Megjegyzések:Feather molt is recognized as an energetically costly activity for birds, and parasite infestation during molt has the potential to reduce host fitness because parasites sequester essential nutrients and stimulate the immune system. We manipulated the coccidian parasite load of captive male House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) by suppressing the natural infection of control birds with an anticoccidial drug and infecting experimental birds with coccidian oocysts. Following infestation, the effect of chronic coccidian infection on individual condition, molt and 12 indices of physiological and immunological function was assessed. We found a significant positive relationship between infestation and heterophil/lymphocyte ratio measured at capture, indicating infectioninduced stress. We also found that coccidians negatively affected feather growth during molt: the increase in wing length of the noninfected birds was significantly higher than that of infected birds. In comparison to control birds, infected birds showed a significantly higher concentration of white blood cells and greater blood bactericidal activity. There was also a positive correlation between infection intensity, agglutination and lysis of blood in the experimentally infested birds, which indicated activation of the constitutive innate immune system during infection. Finally, the total antioxidant capacity of the blood increased significantly, while the carotenoid concentration decreased significantly in infected compared with control birds. Therefore, we showed that coccidians stimulated several measures of the constitutive innate immunity, including the bactericidal activity of the blood, and that coccidians can have significant negative effects on the health and possibly fitness of molting House Sparrows

Megjegyzések:We investigated the effects of nutritional limitation, humoral immune activation, and their interaction on postnuptial molting of aviary-kept house sparrows (Passer domesticus (L., 1758. In a 2*2 experimental design, we measured the progress of molting and the quality of feathers produced during molting by house sparrow exposed to different diet qualities (high and low9 and humoral immune activation with sheep red blood cells (SRBC). Food quality, but not the activation of humoral immunity, affected significantly the body mass and the process of molting.Sparrows feeding on low-quality food had decreased body mass and longer molts than the high-quality group.Low-quality food, but not the activation of humoral immunity, reduced significantly the length and mass (i.e.,the quality) of primaries grown during molting. birds responded significantly to injection with SRBC compared with the control group, but the immune response was similar between nutritional groups. The absence of a negative effect of humoral immunity on molting in house sparrows might be related to the low energy and nutritional requirements of mounting and maintaining a humoral immune response.

Cím:Carotenoids modulate the effect of coccidian infection on the condition and immune response in moulting house sparrows / Péter László Pap, Csongor István Vágási, Gábor Árpád Czirják, Adriana Titilincu, Adela Pintea, Zoltán Barta
Dátum:2009
Megjegyzések:In the present study, we experimentally manipulated coccidian parasitism and dietary carotenoid availability in a fully factorial experiment in male house sparrows (Passer domesticus Linnaeus), and tested whether carotenoid supplementation reduces the cost of parasitism in terms of condition, moult and immune responses. We found that coccidians have a significant but transient negative effect on body mass, which can be reduced if birds have access to carotenoid supplementation in their diet. Experimental manipulation had no significant effect on the moulting parameters of the birds measured following coccidian infestation and during the whole moulting period. Carotenoid supplementation increased the plasma carotenoid concentration in both infested and medicated birds treated with a coccidiostatic drug; however, after two months exposure to parasites, plasma carotenoid concentration increased only in the carotenoid-supplemented and medicated group whereas no difference was observed between the carotenoid-supplemented and infested and non-supplemented groups. On the contrary, coccidian infestation was not affected by carotenoid supplementation. Experimental infestation decreased the antibody response to sheep red blood cells (SRBCs), although no significant effect was observed in the capacity of the birds to respond to a mitogenic challenge with phytohemagglutinin. Within the experimentally infested groups birds with carotenoid-supplemented food tended to have an increased anti-SRBC humoral immune response. The positive correlation between coccidian infestation and the strength of the humoral immune response against SRBCs in the non-supplemented and infested groups indicates that this part of the immune system plays an important role in defence against these parasites.

