Megjegyzések:	Factor XIII (FXIII) activity and antigen levels were determined in 955 patients investigated by coronary angiography. Patients were sub-grouped according to the presence or absence of coronary sclerosis (CS+, CS-) and a positive history of myocardial infarction (MI+, MI-). In females, but not in males, adjusted FXIII activity and antigen levels were significantly elevated in the CS+MI+ group compared to in the CS+MI- group. FXIII levels in the upper tertile were associated with significantly increased risk of MI in females, but not in males.

Megjegyzések:	The prothrombotic state resulting from the elevation of certain clotting factors and suppression of fibrinolysis con- tribute to the risk of atherothrombotic diseases. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been associated with elevated plasma fibrinogen concentration, increased plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) level and decreased tissue plas- minogen activator (tPA) activity. 1-3 Coagulation factor XIII (FXIII) circulates in association with fibrinogen and plays a central role in fibrin stabilization and fibrinolysis. 4 We have recently shown that in women with coronary steno- sis and history of myocardial infarction adjusted plasma FXIII levels are elevated as compared to clinical controls, and in women, but not in men, elevated FXIII level repre- sents a 2.5-3.0-fold increased risk of myocardial infarc- tion. 5 In this study we investigated FXIII levels in patients with PAD and determined the risk of PAD conferred to patients by elevated FXIII level.
