Megjegyzések:In the Eastern part of the United Sates the Appalachian dulcimer was a basic musical instrument that was thought to have been invented in the Appalachian Mountains. Since the 1940s the origin of this zither has been investigated and due to exemplary fi eldwork and scrutiny of archival sources it has been pointed out that the musical instrument was brought to the U.S. by German settlers in the second half of the 18th century. After a number of innovations (e. g. teardrop shape in Virginia, hourglass shape in West-Virginia and North-Carolina, oval shape in Galax, Virginia, rectangular shape in Tennessee etc.) zither became a typical American folk instrument. Its spread in Eastern Europe could take place directly or indirectly (under Czech, Moravian, Slovak influence)
