Megjegyzések:This study assessed the spatial distribution, concentration levels, and potential sources of eight heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in urban surface soils across Debrecen, Hungary`s second largest city. During the summer and autumn of 2022, 295 topsoil samples were collected, providing comprehensive spatial coverage of the city`s urban fabric. Metal concentrations were determined using Skyray Instrument Explorer 9000 X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometer, and results were interpreted through descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, hierarchical clustering, principal component analysis (PCA), and ordinary kriging interpolation. The analysis revealed a dual origin of metals: As, Co, Pb, and Zn showed strong anthropogenic signatures, particularly linked to traffic, urban waste, and construction materials, while Cr and Ni were associated with natural geogenic sources. Cadmium presented mixed behavior, reflecting both lithogenic and point-source urban pollution. Unlike earlier studies, the evaluation incorporated Hungarian and Dutch regulatory benchmarks to identify exceedances of environmental quality thresholds. PCA was statistically validated (KMO = 0.618, Bartlett`s p < 0.001), confirming the robustness of the grouping. Mapping highlighted contamination hotspots around traffic corridors and newly industrialized zones, including areas influenced by recent economic expansions of automotive and battery manufacturing. The findings underline the importance of high-resolution soil monitoring in rapidly urbanizing environments and offer a current benchmark for future risk assessment and urban planning in Hungary and comparable Central European contexts.

Megjegyzések:Due to the intensification of the poultry sector, poultry manure is being produced in increasing quantities, and its on-site management is becoming a critical problem. Animal health problems can be solved by stricter the veterinary and environmental standards. The off-site coupled industrial chicken manure recycling technology (Hosoya compost tea) fundamentally affects the agricultural value of new organic-based products. Due to the limited information available on manure recycling technology-related microbiological changes, this was examined in this study. A pot experiment with a pepper test plant was set up, using two different soils (Arenosol, slightly humous Arenosol) and two different doses (irrigation once a week with 40 mL of compost tea: dose 1, D1; irrigation twice a week with 40 mL of compost tea: dose 2, D2) of compost tea. Compost tea raw materials, compost tea, and compost tea treated soils were tested. The products (granulated manure, compost tea) and their effects were characterized by the following parameters: aerobic bacterial count (log CFU/g), fluorescein diacetate activity (3·,6·-diacetylfluorescein, FDA, ?g Fl/g soil), glucosidase enzyme activity (GlA; PNP/?mol/g), and identification of microorganisms in compost tea with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Furthermore, we aimed to investigate how the microbiological indicators tested, and the effect of compost tea on the tested plant, could be interpreted. Based on our results, the microbiological characteristics of the treated soils showed an increase in enzyme activity, in the case of FDA an increase +0.26 ?g Fl/g soil at D1, while the GlA increased +1.28 PNP/?mol/g with slightly humous Arenosol soil and increased +2.44 PNP/?mol/g at D1; and the aerobic bacterial count increased +0.15 log CFU/g at D2, +0.35 log CFU/g with slightly humous Arenosol and +0.85 log CFU/g at W8. MALDI-TOF MS results showed that the dominant bacterial genera analyzed were Bacillus sp., Lysinibacillus sp., and Pseudomonas sp. Overall, the microbial inducers we investigated could be a good alternative for evaluating the effects of compost solutions in soil-plant systems. In both soil types, the total chlorophyll content of compost tea-treated pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) had increased as a result of compost tea. D1 is recommended for Arenosol and, D2 for slightly humous Arenosol soil.

Dátum:2020
Megjegyzések:One of the most important function of soils is fertility. This function is closely related to soil water management, because the factors inhibiting fertility are mainly related to soil water management According to it, the consideration and improvement of soil water management properties are essential for modern and economical agricultural production. The effects of different additives on the water balance of clay, sand and loam-textured soils were studied in modell laboratory experiments. One of the most important criteria for the selection of additives was that the substance should not be harmful to the environment. It was also important that after the additives were added to the poultry manure, they did not impair its properties or inhibit its active ingredient content. Based on these considerations, four mineral-based additives (clay granules, alginite, bentonite, zeolite) and three superabsorbent polymers (Aqua Perla, Stockosorb, Zeba) were used. In our research, our specific goal was to investigate and evaluate how each additive affects the (1) capillary water-lifting capacity and (2) soil water holding capacity. Based on our results, only a few amount of superabsorbent polymers were able to absorb moisture in the soil layer and restrict water movement between the soil layers. The effect of mineral-based additives was not so strong than founded at the application of superabsorbent. Moreover, these additives also had a positive effect on the water balance of soils.

