Megjegyzések:One of the main goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 is to avoid further loss of biodiversity and to restore ecosystems. These efforts can be facilitated by compiling the main research topics related to conservation biology to provide new evidence for the most urgent knowledge gaps, and publicise it to researchers, research funders and policy makers. We used the possible future statements from the Hungarian Environmental Foresight Report for 2050 which identified region-specific problems. To highlight likely future environmental and conservation questions, in this study we asked researchers from the fields of ecology and conservation to define research questions addressing these future statements in line with international research trends and challenges. The study resulted in fourteen priority research topics, split into seven clusters relevant to biological conservation that should be targeted by stakeholders, primarily policy makers and funders to focus research capacity to these topics. The main overarching themes identified here include a wide range of approaches and solutions such as innovative technologies, involvement of local stakeholders and citizen scientists, legislation, and issues related to human health. These indicate that solutions to conservation challenges require a multidisciplinary approach in design and a multi-actor approach in implementation. Although the identified research priorities were listed for Hungary, they are in line with European and global biodiversity strategies, and can be tailored to suit other Central and Eastern European countries as well. We believe that our prioritisation can help science?policy discussion, and will eventually contribute to healthy and well-functioning ecosystems.

Cím:A hitchhiker from the beach: the spread of the maritime halophyte Cochlearia danica along salted continental roads / Fekete R., Mesterházy A., Valkó O., Molnár V. A.
Dátum:2018
ISSN:0032-7786
Megjegyzések:The increase in road networks facilitates the dispersal of many species of plants along roadsides. In these special habitats, the use of deicing salt can provide suitable habitat conditions for theestablishment of stress-tolerant halophytes. This study investigates the spread of an alienhalophyte Cochlearia danica in continental Europe. This species is native to the Atlantic shoresof Europe, has already spread in many countries along roadsides and was recently discovered inHungary. We performed a literature review to track the European spread of this species, andinvestigated the Hungarian occurrences in detail. Then we determined the ability of this species toadapt to local soil conditions by means of soil analyses and germination tests using 19 differentNaCl concentrations and alkaline soils. To estimate the rate of spread, we estimated the size of thefour Hungarian populations in 2016 and 2017, and at the same time we measured the number offlowering stems, number of flowers in an inflorescence, number of seeds per fruit and seed mass.Cochlearia danica is recorded growing along roadsides in eight countries in continental Europe.Literature data indicate a rapid spread of this species along European roads, of 62?65 km/year.In Hungary this species is recorded at four roadside localities characterized by a high soil saltcontent. The relationship between NaCl concentration and percentage germination followeda sigmoidal curve. Germination tests revealed a significant negative effect of NaCl concentrationon germination above 0.5% NaCl, but germination occurred even on extremely saline substrateswith a 2% NaCl concentration. The area of the largest Hungarian population decreased by morethan 99% and that of the second largest population increased by more than 30% between 2016 and2017. Even though this species can adapt to high salinity in the soil, these rapid and markedchanges in population size indicate that the population dynamics of this species may depend oninteractions between the amount of local precipitation and soil type. Our study indicates that weshould expect further occurrences of C. danica along roads.

Cím:Do large-seeded herbs have a small range size? The seed mass-distribution range trade-off hypothesis / Sonkoly Judit, Deák Balázs, Valkó Orsolya, Molnár V. Attila, Tóthmérész Béla, Török Péter
Dátum:2017
Megjegyzések:We aimed to introduce and test the "seed mass-distribution range trade-off" hypothesis, that is, that range size is negatively related to seed mass due to the generally better dispersal ability of smaller seeds. Studying the effects of environmental factors on the seed mass and range size of species, we also aimed to identify habitats where species may be at risk and need extra conservation effort to avoid local extinctions. We collected data for seed mass, global range size, and indicators for environmental factors of the habitat for 1,600 species of the Pannonian Ecoregion (Central Europe) from the literature. We tested the relationship between species' seed mass, range size, and indicator values for soil moisture, light intensity, and nutrient supply. We found that seed mass is negatively correlated with range size; thus, a seed mass?distribution range trade-off was validated based on the studied large species pool. We found increasing seed mass with decreasing light intensity and increasing nutrient availability, but decreasing seed mass with increasing soil moisture. Range size increased with increasing soil moisture and nutrient supply, but decreased with increasing light intensity. Our results supported the hypothesis that there is a trade-off between seed mass and distribution range. We found that species of habitats characterized by low soil moisture and nutrient values but high light intensity values have small range size. This emphasizes that species of dry, infertile habitats, such as dry grasslands, could be more vulnerable to habitat fragmentation or degradation than species of wet and fertile habitats. The remarkably high number of species and the use of global distribution range in our study support our understanding of global biogeographic processes and patterns that are essential in defining conservation priorities.

Megjegyzések:In the present paper we report original thousand-seed weight data for the flora of the PannonianBasin. Our goal was to demonstrate the usefulness of seed weight databases by analysingseed weight data in relation to social behaviour types and life forms. We specificallyasked the following questions: (i) how the seed weights are related to social behaviourtype categories; (ii) how the life form of the species influences seed weight differencesbetween respective social behaviour types? Own weight measurements are provided for1,405 taxa; and for 187 taxa we published seed weight data for the first time: these weremostly endemics, orchids and/or species with Pontic, Caspian or continental distribution.Several taxonomic or functional groups are underrepresented in our database, like aquaticplants, rare arable weeds and sub-Mediterranean species. Problematic taxa, some difficultto-harvest species or species with low seed production and cultivated adventives are alsounderrepresented. We found that the plant strategies expressed by social behaviour types were significantly different in terms of seed weights. The lowest seed weight scores werefound for natural pioneers, whereas the highest ones were found for adventives and introducedcultivated plants. Short-lived herbaceous species had significantly higher seedweight scores than herbaceous perennials. No significant differences were found betweenspecialists and generalists within the stress tolerant group. We found that short-livedgraminoids possess heavier seeds than perennial graminoids, perennial and annual forbs.Naturalness scores were negatively correlated with seed weights. Our findings showedthat seed collections and databases are not only for storing plant material and seed weightdata, but can be effectively used for understanding ecological trends and testing planttrait-based hypotheses. Even the identified gaps underline the necessity of further seedcollection and measurements.

Dátum:2023
ISSN:2468-5844
Megjegyzések:Restoring near-natural grasslands on roadsides is an excellent opportunity to support native biodiversity and provide ecosystem services that benefit the safety and functionality of road networks. Although several best practices and case studies are available on biodiversity-friendly roadside revegetation measures, their application is quite scarce, and, in practice, ecological aspects are rarely considered. To restore and preserve diverse and native roadside vegetation, we suggest (1) facilitating discussion, cooperation, and knowledge transfer between ecologists and agencies responsible for roadside vegetation management, (2) prioritizing the use of native plant species in roadside restoration and revegetation, as well as increasing regional capacities for native seed production, (3) supporting the application of biodiversity-friendly management practices of roadside vegetation, and (4) inventorying and conserving remnant semi-natural roadside grasslands.
