Cím:Abiotic stress effects on the antioxidative response profile of Albizia julibrissin Durazz. (Fabaceae) / Gülriz Baycu, Sven Erik Rognes, Hakan Özden, Nihal Gören-Saglam, István Csatári, Szilárd Szabó
Megjegyzések:Abiotic stresses (e.g., heavy metals, drought, cold, or combinations) induce oxidative stress with overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We have investigated the antioxidative responses of Albizia julibrissin Durazz. (silk tree, Fabaceae). Four-month-old plants grown in sand cultures were subjected to various single or sequential treatments involving exposure to cadmium (50-250 ?mol L-1 Cd), lead (1000-5000 ?mol L-1 Pb), chilling at 4 ?C (CH), or drought (DR), for a period of 7?45 days. Leaf extracts were assayed for glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione-disulfide reductase (GR), catalase (CAT), soluble proline (Pro), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and guaiacol peroxidase (GUAPX). Cd and Pb accumulation in the leaves was also measured. CAT activity decreased strongly with increasing Pb exposure and after CH. It was also found to be reduced after Cd and DR treatments. GR activity increased highly in nearly all treatments, most strongly at high Cd or Pb, after DR + CH, and after CH followed by Cd. GUAPX and GPX showed similar trends of increase. APX activity dropped after CH, but increased after low Cd treatment and in CH + DR sequential stresses. Massive accumulation of soluble Pro occurred after 14?21 days in highly Cd- or Pb-stressed plants. CH or DR acclimation led to some alterations of antioxidative responses, particularly for CAT, GR, and APX. Our data indicate that GSH, GSH-linked redox systems, peroxidases, and Pro are possibly the more important antioxidants under severe stress.

Cím:Nitrogen and carbon concentrations in the samples of soil, sediment and Phragmites australis (common reed) from Küçükçekmece Lagoon area (Istanbul, Turkey) / Istvan Csatari, Gülriz Baycu, Ender Makineci, Szilard Szabo, Doganay Tolunay, Gyula Lakatos
Megjegyzések:Küçükçekmece Lagoon in Istanbul (Turkey) receives increasing attention due to its deteriorating water quality and the pollution of the surrounding watershed. In this study, seven sampling points were selected and environmental parameters including lagoon water (pH, electrolytic conductivity), sediment and soil of the littoral zone (pH, electrolytic conductivity, texture, shell content, total carbon and nitrogen concentrations) were measured and the effects of high salinity on the total C, total N, and C/N ratio in different organs of Phragmites australis were discussed. According to the electrolytic conductivity results, our sampling sites can be considered as highly saline environments. Texture analyses have indicated that the sediment and soil samples were mostly sandy with a high sensitivity to pollution discharges. Highest N concentrations were measured in the leaves of Phragmites with an increasing order in the urban, agricultural and industrial sampling sites (1.73-3.29%). N inputs into the highly saline Kü₀cük₀cekmece Lagoon can be associated with different pollution sources and the observed Phragmites australis stands may be favourable for the natural elimination of N in this area.

Cím:Study of heavy metal pollution of the Upper-Tisza floodplain using XRF techniques / Csedreki L., Csatári I., Szabó Sz.
ISSN:1584-2363 1842-7863
Megjegyzések:The increased level of heavy-metals in the sediments of floodplains is strongly related to the Romanian metalwork. Different heavy metals (eg. Cu, Zn, Pb) often accumulate in the silt of the ore spoil bank and they can become a serious source of environmental pollution. In this study the heavy metal content of the floodplain of the Tisza-Kraszna crossing was determined with the help of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (ED-XRF), and particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method. Cu and Zn concentration values were compared with data obtained from Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (F-AAS). The depth profile of the sampling territory was determined for Cu, Zn, and Pb concentrations. We carried out toxicological experiments with Synapis alba germination and root elongation to decide how the exceedance of the limit of geological agent affected the vegetation.
