Dátum:2023
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:The first search for nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs (HH) with one H decaying into four leptons and the other into a pair of b quarks is presented, using proton-proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13TeV by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1). A 95% confidence level upper limit of 32.4 is set on the signal strength modifier mu, defined as the ratio of the observed HH production rate in the HH -> ZZ* b (b) over bar -> 4 lb (b) over bar decay channel to the standard model (SM) expectation. Possible modifications of the H trilinear coupling lambda(HHH) with respect to the SM value are investigated. The coupling modifier kappa(lambda), defined as lambda(HHH) divided by its SM prediction, is constrained to be within the observed (expected) range -8.8 (-9.8) < kappa(lambda) < 13.4 (15.0) at 95% confidence level.

Cím:Search for heavy resonances and quantum black holes in e[mu], e[tau], and [mu][tau] final states in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / The CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:A search is reported for heavy resonances and quantum black holes decaying into e mu, e tau, and mu tau final states in proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016-2018 at root s = 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1). The e mu, e tau, and mu tau invariant mass spectra are reconstructed, and no evidence is found for physics beyond the standard model. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for lepton flavor violating signals. Three benchmark signals are studied: resonant tau sneutrino production in R parity violating supersymmetric models, heavy Z' gauge bosons with lepton flavor violating decays, and nonresonant quantum black hole production in models with extra spatial dimensions. Resonant tau sneutrinos are excluded for masses up to 4.2TeV in the e mu channel, 3.7TeV in the e tau channel, and 3.6TeV in the mu tau channel. A Z' boson with lepton flavor violating couplings is excluded up to a mass of 5.0TeV in the e mu channel, up to 4.3Te V in the e tau channel, and up to 4.1TeV in the mu tau channel. Quantum black holes in the benchmark model are excluded up to the threshold mass of 5.6TeV in the e mu channel, 5.2Te V in the e tau channel, and 5.0TeV in the mu tau channel. In addition, model-independent limits are extracted to allow comparisons with other models for the same final states and similar event selection requirements. The results of these searches provide the most stringent limits available from collider experiments for heavy particles that undergo lepton flavor violating decays.

Cím:Search for top squarks in the four-body decay mode with single lepton final states in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / The CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:A search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark, the top squark ((t) over tilde (1)), is presented. The search targets the four-body decay of the (t) over tilde (1), which is preferred when the mass difference between the top squark and the lightest supersymmetric particle is smaller than the mass of the W boson. This decay mode consists of a bottom quark, two other fermions, and the lightest neutralino ( (x) over tilde (0)(1)), which is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events are selected using the presence of a high-momentum jet, an electron or muon with low transverse momentum, and a significant missing transverse momentum. The signal is selected based on a multivariate approach that is optimized for the difference between m( (t) over tilde (1)) and m( (x) over tilde (0)(1)). The contribution from leading background processes is estimated from data. No significant excess is observed above the expectation from standard model processes. The results of this search exclude top squarks at 95% confidence level for masses up to 480 and 700 GeV for m( (t) over tilde (1))- m( (x) over tilde (0)(1)) = 10 and 80 GeV, respectively.

Cím:Search for long-lived particles decaying to a pair of muons in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / The CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:An inclusive search for long-lived exotic particles decaying to a pair of muons is presented. The search uses data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV in 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 97.6 fb(-1). The experimental signature is a pair of oppositely charged muons originating from a common secondary vertex spatially separated from the pp interaction point by distances ranging from several hundred mu m to several meters. The results are interpreted in the frameworks of the hidden Abelian Higgs model, in which the Higgs boson decays to a pair of long-lived dark photons Z(D), and of a simplified model, in which long-lived particles are produced in decays of an exotic heavy neutral scalar boson. For the hidden Abelian Higgs model with m(Z(D)) greater than 20 GeV and less than half the mass of the Higgs boson, they provide the best limits to date on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to dark photons for c tau(Z(D)) (varying with m(Z(D))) between 0.03 and approximate to 0.5 mm, and above approximate to 0.5 m. Our results also yield the best constraints on long-lived particles with masses larger than 10 GeV produced in decays of an exotic scalar boson heavier than the Higgs boson and decaying to a pair of muons.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:A search for the electroweak production of a vector-like quark T·, decaying to a top quark and a Higgs boson is presented. The search is based on a sample of proton-proton collision events recorded at the LHC at = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb?1. This is the first T· search that exploits the Higgs boson decay to a pair of photons. For narrow isospin singlet T· states with masses up to 1.1 TeV, the excellent diphoton invariant mass resolution of 1?2% results in an increased sensitivity compared to previous searches based on the same production mechanism. The electroweak production of a T· quark with mass up to 960 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a coupling strength ?T = 0.25 and a relative decay width ?/MT· < 5%.

ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:The top-antitop quark (tt) production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at ?s = 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.3 fb -1. The measurement is performed by analysing events with a pair of electrons or muons, or one electron and one muon, and at least two jets, one of which is identified as originating from hadronisation of a bottom quark. The measured cross section is 239 ? 2 (stat.) ? 11 (syst.) ? 6 (lum.) pb, for an assumed top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV, in agreement with the prediction of the standard model.

Cím:Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / The CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2021
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.

Cím:Study of Z boson plus jets events using variables sensitive to double-parton scattering in pp collisions at 13 TeV / The CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2021
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:Double-parton scattering is investigated using events with a Z boson and jets. The Z boson is reconstructed using only the dimuon channel. The measurements are performed with proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at root s = 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1) collected in the year 2016. Differential cross sections of Z+ >= 1 jet and Z+ >= 2 jets are measured with transverse momentum of the jets above 20 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.4. Several distributions with sensitivity to double-parton scattering effects are measured as functions of the angle and the transverse momentum imbalance between the Z boson and the jets. The measured distributions are compared with predictions from several event generators with different hadronization models and different parameter settings for multiparton interactions. The measured distributions show a dependence on the hadronization and multiparton interaction simulation parameters, and are important input for future improvements of the simulations.

Dátum:2021
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:The cross section for W or Z boson production in association with two photons is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The W -> l nu and Z -> ll decay modes (where l = e, mu) are used to extract the W gamma gamma and Z gamma gamma cross sections in a phase space defined by electron (muon) with transverse momentum larger than 30 GeV and photon transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV. All leptons and photons are required to have absolute pseudorapidity smaller than 2.5. The measured cross sections in this phase space are sigma(W gamma gamma) = 13.6(-1.9)(+1.9) (stat)(-4.0)(+4.0) (syst) +/- 0.08 (PDF + scale) fb and sigma(Z gamma gamma) = 5.41(-0.55)(+0.58) (stat)(-0.70)(+0.64) (syst) +/- 0.06 (PDF + scale) fb. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set in the framework of an effective field theory with dimension-8 operators.

Dátum:2021
ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:A search for electroweak production of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles in final states with one lepton, a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected using the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The observed yields are consistent with backgrounds expected from the standard model. The results are interpreted in the context of a simplified SUSY model of chargino-neutralino production, with the chargino decaying to a W boson and the lightest SUSY particle (LSP) and the neutralino decaying to a Higgs boson and the LSP. Charginos and neutralinos with masses up to 820 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level when the LSP mass is small, and LSPs with mass up to 350 GeV are excluded when the masses of the chargino and neutralino are approximately 700 GeV.

ISSN:1126-6708 1029-8479
Megjegyzések:A search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) in the final state with a hadronically decaying tau lepton and a neutrino is presented. This analysis is based on data recorded by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb ?1. The transverse mass spectrum is analyzed for the presence of new physics. No significant deviation from the SM prediction is observed. Limits are set on the production cross section of a W· boson decaying into a tau lepton and a neutrino. Lower limits are set on the mass of the sequential SM-like heavy charged vector boson and the mass of a quantum black hole. Upper limits are placed on the couplings of a new boson to the SM fermions. Constraints are put on a nonuniversal gauge interaction model and an effective field theory model. For the first time, upper limits on the cross section of t-channel leptoquark (LQ) exchange are presented. These limits are translated into exclusion limits on the LQ mass and on its coupling in the t-channel. The sensitivity of this analysis extends into the parameter space of LQ models that attempt to explain the anomalies observed in B meson decays. The limits presented for the various interpretations are the most stringent to date. Additionally, a model-independent limit is provided.
