization of PIB(d8)(IB)(n)-Cl with n = 1-6 showed that on average 4 IB units are cleaved at -40 degrees C, which suggests that the tri-substituted olefins are formed by backbiting via hydride transfer followed by chain scission. A mechanism is proposed to account for the olefin structures involving a sterically hindered cation arising via hydride and methyde shifts, which either eliminates a proton to yield the tetra-substituted olefin or undergoes a distant hydride shift by backbiting followed by a methyde shift and chain scission to yield the tri-substituted olefin of irregular carbon number.

Dátum:1999
ISSN:0024-9297
Megjegyzések:Characterization of polyisobutylene (PIB)?polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) multiblock copolymers by thermally stimulated discharge (TSD) current and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) methods is described. Both the length of the PIB segments (2200?10000 g/mol), and the overall composition (30?80 wt %) of the multiblock copolymers were varied. Both methods support the block structure of the multiblock copolymers investigated. Despite the apolar nature of the PIB segments, they proved to be detectable by the TSD method. The relaxation times and the mobility of the chain length were also determined.

Megjegyzések:The evaluation of complex mass spectra requires effective data processing and visualization methods. The recently invented data mining procedure, the mass-remainder analysis (MARA), was further developed for use in the mass spectrometry of polymer blends containing copolymers. MARA is based on the calculation of the mass remainder after dividing by the exact mass of a base unit, e.g., the repeat unit of a polymer. Our improved method, the multistep mass-remainder analysis (M-MARA), performs sequential calculations of the remainders. The keys of the method are the selection of the base units and visualization by MR3 versus m/z and/or MR2 versus MR1 plots, where MR, is the mass remainder of the ith step. The proposed method eliminates the periodicities present in a complex system and therefore provides highly simplified plots. The effectiveness of the M-MARA method was demonstrated by the analysis of polylactide/polycaprolactone and various ethylene oxide/propylene oxide copolymer samples.

Megjegyzések:The data processing and visualization methods are of paramount importance in the mass spectrometry of copolymers. To determine the copolymer composition, in this article, a robust algorithm is proposed for the compositional assignment and for the estimation of the relative abundance of each species present in copolymer mass spectra. Our homemade software enables the accurate calculation of the compositional drift, i.e., the variation of copolymer composition with the polymer chain lengths. Furthermore, we introduce a novel copolymer quantity, namely, the polydispersity (also called as dispersity) ratio (PDR) of the comonomers, and establish a characteristic relationship between the shape of the composition drift curves and the PDR values. This relation allows, for instance, a quick visual recognition of the presence of diblocks in a triblock copolymer by means of mass spectrometry. Our approach is demonstrated by the analysis of various poloxamers, i.e., polyethylene oxide (PEO)-polypropylene oxide (PPO) block copolymers up to the average molecular weight of approximately 4000 g/mol. The determined number-average molecular weights and the ethylene oxide contents were also confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Dynamic light scattering experiments revealed that small variations in the copolymer composition significantly affect the properties of the copolymer.
