Megjegyzések:Polyisobutylene (PIB)-based polymer networks potentiallyuseful as smart coatings for photovoltaic devices have beendeveloped. Low molecular weight coumarin functional triarm star PIBwas synthesized via a single step SN2 reaction of bromoallyl functionaltriarm star PIB with 4-methylumbelliferone or umbelliferone in thepresence of sodium hydride. Quantitative end functionality wasconfirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flightmass spectrometry. UVA (?max = 365 nm) induced reversible photodimerizationof the coumarin moieties resulted in cross-linkedelastomeric films exhibiting self-healing behavior. The extent ofphotodimerization/photoscission was monitored by UV?vis spectroscopy. The low oxygen (1.9 ? 10?16 mol m m?2 s?1Pa?1) and moisture (46 ? 10?16 mol m m?2 s?1 Pa?1) permeability of the cross-linked polymer films suggest excellent barrierproperties of the cross-linked polymer films. The self-healing process was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). For this, mechanical cuts were introduced in the cross-linked PIB films through micromachining with an AFM tip and the rate of healinginduced by UV, sunlight, or both was followed by taking AFM images of the film at different time intervals during the repairprocess

Cím:Mechanism of Isomerization in the Cationic Polymerization of Isobutylene / Philip Dimitrov, Jack Emert, Jun Hua, Sandor Keki, Rudolf Faust
Dátum:2011
ISSN:0024-9297
Megjegyzések:The complex mechanism of the carbocationic rearrangements leading to a variety of olefin (exo-, endo-, tri-, and tetra-substituted) end groups in the cationic polymerization of isobutylene (IB) catalyzed by ethylaluminum dichloride (EtAlCl(2)) in nonpolar solvents in the temperature range of -40 to 25 degrees C was studied by model ionization experiments employing poly(isobutylene chloride) (PIB-Cl) of low molecular weight (M(n) similar to 1000-2000) obtained by living cationic polymerization. Ionizations were performed with EtAlCl(2) in hydrocarbon media to mimic a conventional cationic polymerization of IB, but in the presence of a proton trap to suppress reprotonation of the first formed olefin and subsequent decomposition of the resulting PIB cation. In the absence of a proton trap, ionization of PIB-Cl resulted in about 70% of tri-substituted olefin end groups in the studied temperature range. The exo and endo olefin end-group content was negligible. MALDI and APPI TOP MS indicated that the tri-substituted PIB olefins contained irregular carbon numbers, suggesting chain scission. Ionizations carried out in the presence of the proton trap 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine (DTBP) at 0 and -40 degrees C also gave mainly the tri-substituted olefin; however, at 25 degrees C only exo-, endo-, and tetra-substituted olefins were formed with regular carbon numbers. Ionization of PIB(d8)(IB)(n)-Cl with n = 1-6 showed that on average 4 IB units are cleaved at -40 degrees C, which suggests that the tri-substituted olefins are formed by backbiting via hydride transfer followed by chain scission. A mechanism is proposed to account for the olefin structures involving a sterically hindered cation arising via hydride and methyde shifts, which either eliminates a proton to yield the tetra-substituted olefin or undergoes a distant hydride shift by backbiting followed by a methyde shift and chain scission to yield the tri-substituted olefin of irregular carbon number.

Cím:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-based amphiphilic copolymer aggregates as drug carrying nanoparticles / Miklós Nagy, László Szőllősi, Sándor Kéki, Rudolf Faust, Miklós Zsuga
Dátum:2009
Megjegyzések:A series of amphiphilic polyisobutylene-block-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PIB-b-PVA) copolymers of constant PIB and varying PVA block length was synthesized by living carbocationic polymerization and their solvent state behavior was studied. The synthesis involved a two-step process, namely the preparation of polyisobutylene-b-poly(tert butyl vinyl ether) and its hydrolysis with hydrogen bromide. The copolymers formed were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, 1H-NMR, and MALDI-TOF MS methods. The self-assembly behavior of the copolymers was investigated in aqueous media by direct dissolution and dialysis using light scattering methods. The critical micelle concentration, micelle size, aggregation number, and micelle shape were determined. The ability of the aggregates as drug carrying nanodevices was also investigated by doping them with indomethacin. UV-Vis measurements showed that the solubility of indomethacine increased significantly, even with a tenfold increase being found in one case. Our findings suggest that the solubility is largely dependent upon the segment ratios of the blocks.

Dátum:2005
ISSN:0969-806X
Megjegyzések:The free volume was studied in different poly(isobutylene)/poly(methyl vinyl ether) diblock copolymers by positron annihilation spectroscopy. The degree of polymerization of both constituents was varied in the work. The addition of further monomer units was found to increase the size of free volume holes continuously. However, the observed effect was much smaller than the size of monomer units. According to Doppler-broadening measurements, the structure of blocks changes with their size.

Cím:Effect of Architecture on the Micellar Properties of Amphiphilic Block Copolymers: Comparison of AB Linear Diblock, A2B2, A3B3, and (AB)3 Star Block Copolymers / Jongpil Yun, Rudolf Faust, László Sz. Szilágyi, Sándor Kéki, Miklós Zsuga
Dátum:2004
ISSN:1060-1325
Megjegyzések:The influence of architecture on aqueous micellar properties of amphiphilic block copolymers AB-1,A2B2, A3B3, and (AB)3 (A ? polyisobutylene (PIB), B ? poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PMeVE)), with approximately constant A and B segment lengths, was investigated. A comparison of AB-1 with AB-2 and AB-3 diblock copolymers having similar composition but higher total molecular weight suggested spherical core-shell morphology for AB-3 and vesicles for AB-1 and AB-2. Similarly to AB-1, star block copolymers A2B2, A3B3, and (AB)3 also formed vesicles with unusually high aggregation number (Nagg) and hydrodynamic radius (Rh). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) measured by fluorescence spectroscopy at 208C increased in the order (AB)3 ? AB-1 , A2B2 A3B3. The temperature dependence of Rh and Nagg has been determined in the temperature range of 20?308C. Rh and Nagg remained
