Cím:Spatial distribution of bivalves in relation to environmental conditions (middle Danube catchment, Hungary) / E. Bódis, J. Nosek, N. Oertel, B. Tóth, E. Hornung, R. Sousa

Megjegyzések:The spatial distribution of bivalves in relation to environmental conditions was studied along a second- and thirdorder stream ? medium-sized river (River Ipoly) ? large river (River Danube) continuum in the Hungarian Danube River system.Quantitative samples were collected four times in 2007 and a total of 1662 specimens, belonging to 22 bivalve species wereidentified. Among these species, two are endangered (Pseudanodonta complanata, Unio crassus) and five are invasive (Dreissenapolymorpha, D. rostriformis bugensis, Corbicula fluminea, C. fluminalis, Anodonta woodiana) in Hungary. The higherdensity presented by Pisidium subtruncatum, P. supinum, P. henslowanum and C. fluminea suggests that these species mayhave a key role in this ecosystem. Three different faunal groups were distinguished but no significant temporal change wasdetected. The lowest density and diversity with two species (P. casertanum and P. personatum) occurred in streams. The highestdensity and diversity was found in the River Ipoly, in the side arms of the Danube and in the main arm of the Danube with sandand silt substrate, being dominated by P. subtruncatum and P. henslowanum. Moderate density and species richness wereobserved in the main arm of the Danube with pebble and stone substrate, being dominated by C. fluminea and S. rivicola. Tenenvironmental variables were found to have significant influence on the distribution of bivalves, the strongest explanatoryfactors being substrate types, current velocity and sedimentological characteristics.

Cím:Composition and dynamics of benthic organic matter in the middle Danube section / Bence Tóth, János Nosek, Nándor Oertel
Dátum:2008
Megjegyzések:The organic matter of the sediment is prerequisite for the detritivorous community in the riverecosystem. To quantify this organic matter content and its changes in time and space, investigations wereperformed at two typical sites of the Hungarian Danube, which differ in their local hydrological characteristicsdue to the deposition and erosion processes. The distribution of the benthic particulate matter and the organicmatter content of that were analysed in the core samples of the river side and the near shore line in three layers(0-5, 5-10 and 10-15 cm) and in four fractions: Coarse (2360-710 mm), Fine (710-250 mm), Very fine (250-63 mm) and Ultra fine (<63 mm). The variability of the organic matter content was highest in the coarse fraction(CV: 86%), while it was the lowest in the ultra fine fraction (CV: 20%). Sites differed mainly in the organicmatter content of the C and F fractions, and the vertical changes of the benthic organic matter. The first TBOMrecords from the studied section of the Danube show relatively high values in comparison with the literature. Results show, that mainly the quantity of the fractions (i.e. hydrological characteristics) determined the BOMcontent of the bed sediments at the investigated sites.