Cím:Increase of feather quality during moult : a possible implication of feather deformities in the evolution of partial moult in the great tit Parus major / Péter L. Pap, Zoltán Barta, Jácint Tökölyi, Csongor I. Vágási
Dátum:2007
Megjegyzések:Here we investigate the change in feather quality during partial post-juvenile and complete post-breeding moult in great tit Parus major by measuring the change in the number of fault bars and feather holes on wing and tail feathers. Feathers grown during ontogeny usually are of lower quality than feathers grown following subsequent moults at independence. This is reflected by higher number of fault bars and feather holes on juveniles compared to adults. Fault bars are significantly more common on tail and proximal wing feathers than on the distal remiges, indicating a mechanism of adaptive allocation of stress induced abnormalities during ontogeny into the aerodynamically less important flight feathers. On the contrary, feather holes produced probably by chewing lice have a more uniform distribution on wing and tail feathers, which may reflect the inability of birds to control their distribution, or the weak natural selection imposed by them. The adaptive value of the differential allocation of fault bar between groups of feathers seems to be supported by the significantly higher recapture probability of those juvenile great tits which have fewer fault bars at fledging on the aerodynamically most important primaries, but not on other groups of flight feathers. The selection imposed by feather holes seems to be smaller, since except for the positive association between hatching date, brood size and the number of feather holes at fledging, great tits' survival was not affected by the number of feather holes. During post-juvenile moult, the intensity of fault bars drops significantly through the replacement of tail feathers and tertials, resulting in disproportional reduction of the total number of fault bars on flight feathers related to the number of feathers replaced. The reduction in the number of fault bars during post-juvenile moult associated with their adaptive allocation to proximal wing feathers and rectrices may explain the evolution of partial post-juvenile moult in the great tit, since the quality of flight feathers can be increased significantly at a relatively small cost. Our results may explain the widespread phenomenon of partial post-juvenile moult of flight feathers among Palearctic passerines. During the next complete post-breeding moult, the total number of fault bars on flight feathers has remained unchanged, indicating the effectiveness of partial post-juvenile moult in reducing the number of adaptively allocated fault bars. The number of feather holes has also decreased on groups of feathers replaced during partial post-juvenile moult, but the reduction is proportional with the number of feathers moulted. In line with this observation, the number of feather holes is further reduced during post-breeding moult on primaries and secondaries, resulting in an increase in feather quality of adult great tits.

Dátum:2010
ISSN:0373-2266
Megjegyzések:We investigated seasonal variation in haematological indices and immune function in the non-migratory Great Tit Parus major over a complete annual cycle. The haematocrit value showed a marked reduction in spring and summer, reaching a lowest value during moult, after which it increased to reach a maximum in winter and spring. The peak in the heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (H/L) during July indicated that Great Tits were the most stressed during the first half of the moulting period. The increase in heterophils and H/L ratio, concurrent with a reduced number of lymphocytes during the breeding season, probably reflected the cost of reproduction in terms of physiological stress and immune suppression. After breeding the number of heterophils and the H/L ratio decreased, reaching a lowest value during winter. The concentration of immunoglobulins followed the seasonal pattern in the number of heterophils, though highest values occurred somewhat later, in July?September during the second part of the moulting period. Our observations indicated large differences in activity throughout the year of different components of the immune system. This suggests differences in function among the components and possibly differences in susceptibility to stress, parasitism and hormones during the annual cycle. When juveniles became independent of their parents, the immunoglobulin concentration increased, whereas other immune measures did not show a significant change. This indicates a rapid increase of at least one component of the immune system after the young fledge.

Dátum:2010
ISSN:0028-1042
Megjegyzések:Difference between sexes in parasitism is a common phenomenon among birds, which may be related to differences between males and females in their investment into immune functions or as a consequence of differential exposure to parasites. Because life-history strategies change sex specifically during the annual cycle, immunological responses of the host aiming to reduce the impact of parasites may be sexually dimorphic. Despite the great complexity of the immune system, studies on immunoecology generally characterise the immune status through a few variables, often overlooking potentially important seasonal and gender effects. However, because of the differences in physiological and defence mechanisms among different arms of the immune system, we expect divergent responses of immune components to environmental seasonality. In male and female house sparrows (Passer domesticus), we measured the major components of the immune system (innate, acquired, cellular and humoral) during four important life-history stages across the year: (1) mating, (2) breeding, (3) moulting and (4) during the winter capture and also following introduction to captivity in aviary. Different individuals were sampled from the same population during the four life cycle stages. We found that three out of eight immune variables showed a significant life cycle stage x sex interaction. The difference in immune response between the sexes was significant in five immune variables during the mating stage, when females had consistently stronger immune function than males, while variables varied generally non-significantly with sex during the remaining three life cycle stages. Our results show that the immune system is highly variable between life cycle stages and sexes, highlighting the potential fine tuning of the immune system to specific physiological states and environmental conditions.

