Cím:Transition from anomalous kinetics toward Fickian diffusion for Si dissolution in to amorphous Ge / Zoltán Balogh, Zoltán Erdélyi, Dezső L. Beke, Gábor Langer, Attila Csik, Hans-Gerd Boyen, Ulf Wiedwald, Paul Ziemann, Alain Portavoce, Christophe Geirardeaux
Dátum:2008
Megjegyzések:Over the last years, several experimental and theoretical studies of diffusion kinetics on the nanoscale have shown that the time evolution (x proportional to t(c)(k)) differs from the classical Fickian law (k(c)=0.5). However, all work was based on crystalline samples or models, so far. In this letter, we report on the diffusion kinetics of a thin amorphous Si layer into amorphous Ge to account for the rising importance of amorphous materials in nanodevices. Employing surface sensitive techniques, the initial k(c) was found at 0.7 +/- 0.1. Moreover, after some monolayers of Si dissolved into the Ge, k(c) changes to the generally expected classical Fickian law with k(c)=0.5.

Megjegyzések:Morphological changes of thin, discontinuous gold films on SrTiO3 substrates, resulting from evaporation in the temperature range of 1143?1278 K, have been investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). If the gold covered fractionof the surface is small, the evaporation kinetics can be related to the desorption of adatoms. Measuring the density of the gold beads and the timedependence of the effective thickness of the film as calculated from the diameter of the beads, the following parameters have been determined: thesurface diffusion length of the gold adatoms, ls?m???2:2?26:7 2:0? 10 3 exp? ?77 26kJ=mol=RT?, the mass transfer surface diffusion coefficient, D0s?m2=s???3:25?433 3:23? 1010 exp? ?560 49kJ=mol=RT?and the evaporation flux, J?m 2s 1??2:79?267 2:76? 1035 exp? ?426 46kJ=mol=RT?

Megjegyzések:Hydrogenated multilayers (MLs) of a-Si/a-Ge have been analysed to establish the reasons of H release during annealing that has been seen to bring about structural modifications even up to well-detectable surface degradation. Analyses carried out on single layers of a-Si and a-Ge show that H is released from its bond to the host lattice atom and that it escapes from the layer much more efficiently in a-Ge than in a-Si because of the smaller binding energy of the H-Ge bond and probably of a greater weakness of the Ge lattice. This should support the previous hypothesis that the structural degradation of a-Si/a-Ge MLs primary starts with the formation of H bubbles in the Ge layers.

Megjegyzések:Based on our recent works we will show that the interplay of the chemical effect (phase-separation tendency) and the diffusion asymmetry (composition dependence of diffusion coefficient) can lead to nonparabolic shift of the interface in phase separating binary systems. Computer simulations show that the diffusion asymmetry in phase separating system results in interface shift proportional to tkc where 0.25?kc?1 (k c=0.5 corresponds to parabolic shift obtained from Fick's laws) [3]. In an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) based experiment we managed to demonstrate that this deviation indeed exists (kc=0.63), using a thin Ni deposit on top of a Au(111) single crystal [4]. Furthermore in this paper we will show that the dissolution of a thin film into semi-infinite substrate usually consists of two processes: saturation of the surface with substrate atoms and the shift of the interface. A separation method of these processes is also presented.

Cím:Experimental evidence for a nonparabolic interface shift on the nanoscale during the dissolution of Ni into bulk Au (111) / G. L. Katona, Z. Erdélyi, D. L. Beke, Ch. Dietrich, F. Weigl, H.-G. Boyen, B. Koslowski, P. Ziemann

ISSN:0163-1829
Megjegyzések:We report experimental evidence for the violation of the "diffusional parabolic law" (x proportional to t(0.5), where x is the interface shift and t is time) as predicted recently by computer simulation [Z. Erdelyi , Phys. Rev. B 69, 113407 (2004)] for a binary system with restricted mutual solubility. Using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we investigated the shift of the interface between a thin Ni layer (3 nm) deposited under UHV conditions on top of a Au(111) single crystal during its thermally driven dissolution into the Au substrate. From the temporal evolution of the Ni-2p and Au-4f core level intensities at various fixed temperatures, a power law could be extracted for the time dependence of the interface shift (proportional to t(kc)) with exponents in the range of 0.6-0.7. Thus, clear experimental evidence is provided that the kinetics of such a shift might differ from the well known parabolic law if restricted to the nanometer scale.
