Cím:Simple command-line open-source software to analyse behavioural observation video recordings / Miklós Bán, Mihály Földvári, Melinda Babits, Zoltán Barta
Dátum:2017
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:Video techniques are broadly used in the field of behaviour sciences, thus there is an increasing interest in softwares that simplify the processing of recordings. One of the difficulties is that observed objects can exhibit a wide variety of behaviours that cannot usually be recognized and recorded automatically, therefore the video has to be watched and analysed manually by humans. We have developed a simple, open-source and free command-line video analysis software, that helps the processing of observation sessions from recordings and helps to verify the processed events.

Cím:Spatio-temporal structure and reproductive success in a Rook (Corvus frugilegus) colony / Feró Orsolya, Bán Miklós, Barta Zoltán
Dátum:2019
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:We have studied how individual decisions about timing of breeding and nest location affected the reproductive success of rooks by tracing the formation of a rook breeding colony in Hortobágy NP (Hungary), during the breeding season in 1999. We have found that birds who built nests earlier also laid eggs earlier and had larger clutch size but had no more offspring than late nesters. Distance of the nest from the centre or edge of the colony did not affect the reproductive success though rooks generally settled closer to the centre and further from the edge than it can be expected by assuming random distribution. The colony showed high breeding synchrony since date of egg laying varied less than date of nesting but synchrony did not influence the breeding success. Hatchling's survival rate and number of offspring increased with local nest density and rooks clustered their nests more than it can be expected by random settlement. Nest sites of early and late nesters did not differ regarding the distance from the centre or the edge of the colony but late nesters chose nest sites in more densely populated regions. The results indicate that individuals may follow different strategies to increase their reproductive success. It is prospectively advantageous to build the nest and lay eggs earlier, in turn, it's worth nesting in already more densely nested areas for late beginners. We suggest that a game theoretical approach may be useful if we try to understand the adaptive significance of colonial breeding.

Cím:Intersexual size and plumage differences in tree sparrows (Passer montanus) : a morphological study based on molecular sex determination / F. Mónus, K. Szabó, A. Lózsa, Z. Pénzes, Z. Barta
Dátum:2011
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:We investigated intersexual morphological differences in tree sparrows (Passer montanus), a species being considered as sexually monomorphic. Molecular sexing of the birds was performed by PCR amplification of the sex chromosome-linked CHD1 gene introns. All measured traits (body weight, wing, tail and tarsus length, bill size and the size of the black throat patch, i.e. badge hereafter) were greater in males than in females and the sex of about 90% of the individuals was correctly categorized by means of a discriminant analysis based on the morphological measurements. Nevertheless, wing length alone was equally good predictor of the sex. Other measured traits had only moderate discriminant value. Our results do not support that tree sparrows can be sexed based on the size of their badge alone. However, some of our results suggest intersexual differences in the function of the badge.

Cím:Repeatability analysis of egg shape in a wild tree sparrow (Passer montanus) population : a sensitive method for egg shape description / Mónus F., Barta Z.
Dátum:2005
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:The shape of avian eggs varies widely among and within species. To explore this variation, several methods for egg shape description were used in previous works. The simplest methods were unsuitable to detect small differences in shape of different eggs, while more elaborated methods required special equipment, since they were not generally used. In this study we present a simple method for egg shape description which incorporate quickness in the field, high sensitivity to egg shape differences and furthermore require no special equipment. The method is based on a function which describe the outline of the egg in a two dimensions co-ordinate system and outline originates from field taken photographs. The method was tested on clutches of wild living Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) population. Three out of four parameters of the function were found to be repeatable in Tree Sparrows. The eggs of repetitive clutches of females were more similar considering these egg shape parameters than eggs of different females. A simple, widely used index to describe egg shape, egg shape index was found to be far less sensitive in our repeatability analyses. The method described here may be particularly suitable to investigate intraspecific variation of egg shape.

Cím:Additional polymorphic microsatellite loci for detailed population genetic studies of Lethrus apterus (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae) / Rácz Rita, Bereczki Judit, Kosztolányi András, Horváth Attila, Sziráki Szabolcs, Barta Zoltán
Dátum:2017
ISSN:1217-8837
Megjegyzések:In this study we attempted to isolate 13 additional microsatellites from the beetle Lethrus apterus and then to use them to screen for polymorphisms in 35 specimens collected from the northern Hungarian mountains. The newly developed markers presented in this paper are polymorphic, including between two and seven detected alleles per locus. The observed and expected heterozygosity per locus ranged between 0.057 and 0.686 and between 0.056 and 0.756, respectively, while two loci showed significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These deviations can be explained by the presence of null alleles. All loci cross-amplified in at least two out of four congeneric Lethrus species (L. bituberculatus, L. scoparius, L. strymonensis and L. perun). The polymorphic microsatellite markers we present for L. apterus will be valuable for future population genetic studies.