Megjegyzések:Extreme weather events, including sudden and intense rainfall, have become increasingly frequent due to the growing impact of climate change. This rapid influx of water often carries a variety of pollutants, including nutrients, heavy metals, and microbial contaminants, significantly modifying the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of urban streams. This study aims to evaluate the effects of rainfall events on the physicochemical and microbiological properties of the Tócó Stream, focusing on changes in key water quality parameters and microbial dynamics. Two sampling points were selected to represent different environmental areas: one site was located in a near-natural area, and the other was situated in an industrial zone, surrounded by facilities and a highway connecting road. Measurements were conducted both before and after the rainfall event. On-site measurements were performed included precipitation (mm), water level, dissolved oxygen content, and water temperature, while water samples were collected for laboratory analysis. The collected samples were tested for pH and electrical conductivity (EC) as well as for nutrient-concentrations of NH??, NO??, NO??, PO???, K?, SO???, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD5) were also determined from the samples. In case of microbiological parameters, total coliforms, yeasts, and total plate count were determined. Our results revealed differences between the two sampling sites and the pre- and post-rainfall conditions. At the industrial site the nutrient contents have decreased due to the rainfall, while at the near natural site we did not determine such change in connection with these elements. The same trend were detected in the case of EC as well. The microbiological analysis of the water samples clearly showed that while both total bacterial count and total coliform count showed an increasing trend after the rainfall at the first site, this trend was much less pronounced at the site reflecting the natural state. Our objecitve was to study the influence of sudden rainfall events, for the reason that these effects remain understudied, particularly in terms of their short- and long-term impacts on water quality and microbial properties.

Cím:Transport Modelling of Inorganic Agrochemicals in Sandy Soils using HYDRUS-2D / Tamás Magyar, Zsolt Fehér, Florence Alexandra Tóth, János Tamás, Péter Tamás Nagy
Dátum:2025
Megjegyzések:Agrochemicals such as fertilisers and copper-based fungicides are widely used worldwide in order to increase crop yield, protect crops, and improve soil and plant health. The excessive or irresponsible use of these chemicals could lead to accumulation in the soil posing significant environmental and health risks. Transport modelling is an excellent tool to predict environmental concentrations for risk assessment that could overall help to plan more efficient remediation technologies. Nowadays, transport models are capable to simulate the interactions among different agrochemicals, soil and water for the investigation of their mobility. In this study, the HYDRUS software was used for the long-term prediction of environmental concentrations of ammonium nitrate and copper in sandy soils. Three different soil profile with sandy texture were surveyed and modelled in Debrecen, Hungary classified according to their land use: agricultural, industrial, urban. Daily precipitation data was retrieved from the Hungarian Meteorological Service, covering an eight-year long period. On the top of the transport domain (1?1.5 m) atmospheric, on the bottom of the domain free drainage boundary conditions were applied, then observation nodes were assigned to different soil depths in accordance of the thickness of each soil layer. The specific quantity of the leachate applied on the soil surface was chosen to be 100 Lm-2 with 1 gL-1 of ammonium nitrate and 1 mgL-1 of copper concentration. To investigate the transport processes of the above-mentioned agrochemicals, three different scenarios were considered: 1) single contamination (once, on the first day), 2) regular contamination (once a month for a year), 3) continuous contamination (every day for a month). The results of the modelling revealed that copper could be found in the investigated soils for a long time (1-2 years), exceeding the contamination threshold (200 ?gL-1) at the very beginning of the simulation period, then showing a slow prolonged depletion from the soils. Nitrate behaves differently from mobility point of view, since the adsorption coefficient of the nitrate was set to 0 m3g-1, therefore it was assumed that nitrate is completely dissolved in the liquid phase and moves with the groundwater. Ammonium and nitrate also exceeded the contamination thresholds (0.5 mgL-1 and 50 mgL-1) in each scenario. In general, nitrate also depleted slowly from the investigated soils, being above the contamination threshold for approx. 1-4 years, depending on the scenario. Ammonium converts directly from NH4-N to NO3-N as a result of the nitrification process, following a first-order decay reaction, therefore its concentration dropped relatively quickly below the contamination threshold (3 months) in the soils.

