Megjegyzések:In the Detritus Inputs and Removal Treatment (DIRT) field experimentsestablished at the Síkf}okút Site (northern Hungary) in October 2000, an experimentalapproach was applied to study long-term effects of litter quality and quantityon pH and nutrient mobility of soil in a Quercetum petraeae-cerris forest. Ourprevious results have suggested that decreases in organic matter content, total N,Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the soil are the consequence of the reduction inforest litter production induced by climate change and the resultant soil degradationover a longer period. An eight-year litter manipulation demonstrated a relationbetween soil pH and Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations in the soil. The reduction of litterproduction resulted in a decrease of the soil pH which occurred due to the decreasingMg2+ and Ca2+ inputs into the soil, and consequent reduction of soil bufferingcapacity against the acidifying effects of the acidic intermediates of litter decompositionand humus compounds. If the litter production increases as a result ofclimate change, it should be accompanied by increasing C, total N, Ca2+ and Mg2+contents in the soil and soil pH, with a positive effect on the soil organic matter andfertility. However, this scenario is rather unlikely as our results indicated decreasinglitter production in the measurement period.

Megjegyzések:In the DIRT (Detritus Input and Removal Treatment) field experiments established at the Síkfőkút Site (North Hungary) in October 2000, an experiment was initiated to study the long-termeffects of litter quality and quantity on pH and nutrient content (organic carbon, N forms, PO43?, K+,Mg2+, Ca2+) of soil in a Quercetum petraeae-cerris forest. An eight-year litter manipulationdemonstrated a close connection between the changes in pH and Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentration. Thedecline of litter production, the decrease of the soil pH due to lower Mg2+ and Ca2+ input lead toconsequent reduction of soil buffering capacity. The acidification interferes with the decompositionprocess of litter and humus compounds. Our results suggest decreases in organic matter content, totalN, Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the soil as a consequence of decline in forest litter productioninduced by climate change and a resulting degradation of the soil over a longer period.
