Megjegyzések:A stalagmite was collected in northern Hungary from the Vacska Cave, where monitoring and ventilation-based site selection had been conducted. The stalagmite covers the 10-8 ka (relative to AD 1950) period, including the so-called 8.2 ka event, and showed preceding signs of climate change that were evaluated by petrographic observations, C-14 activities, Sr concentrations, and stable isotope compositions of calcite and inclusion-hosted water. Comparisons of speleothem records show that isotope peaks at ca. 8.5 ka are related to a regional climate anomaly, rather than to a continental-scale event. In accordance with regional proxy records, the 8.2 ka event was associated with a series of temperature and precipitation amount changes, starting with cooling and a reduction in the winter-to-summer precipitation ratio, and then becoming a humid and warm phase at 8.15 ka. X-ray diffraction-based crystallinity parameter (FWHM) values provided evidence for diagenetic alteration of the stable oxygen isotope compositions of inclusion waters. Nevertheless, the stable hydrogen isotope compositions of inclusion waters and the oxygen isotope values of the host calcite revealed elevated d-excess values, and therefore increased Mediterranean moisture contribution during the 8.2 ka event, which indirectly indicate the southward displacement of moisture transport from the Atlantic Ocean.

Cím:Age and Depositional Temperature of Quaternary Travertine Spring Mounds from Slovakia / Vieira, Daniella S. C.; Pivko, Daniel; Rinyu, László; Palcsu, László; Kiss, Gabriella I.; Hu, Hsun-Ming; Shen, Chuan-Chou; Kele, Sándor

Megjegyzések:Travertine spring mounds are common in Slovakia; however, their age and depositional temperature are still poorly known. Our study is the first multimethodological investigation involving stable carbon, oxygen, and clumped isotope (& UDelta;(47)) analyses and U-Th age determination of travertine mounds from different locations in Slovakia (Santovka, Dudince, Cerin, Besenova, LiptovskATIN SMALL LETTER Y WITH ACUTE Jan, Liptovske Sliace, Vysne Ruzbachy, Ganovce, and Siva Brada) to provide information about their age, origin, precipitation conditions, and temperature. The positive & delta;C-13 values imply that the parent water was charged with heavy CO2 of deep origin. The & delta;O-18 values of spring waters range between -11.4 & PTSTHOUSND; and -8.9 & PTSTHOUSND;, whereas the & delta;H-2 values vary from -80.5 & PTSTHOUSND; to -58.3, indicating a meteoric origin for spring waters. Clumped isotope compositions (& UDelta;(47)) correspond to a deposition temperature between 4 & DEG;C and 32 & DEG;C. The U-Th age data of the studied travertines vary from 1.2 (Liptovske Sliace) to 301 ka (Dudince). Our results can serve as a basis for further detailed geochronological and geochemical studies to reconstruct the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment during travertine deposition periods in Slovakia since the mid-Pleistocene transition.
