The Covid-19 epidemic and Sports Consumption: Evidence from England, Hungary, and Nigeria / Umar Gambo Adamu; Ildikó Balatoni
Dátum:

ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
The purpose of this study was to compare and identify differences among the populations in Physical Activity engagement, leisure-related activities, sports consumption, sitting time at work, screen time during the Covid-19 (DuCov) period in comparison with the periods before Covid-19 (BeCov) and after Covid-19 (AfCov), in England, Hungary, and Nigeria. A modified version of the IPAQ instrument and validated questionnaire for sports consumption was used to collect data from respondents in these three countries and further categorized based on individual country, sports fans, gender, and combination or comparisons between the countries: England, Hungary, and Nigeria. A reliability test was conducted, and a descriptive analysis and non-parametric t-test were used to determine significance as well as mean rankings. The results show significant differences between the periods BeCov, DuCov, and AfCov and further highlight the extent of the differences through the rankings. Although we found similarities of results from the three countries especially on people's healthy lifestyle through sedentary by increasing daily sitting and daily screen time DuCov period. However, there were also differences on how the respondents from these three countries consumed sport, engaging in leisure-related activities, before, during, and after Covid-19 period. Generally, it can be concluded that the Covid-19 pandemic has drastically reduced PA engagement, leisure-related activities, and sports consumption. However, an improved situation is realized to some extent in the AfCov period.

The Effect of Covid-19 on Health Behavior and Physical Activity in Youth : a review / Umar Gambo Adamu, Ildikó Balatoni
Dátum:
2023
Megjegyzések:
The aim of our paper was to independently, critically, analyse, and summarize studies that were previously conducted addressing the change in health behaviour such as physical activity, sedentary behaviour, social and gender aspects, and sport consumption during the Covid-19 restriction with a view of identifying some important gaps that existing literature presented. Decrease in physical activity, increased sedentary lifestyle, increased screen time, increased stress and anxiety level and decreased social connections were all found. However, an improved dietary intake and sleep quality was seen. The results also provided an insight on the study gaps that potentially require further assessment. It is concluded based on the reviewed articles that health behaviour changes were recorded during Covid-19 epidemic restrictions.

Covid-19 pandemic and the changes in physical activity of adolescents / Adamu Umar Gambo, Balatoni Ildikó
Dátum:
2023
Megjegyzések:
Objectives: The main aim of our investigation was to analyze and summarize critically with deeper understanding of previous studies conducted on physical activity (PA), sport, and other health behaviors during the Covid-19 epidemic with a view of establishing new studies through literature gaps identification. Methods: The literature search was designed with a pre-prepared study protocol approved by two independent reviewers and experts in the field of physical health and sports. The search used two databases, Web of Science and Science Direct. Selection criteria were followed based on the study objective. Keywords search results were verified by the independent reviewers resulting after exclusion criteria based on quality checks in 67 studies that were finally included in the study. Findings: While most studies concluded that the epidemic was associated with decrease in PA, increased sedentary lifestyle, stress, and anxiety level, some identified an improved dietary intake and sleep quality. Our study, on the other hand, highlights that critical geographic inequality exists in the literature in respect to the underdeveloped countries requiring further studies to be conducted in these areas to fill these existing gaps. Discussion: Aspects of physical activity, sports, health behaviors, demographics, and sampling were analyzed in the 67 included studies in relation to Covid-19 epidemic and provided their results that might form the basis of future investigations. Conclusion: While a decrease in PA was generally detected, an improved dietary behavior was identified in some studies. However, large geographic inequalities in respect to where the relevant studies were conducted exists.

Impact of inflation on sports consumption: A study on fitness facilities / Ildikó Balatoni; Adamu Umar Gambó
Dátum:
2023
Megjegyzések:
Fitness centers, as micro and small enterprises, are important to the economic development of a country and the health of its citizens. However, the small size of most fitness centers makes their existence precarious. This study aims to assess the impact of inflation on fitness centers. The researchers chose Debrecen, a community in Hungary with a considerable fitness sector, as the center of their investigation. Telephone interviews using structured questionnaires were conducted among all twenty fitness centers operating in Debrecen. Answers were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Most respondents indicated that the price of their services had increased due to energy costs. One-third believed these increases negatively affected members' physical activity (PA). In contrast, two-thirds indicated that customers were willing to accept the price increase. Despite rising costs, workforce reductions seldom occurred. Instead, fitness cent ers were modernized to maintain attendance and reduce energy costs, and became increasingly active online, mainly through social media. It is concluded that price increases did not signifi cantly affect physical activity participation.

The Importance of Physical Activity in Preventing Fatigue and Burnout in Healthcare Workers / Balatoni Ildikó, Szépné Henrietta Varga, Kiss Tímea, Adamu Umar Gambo, Szulc Adam Michał, Csernoch László
Dátum:
2023
ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
The workers of the health sector are important to the country's economy in many ways. Healthy and rested workers are highly valuable to the public health sector and give a good perception of their work to patients and society. It is thus important to have a sufficient number of healthy working staff in healthcare institutions who do not have work fatigue and burnout. A total of 987 employees-doctors, professional staff, and others-of a large healthcare institution in Hungary voluntarily participated in a survey regarding their lifestyle and physical activity habits and answered the questions anonymously. Women reported less leisure time (p < 0.02), with 54.9% of female respondents saying that they did not exercise regularly, and fatigue was more common among them (p < 0.001). In this respect, the healthcare workers' responses did not differ from those of the overall population. The most common sports were cycling (17.7%), running (15.4%), and working out in a gym (12.3%). Reasons for not participating in sports included lack of time (70.2%) and fatigue (43.9%) as the most frequent responses. Healthcare workers are exposed to a number of risks that require particular attention to maintain their health. Employers should thus focus on implementing programs that prevent burnout and promote healthy lifestyles.
