Megjegyzések:
Soil has the ability to serve as a universal sink, meaning it may absorb contaminants from the environment. Additionally, plant leaves can also be used as indicators of environmental contamination. In our study, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) was used to assess metal accumulation in the soil and leaves of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica) in Faisalabad, Pakistan. We analyzed the primary physical and chemical characteristics of the surface layer of soil in urban, suburban, and rural areas along an urbanization gradient. The ICP-OES technique was used to analyze the following elements: Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn. The highest concentration of all elements was found in soil samples from urban areas, with an increasing tendency along with the urbanization gradient. A significant difference was found along the urbanization gradient on the plant leaves except for Cd, Cu, and Zn; a high level of pollution was measured for Ba, Pb, Co, Ni, Cr, and Cd in the urban area. We also calculated the bioaccumulation factor (BAF), but no clear pattern was found. Our findings show that high concentrations in soil do not always turn into higher plant uptake for plants. Our findings suggest that traffic and industrial emissions are likely the main cause of the metals in Faisalabad, because their concentration is higher than their background concentration. Our results also suggest that elemental analysis of soil and plant leaves is an appropriate indicator of environmental contamination.

Plants are especially useful as biological indicators to assess air pollution and the effects of urbanisation. The aim of this study was to investigate tree species' sensitivity to air pollution using the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI), the dust content (PM10) of leaves, and the heavy metal concentration of leaves. Sampling sites were in a city park (urban area), a location on the edge of the city (suburban area), and a forested location (rural area) along an urbanisation gradient in the city of Vienna in Austria. Leaf samples were collected from Acer platanoides, Fraxinus excelsior, and Quercus robur tree species. The APTI was determined by measuring the content of relative water ascorbic acid and chlorophyll, and the pH of leaf extracts. We found significant difference among species in their relative water content, pH, and content of ascorbic acid and chlorophyll Additionally, we found significant differences in chlorophyll content and pH based on sampling site. The highest chlorophyll content was found in A. platanoides. There was a significant difference among species in Al, Ba, Cr, Ni, and Zn concentrations in each stage of urbanisation. Based on APTI values, the studied species were sensitive indicators of air pollution; thus, they are useful bioindicator species, and they are suitable for air pollution monitoring. We demonstrated the effects of urbanisation with these bioindicator species with elevated PM10, Al, Ba, Cu, Fe, Sr, and Zn concentrations in urban area samples.

Megjegyzések:
Elemental composition of dust deposited onto leaf surfaces was analysed in this study. Leaves of oleander (Nerium oleander L.) were collected for testing the environmental quality from Tripoli (Libya), Tajura (suburban of Tripoli) and Ghadames (remote area). Elemental analysis was carried out by ICP-OES. Principle component analysis (PCA) and enrichment factors were used for characterizing and estimating the level of the pollution. Samples from Tripoli were found to have higher contents of Pb, Zn, Cu in comparison with suburban (Tajura) and remote (Ghadames) areas. Our results demonstrated that the leaves of Nerium oleander were useful indicator to assessment of atmospheric deposition. Only limited information is available on environmental issues in Libya and the results reported here may contribute significantly to the assessment of the quality of the environment in this country.

Megjegyzések:
We tested the effect of urbanization on air pollution based on the chlorophyll-a content of Celtis occidentalis leaves along an urbanization gradient (urban, suburban and rural areas) in Debrecen, Hungary. Chlorophyll-a content of Celtis occidentalis, Acer campestre, and Corylus avellana were compared to test which species is the most useful to study the effects of urbanization. Furthermore, the effects of washing solutions (distilled water, tap water, and rainwater) on chlorophyll-a content of tree leaves were also tested during sample preparation. Chlorophyll-a was extracted from leaf samples with acetone, and it was measured using a spectrophotometer. Along the urbanization gradient, chlorophyll-a content of C. occidentalis leaves was the lowest in the urban area; thus, this species proved to be an effective indicator of anthropogenic emission load. Differences were not significant among species in the suburban and rural areas, where the level of air pollution was moderate. We found that effects of the washing solutions on chlorophyll-a content did not differ significantly from each other. Thus, tap water can be used safely to clean the leaf surface, without significant influence on chlorophyll-a. Our study demonstrated that the chlorophyll-a content of leaves was a useful indicator to assess the level of air pollution.

Megjegyzések:
The effect of decreased mobility on air quality due to the COVID-19 period was analysed from 2018 to 2022 in Debrecen city, Hungary. The PM10 concentrations were analysed at three sampling sites. We compared PM10 concentrations from 2018 to 2022 during three periods: pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic. We also studied the effect of lockdowns on the PM10 concentrations during the pandemic period. Over the 2018-2022 period, the concentration of PM10 decreased across all sites, suggesting improved air quality. Significant differences were found in PM10 levels among the pre-pandemic (before February of 2020), pandemic (from March of 2020 to February 2022), and postpandemic period (after March of 2022) in the case of all stations. Significant differences were also found among years and stations during the lockdown periods. Drastically significant decreases were found only in January of 2021 in the case of all stations. Our results also demonstrated that the reduction in emissions took place simultaneously, as exceptional weather conditions such as wind direction and wind speed were observed in the year 2020, which have been highlighted by an unusually warm pre-lockdown February and springtime drought. PM10 levels indicated heterogeneous patterns characterized by variations including decreases, slight increases, or stability, contingent upon the specific sampling sites under consideration. These findings emphasize the complex dynamics of air pollutants and stress the necessity for ongoing monitoring and targeted interventions to alleviate detrimental effects on air quality and public health.

Ecological Assessment of Particulate Material (PM5 and PM10) in Urban Habitats / Simon Edina, Molnár Vanda Éva, Tóthmérész Béla, Szabó Szilárd
Dátum:

ISSN:

Megjegyzések:
Trees are especially useful biological indicators. We tested the suitability of tree leaves (Common Lime) to assess PM5 and PM10 deposition in the three summer months of 2018 in Debrecen city, Hungary. We also tested the usefulness of the cheap and simple gravimetric method to assess the PM deposition, and compared to the expensive, but standard laser diffraction method. We found significant differences between the concentrations of PM10 deposited on tree leaves, and on dust traps. A significant difference was found in the concentration of PM5 only in July. A significant difference was also found in the concentration of PM10 among months based on leaves and dust traps. For PM5 there was a significant difference among months based on leaves deposition. We found a significant positive correlation between the PM10 concentration deposited on leaves and on dust traps. A positive correlation was found between the concentration of PM based on the gravimetric and laser diffraction measurement methods. Our findings pointed out the particulate material's washing by rain from leaves; thus, dust deposition on the surface of leaves is limited. Our results demonstrated that trees play an important role in the mitigation of air pollution, and they are a useful indicator of PM deposition for biomonitoring studies.
