Megjegyzések:We investigate the impact-induced damage and fracture of a bar-shaped specimen of heterogeneous materials focusing on how the system approaches perforation as the impact energy is gradually increased. A simple model is constructed which represents the bar as two rigid blocks coupled by a breakable interface with disordered local strength. The bar is clamped at the two ends, and the fracture process is initiated by an impactor hitting the bar in the middle. Our calculations revealed that depending on the imparted energy, the system has two phases: at low impact energies the bar suffers damage but keeps its integrity, while at sufficiently high energies, complete perforation occurs. We demonstrate that the transition from damage to perforation occurs analogous to continuous phase transitions. Approaching the critical point from below, the intact fraction of the interface goes to zero, while the deformation rate of the bar diverges according to power laws as function of the distance from the critical energy. As the degree of disorder increases, farther from the transition point the critical exponents agree with their zero disorder counterparts; however, close to the critical point a crossover occurs to a higher exponent.

Megjegyzések:We study the fatigue fracture of disordered materials by means of computer simulations of a discrete element model. We extend a two-dimensional fracture model to capture the microscopic mechanisms relevant for fatigue, and we simulate the diametric compression of a disc shape specimen under a constant external force. The model allows to follow the development of the fracture process on the macro- and micro-level varying the relative influence of the mechanisms of damage accumulation over the load history and healing of microcracks. As a specific example we consider recent experimental results on the fatigue fracture of asphalt. Our numerical simulations show that for intermediate applied loads the life time of the specimen presents a power law behavior. Under the effect of healing, more prominent for small loads compared to the tensile strength of the material, the life time of the sample increases and a fatigue limit emerges below which no macroscopic failure occurs. The numerical results are in a good qualitative agreement with the experimental findings.

Megjegyzések:We introduce a fiber bundle model where the interaction among fibers is modeled by an adjustable stress-transfer function that can interpolate between the two limiting cases of load redistribution, i.e., the global and the local load sharing schemes. By varying the range of interaction, several features of the model are numerically studied and a crossover from mean-field to short-range behavior is obtained. The properties of the two regimes and the emergence of the crossover in between are explored by numerically studying the dependence of the ultimate strength of the material on the system size, the distribution of avalanches of breakings, and of the cluster sizes of broken fibers. Finally, we analyze the moments of the cluster size distributions to accurately determine the value at which the crossover is observed.

Cím:Creep rupture of viscoelastic fiber bundles / Raul Cruz Hidalgo, Ferenc Kun, Hans. J. Herrmann
Dátum:2002
ISSN:2470-0045 2470-0053
Megjegyzések:We study the creep rupture of bundles of viscoelastic fibers occurring under uniaxial constant tensile loading. A fiber bundle model is introduced that combines the viscoelastic constitutive behavior and the strain controlled breaking of fibers. Analytical and numerical calculations showed that above a critical external load the deformation of the system monotonically increases in time resulting in global failure at a finite time t(f), while below the critical load the deformation tends to a constant value giving rise to an infinite lifetime. Our studies revealed that the nature of the transition between the two regimes, i.e., the behavior of t(f) at the critical load sigma(c), strongly depends on the range of load sharing: for global load sharing t(f) has a power law divergence at sigma(c) with a universal exponent of 0.5, however, for local load sharing the transition becomes abrupt: at the critical load t(f) jumps to a finite value, analogous to second-and first-order phase transitions, respectively. The acoustic response of the bundle during creep is also studied.

Dátum:2017
ISSN:2470-0045 2470-0053
Megjegyzések:We investigate the size scaling of the macroscopic fracture strength of heterogeneous materials when microscopic disorder is controlled by fat-tailed distributions. We consider a fiber bundle model where the strength of single fibers is described by a power law distribution over a finite range. Tuning the amount of disorder by varying the power law exponent and the upper cutoff of fibers' strength, in the limit of equal load sharing an astonishing size effect is revealed: For small system sizes the bundle strength increases with the number of fibers, and the usual decreasing size effect of heterogeneous materials is restored only beyond a characteristic size. We show analytically that the extreme order statistics of fibers' strength is responsible for this peculiar behavior. Analyzing the results of computer simulations we deduce a scaling form which describes the dependence of the macroscopic strength of fiber bundles on the parameters of microscopic disorder over the entire range of system sizes.

Megjegyzések:We investigate the effect of the amount of disorder on the statistics of breaking bursts during the quasistatic fracture of heterogeneous materials. We consider a fiber bundle model where the strength of single fibers is sampled from a power-law distribution over a finite range, so that the amount of materials' disorder can be controlled by varying the power-law exponent and the upper cutoff of fibers' strength. Analytical calculations and computer simulations, performed in the limit of equal load sharing, revealed that depending on the disorder parameters the mechanical response of the bundle is either perfectly brittle where the first fiber breaking triggers a catastrophic avalanche, or it is quasibrittle where macroscopic failure is preceded by a sequence of bursts. In the quasibrittle phase, the statistics of avalanche sizes is found to show a high degree of complexity. In particular, we demonstrate that the functional form of the size distribution of bursts depends on the system size: for large upper cutoffs of fibers' strength, in small systems the sequence of bursts has a high degree of stationarity characterized by a power-law size distribution with a universal exponent. However, for sufficiently large bundles the breaking process accelerates towards the critical point of failure, which gives rise to a crossover between two power laws. The transition between the two regimes occurs at a characteristic system size which depends on the disorder parameters.
