Megjegyzések:A search for vectorlike leptons in multilepton final states is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 and 2017. Events are categorized by the multiplicity of electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying [tau] leptons. The missing transverse momentum and the scalar sum of the lepton transverse momenta are used to distinguish the signal from background. The observed results are consistent with the expectations from the standard model hypothesis. The existence of a vectorlike lepton doublet, coupling to the third-generation standard model leptons in the mass range of 120-790 GeV, is excluded at 95% confidence level. These are the most stringent limits yet on the production of a vectorlike lepton doublet, coupling to the third-generation standard model leptons.

Cím:First measurement of the forward rapidity gap distribution in p Pb collisions at root{S_NN}=8.16 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:For the first time at LHC energies, the forward rapidity gap spectra from proton-lead collisions for both proton and lead dissociation processes are presented. The analysis is performed over 10.4 units of pseudorapidity at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root{S_NN}=8.16 TeV, almost 300 times higher than in previous measurements of diffractive production in proton-nucleus collisions. For lead dissociation processes, which correspond to the pomeron-lead event topology, the EPOS-LHC generator predictions are a factor of 2 below the data, but the model gives a reasonable description of the rapidity gap spectrum shape. For the pomeron-proton topology, the EPOS-LHC, QGSJET II, and HIJING predictions are all at least a factor of 5 lower than the data. The latter effect might be explained by a significant contribution of ultraperipheral photoproduction events mimicking the signature of diffractive processes. These data may be of significant help in understanding the high energy limit of quantum chromodynamics and for modeling cosmic ray air showers.

Cím:Search for direct pair production of supersymmetric partners of [tau] leptons in the final state with two hadronically decaying [tau] leptons and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search for the direct production of a pair of [tau] sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of [tau] leptons, is presented. Each [tau] slepton is assumed to decay to a [tau] lepton and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), which is assumed to be stable and to not interact in the detector, leading to an imbalance in the total reconstructed transverse momentum. The search is carried out in events identified as containing two [tau] leptons, each decaying to one or more hadrons and a neutrino, and significant transverse momentum imbalance. In addition to scenarios in which the [tau] sleptons decay promptly, the search also addresses scenarios in which the [tau] sleptons have sufficiently long lifetimes to give rise to nonprompt [tau] leptons. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector in 2016-2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1}. No significant excess is seen with respect to standard model expectations. Upper limits on cross sections for the pair production of [tau] sleptons are obtained in the framework of simplified models. In a scenario in which the [tau] sleptons are superpartners of left-handed [tau] leptons, and each undergoes a prompt decay to a [tau] lepton and a nearly massless LSP, [tau] slepton masses between 115 and 340 GeV are excluded. In a scenario in which the lifetime of the [tau] sleptons corresponds to c[tau]_0 = 0.1 mm, where [tau]_0 represents the mean proper lifetime of the [tau] slepton, masses between 150 and 220 GeV are excluded.

Cím:Search for narrow resonances in the b-tagged dijet mass spectrum in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A search is performed for narrow resonances decaying to final states of two jets, with at least one jet originating from a b quark, in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb^{-1} collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Jets originating from energetic b hadrons are identified through a b-tagging algorithm that utilizes a deep neural network or the presence of a muon inside a jet. The invariant mass spectrum of jet pairs is well described by a smooth parametrization and no evidence for the production of new particles is observed. Upper limits on the production cross section are set for excited b quarks and other resonances decaying to dijet final states containing b quarks. These limits exclude at 95% confidence level models of Z' bosons with masses from 1.8 TeV to 2.4 TeV and of excited b quarks with masses from 1.8 TeV to 4.0 TeV. This is the most stringent exclusion of excited b quarks to date.