Dátum:2021

Megjegyzések:The anaerobic digestion is a well-known method in waste management of biodegradable wastes to transform waste to energy. Proper digestion requires optimal fermentation conditions to improve the quality and yield of biogas. The objective of this study was to characterize the biodegradation process of synthetic and organic wastewater. Microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris) were utilized as a bioindicator for anaerobic digestion and monitoring of the fermentation process. Besides bioindication, the viability of the microalgae and the chlorophyll concentration were also assessed in such fermentation processes, since microalgae can be a potential source for biofuel production and a plant nutrient. The biodegradation process was studied for a month in an anaerobic tank reactor. The fermentation processes and lengths of the fermentation stages were successfully monitored and separately identified based on the pH and gas development. Furthermore, the amount and dynamics of the biogas yield also revealed that the fermentation process was about 510 hours in both cases. In contrast, increased temperature in thermophilic range (45?C) accelerates the degradation processes and resulted in shorter hydrolysis (60 hours), acetogenesis (24 hours) and longer methanogenesis (81 hours) stages, where higher biogas yield was also achieved (59.3%). During the process, the concentration of nutrients showed logarithmical tendencies and COD showed power tendency in time. The extent and the direction of the changes were in correspondence with microalgae activity. In thermophilic circumstances, living microalgae biomass dropped significantly without recovery therefore such an environment is not a viable option for microalgae growth. Moreover, dead microalgae biomass seems to act as a substrate for fermentation slightly increasing the concentration of some nutrients in the wastewater.

Megjegyzések:The storage and application of huge amounts of deep litter manure could be a serious issue generated by livestock systems. As broiler litter has high N and fiber content, pre-treatment is strongly recommended. Composting is one of the key method of pre-treatment. Due to Georgakakis and Krintas (2000), Hosoya composting system is suitable for composting by-products with unfavourable properties such as poultry litter. The end-product (composted and pelletized poultry litter (CPPL)) is appropriate alternative to the substitute for chemical fertilizers, due to its pathogen-free, safe-to-use features and high organic content while it meets the requirements of the European Green Deal's goals. In the frame of research maize (ZEA MAYS L.) plant test was carried out to get information about the effects of CPPL and ammonium nitrate (AN) fertilizer in pot experiment conditions. Measurements cover the following analyses: the length of the roots, stems, and seedlings, the dry matter content, germination percent, Vigour-index, and chlorophyll and carotenoid content. On the whole, it can be stated that CPPL had higher stimulating impacts on measured parameters (root length, dry matter content, Vigour index) in comparison to AN with higher N content.

Cím:Investigation of Heavy Metal Soil Pollution of Different Debrecen Soils in a Model Soil Column Experiment / Nagy Péter Tamás, Magyar Tamás, Fehér Zsolt, Tamás János, Tóth Florence Alexandra
Dátum:2025
Megjegyzések:Nowadays, heavy metals pollution is a notable threat to environment and human health. Due to its sustainability, toxicity and bio-accumulation, Heavy metals (HMs) have attracted extensive research attention. Unfortunately, we have little information on the soil conditions in Debrecen and its surrounding area. Therefore, in this study the soils of Debrecen, the second largest city in Hungary and the regional centre, which has been developing very dynamically in recent years were analysed in a model experiment. The study is of particular importance because of the significant industrial investments made in the city in recent years and the establishment of several new industries (automotive, battery production), which have significant land and water use and potential pollutant emissions. The present study was conducted in the Debrecen city of Hungary to model the heavy metal (Copper and Zinc) mobility in soil with different land use types as industrial, agricultural and urban using a soil column model experiment. The mobility of heavy metals in the vertical sections of different soils was investigated in the one month long experiment. In the pollution experiment, 100 mg/vessel, 500 mg/vessel and 1000 mg/vessel Cu and Zn doses were used by applying as Copper and Zinc Sulphate (CuSO4, ZnSO4) solutions and irrigated according to the typical summer period of the region. Soil texture recorded from particle size distribution curves of studied soil types are classified according to the USDA classification. Soil saturation hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) recorded in the experiment. After the experiment the EDTA soluble Cu and Zn concentration were measured in two soil layers (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm). According to irrigation experiments results, there was a wide range of EDTA ? soluble Cu concentrations across all soil types and samples indicating varying levels of Cu contamination. The concentrations were increased dramatically from control samples to the other soil samples within each soil type according to the used pollution dose. In most cases, the upper soil layer (0-20cm) was showed significantly higher EDTA-soluble Cu concentrations compared to the deeper layer (20-40cm). When evaluating the zinc test results, similar conclusions can be drawn as in the case of copper. It can be generally stated that increasing zinc contamination doses resulted in higher zinc concentrations, especially in the upper part of the soil layer. It was also observed that the results differed among various soil types due to their different absorption capacities.