Cím:Seasonality in the uropygial gland size and feather mite abundance in house sparrows Passer domesticus: natural covariation and an experiment. / Péter L. Pap, Csongor I. Vágási, Gergely Osváth, Cosmin Mureşan, Zoltán Barta
Dátum:2010
Megjegyzések:The seasonal change, i.e. the marked differences between seasons of low and high productivity, in the abundance ofectosymbionts and the defence intensity of the host against pathogens is a well defined characteristic of temperate zoneorganisms. Here we investigate the seasonal variation in the uropygial gland size and the abundance of Proctophyllodesfeather mites on the wing feathers of house sparrows Passer domesticus in two breeding populations. The size of theuropygial gland varied significantly in male and female house sparrows over the annual cycle. The gland was small duringthe non-breeding and mating season, after that it started to grow sharply, reaching its maximum size during breeding.Females had larger gland volumes than males during breeding, and the increase in gland size during breeding was morepronounced in females than in males. The number of feather mites was the lowest during breeding, followed by anincrease during moult and reaching its maximum between the wintering and mating seasons. The absence of a significantrelationship between the uropygial gland size and the abundance of feather mites, after controlling for potentialconfounding variables, supports the view that gland oils do not regulate the number of mites. To investigate further thishypothesis, through a full factorial experimental design we tested the effect of uropygial gland and photoperiodmanipulation on the population size and population dynamics of feather mites. The manipulation of uropygial gland hadno effect on mites, supporting our observational results. As a result of the experimentally increased day-length, theabundance of feather mites on wing feathers decreased significantly and more sharply than in the control group, supporting the previous anecdotal evidence about the photosensitivity of these organisms. Using photoperiodic cues, feather mites may respond to seasonal changes that affect their life-history and population dynamics.

Cím:Haste makes waste but condition matters : Molt rate-feather quality trade-off in a sedentary songbird / Csongor I. Vágási, Péter L. Pap, Orsolya Vincze, Zoltán Benkő, Attila Marton, Zoltán Barta
Dátum:2012
ISSN:1932-6203
Megjegyzések:AbstractBackground: The trade-off between current and residual reproductive values is central to life history theory, although thepossible mechanisms underlying this trade-off are largely unknown. The ♭molt constraint' hypothesis suggests that molt andplumage functionality are compromised by the preceding breeding event, yet this candidate mechanism remainsinsufficiently explored.Methodology/Principal Findings: The seasonal change in photoperiod was manipulated to accelerate the molt rate. Thistreatment simulates the case of naturally late-breeding birds. House sparrows Passer domesticus experiencing acceleratedmolt developed shorter flight feathers with more fault bars and body feathers with supposedly lower insulation capacity (i.e.shorter, smaller, with a higher barbule density and fewer plumulaceous barbs). However, the wing, tail and primary featherlengths were shorter in fast-molting birds if they had an inferior body condition, which has been largely overlooked inprevious studies. The rachis width of flight feathers was not affected by the treatment, but it was still condition-dependent.Conclusions/Significance: This study shows that sedentary birds might face evolutionary costs because of the molt rate?feather quality conflict. This is the first study to experimentally demonstrate that (1) molt rate affects several aspects of bodyfeathers as well as flight feathers and (2) the costly effects of rapid molt are condition-specific. We conclude that molt rateand its association with feather quality might be a major mediator of life history trade-offs. Our findings also suggest a noveladvantage of early breeding, i.e. the facilitation of slower molt and the condition-dependent regulation of feather growth.

Dátum:2011
Megjegyzések:The most important function of moult in birds is the renewal of deteriorated feathers. Worn and holey remiges may incur fitness costs, yet little is known about the factors responsible for the degree of feather wear and sources of variation in feather hole incidence. Here, we report results on variation in feather quality based on a study of three consecutive annual cycles of a Great Tit Parus major population. We found that month, age, sex, weight and the presence of feather holes are the main sources of variation in degree of wear. Juveniles and individuals with lower feather quality (measured through rachis diameter) and with fault bars present had higher feather hole loads. Feather abrasion peaked in the breeding season and was higher in females probably due to higher workload. The lower feather quality of juveniles compared to adults probably arises because of fast ontogeny in contrast to adults' prolonged moult. Our results indicate that feather deformities are positively interrelated and can be used as proxies of feather quality. Our findings on the correlates of feather holes seem partially contradictory with the widespread view that holes are feeding marks of chewing lice. We propose that feather holes are instead minor feather handicaps, at least in Great Tits.