Cím:Measurement of the electroweak production of W[gamma] in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at root{s}=13 TeV / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A measurement is presented for the electroweak production of a W boson, a photon ([gamma]), and two jets (j) in proton-proton collisions. The leptonic decay of the W boson is selected by requiring one identified electron or muon and large missing transverse momentum. The two jets are required to have large invariant dijet mass and large separation in pseudorapidity. The measurement is performed with the data collected by the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb[sup{-1}]. The cross section for the electroweak W[gamma]jj production is 23.5[sup{+4.9}][sub{-4.7}], whereas the total cross section for W[gamma]jj production is 113+/-13 fb. Differential cross sections are also measured with the distributions unfolded to the particle level. All results are in agreement with the standard model expectations. Constraints are placed on anomalous quartic gauge couplings (aQGCs) in terms of dimension-8 effective field theory operators. These are the most stringent limits to date on the aQGCs parameters f[sub{M,2-5}]/[Lambda][sup{4}] and f[sub{T,6-7}]/[Lambda][sup{4}].

Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A study of anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions is presented. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of pp collisions at the LHC of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1. The study uses Higgs boson candidates produced mainly in gluon fusion or electroweak vector boson fusion at the LHC that subsequently decay to a pair of z leptons. Matrix-element and machine-learning techniques were employed in a search for anomalous interactions. The results are combined with those from the four-lepton and two-photon decay channels to yield the most stringent constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to date. The pure CP-odd scenario of the Higgs boson coupling to gluons is excluded at 2.4 standard deviations. The results are consistent with the standard model predictions.

Cím:Search for new physics using effective field theory in 13 TeV pp collision events that contain a top quark pair and a boosted Z or Higgs boson / A. Tumasyan, CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A data sample containing top quark pairs (tt over bar ) produced in association with a Lorentz-boosted Z or Higgs boson is used to search for signs of new physics using effective field theory. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions produced at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC and collected by the CMS experiment. Selected events contain a single lepton and hadronic jets, including two identified with the decay of bottom quarks, plus an additional large-radius jet with high transverse momentum identified as a Z or Higgs boson decaying to a bottom quark pair. Machine learning techniques are employed to discriminate between tt over bar Z or tt over bar H events and events from background processes, which are dominated by tt over bar + jets production. No indications of new physics are observed. The signal strengths of boosted tt over bar Z and tt over bar H production are measured, and upper limits are placed on the tt over bar Z and tt over bar H differential cross sections as functions of the Z or Higgs boson transverse momentum. The effects of new physics are probed using a framework in which the standard model is considered to be the low-energy effective field theory of a higher energy scale theory. Eight possible dimension-six operators are added to the standard model Lagrangian, and their corresponding coefficients are constrained via fits to the data.

Megjegyzések:A measurement is presented of the production of Formula Presented bosons that decay into two electrons or muons in association with jets, in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were recorded by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of Formula Presented. The differential cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum (Formula Presented) of the Formula Presented boson and the transverse momentum and rapidities of the five jets with largest Formula Presented. The jet multiplicity distribution is measured for up to eight jets. The hadronic activity in the events is estimated using the scalar sum of the Formula Presented of all the jets. All measurements are unfolded to the stable-particle level and compared with predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators, as well as with expectations at leading and next-to-leading orders in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Cím:Reconstruction of decays to merged photons using end-to-end deep learning with domain continuation in the CMS detector / CMS Collaboration
Dátum:2023
ISSN:2470-0010 2470-0029
Megjegyzések:A novel technique based on machine learning is introduced to reconstruct the decays of highly Lorentz-boosted particles. Using an end-to-end deep learning strategy, the technique bypasses existing rule-based particle reconstruction methods typically used in high energy physics analyses. It uses minimally processed detector data as input and directly outputs particle properties of interest. The new technique is demonstrated for the reconstruction of the invariant mass of particles decaying in the CMS detector. The decay of a hypothetical scalar particle Formula Presented into two photons, Formula Presented, is chosen as a benchmark decay. Lorentz boosts Formula Presented are considered, ranging from regimes where both photons are resolved to those where the photons are closely merged as one object. A training method using domain continuation is introduced, enabling the invariant mass reconstruction of unresolved photon pairs in a novel way. The new technique is validated using Formula Presented decays in LHC collision data.