Megjegyzések:Meat chicken (broiler) industry continuously increasing all over the world. Due to it, the amount of waste from the chicken industry is also increasing. Therefore, more efficient conversion of chicken manure to organic fertilizer is key problem all over the world. Therefore, the aims of present study are to investigate the changes in temperature and moisture content during composting of chicken manure in a tank fermentation system and create a model to describe the biodegradation processes. In this study, Hydrus software was used for modelling the moisture and temperature distribution in the oval tank during the decomposing processes. It was found that the studied oval tank fermenter can be divided into two main parts considering to the changing of temperature and moisture level. In the first phase - after the intake - where the rate of biodegradation is high there is a heterogeneous temperature zone with decreasing moisture content. Moreover, in this stage a special temperature profile was found at the cross-sectional view of the tank. The second phase was more homogenous both in temperature and moisture content. This stage is the weak fermentation part of the technology results an elongated post fermentation section. It was established, that the changes of temperature and moisture content along the tank fermenter are the same and there is a strong connection between them in the examined period. Our results pointed out that the initial turning and mixing results in a large temperature and moisture content drop and later there is sufficient time for composting to take place. The authors recommend that this system could be used as an efficient treatment for chicken manure materials to decompose and get a valuable base organic fertilizer.

Megjegyzések:Own-developed organic based soil conditioner composites were tested in a four-month-long incubation experiment. The composite has consisted of fermented chicken manure as a base material, with bentonite and a superabsorbent polymer as additives. This study aimed to determine their effects on soil N mineralization, and the changes in the amount of soil mineralized nitrogen forms, cumulative mineralized nitrogen (Nmin), and C/N ratio in a sandy soil (Lamellic Arenosol) at two different soil water holding capacity (SWHC) levels (40 w/w% and 60 w/w%) and layers. Potentially mineralized nitrogen (PMN), net mineralization (NMR), and nitrification rates (NNR) were also calculated to study the effectiveness of treatments. Soil NH4-N decreased by 50-70% while NO3-N increased by 150-200% in the treated soil, so the nitrate/ammonium ratio was changed from 1/3 to 2/1 during the incubation. Nmin gradually increased and was described by a linear tendency (R?0.99) for both soil layers and SWHC levels. Composite treatments increased significantly the potentially mineralized nitrogen, and net mineralization rates by 2-4 times and nitrification rates by 40-240% compared to the control. Applied composites enhanced the mineralized proportion of total nitrogen content by 2-6%. It was found that the composites were more effective at lower SWHC level and in their application layer than chicken manure alone. Overall, the developed organic-based composites can cope with changing soil circumstances that could help to mitigate the negative effects of climatic anomalies, especially in arid areas with limited water resources by improving soil nutrient supply, thus contributing to sustainable nutrient management. Soil conditioner composites were tested in an incubation experiment to estimate their effects on soil N mineralization. Treatments affected the ratio of mineralized N forms and caused a higher mineralization rate. Composite treatments increased significantly the PMN, NMR, and NNR values compared to the control and chicken manure alone. Composites could help mitigate the negative effects of climatic anomalies, especially in arid areas and with poor nutrient supply by improving soil N availability.

Megjegyzések:Self-developed soil conditioner composites containing fermented chicken manure as a raw material alongside bentonite and super-absorbent polymer in different doses and combinations were tested in a 112 day long soil incubation experiment.
