Megjegyzések:We introduced in a previous CogInfoCom publication our IT technical language learning material (ITLLM) developed for teaching the specialized use of the English language relating to information technology. This material is an inherent part of the 3D virtual library project started in 2013 in the framework of the Cognitive Infocommunications research. While the hypertext (or 2D) implementation of the virtual library including the ITLLM is available freely in the internet, the 3D presentation of the materials can only be viewed via the MaxWhere Seminar System where the current 3D version of ITLLM uses the Fly Podium 3D space.In our paper first we summarize briefly the main features of the ITLLM and the virtual library project which provides a general framework of the language learning material. Then we will present in detail the new improvements of the ITLLM including, in the first place, its focus on the sentence and test-based vocabulary development. The sentence focus is expressed in specific tables which present both sentence or verb patterns and synonyms (or, to be more exact, hyponyms) which can be used in specific parts of the sentences as possible alternatives. As regards the practical aspects of language learning, the memorization of the technical language content provided in the learning material is facilitated by interactive random tests which present the example sentences randomly and offer the language learner a task to guess one or more hidden words in the currently presented sentence (working more or less like an "interactive flashcard").In order to show the academic impact of the developed learning material, we also give a short but informative report on the application of ITLLM in higher education, specifically in the technical language courses held at the University of Nyíregyháza and the University of Debrecen, Hungary.

Megjegyzések:In our study we would like to give a short overview of the 3D virtual library project and its application for English language learning at an advanced level. The original data model (3DVLM) of the project was built on the hierarchical classification system of the ancient Library of Alexandria which had been elaborated by the prominent librarian and scholar-poet Callimachus in the 3rd century BC. The current implementation of the model makes use of the innovative 3D presentation features of the MaxWhere Seminar System. We would like to improve the English language skills of students, to help them develop reading comprehension in a foreign language, and to motivate them to read classical literature and poetry. To support these goals of the 3DVLM we compiled a bilingual language learning material for Hungarian students to improve their language skills and competence in English at an advanced level. At the first organization level, we arranged selected passages of literary texts according to the designated keywords of the texts. The structure and organization of the learning material were primarily based on the hypertextual relationships established between the entries of the keywords and the preprocessed bilingual texts. At the second organization level, we considered the established entries of the keywords as separate nodes of a more or less scale-free network. While providing as many relationships as possible between the nodes of the network we tried to preserve the scale-free characteristics of the structure. We used the Google Translate service as an excellent testing tool to check the understanding of selected English words, phrases, and sentences in the developed bilingual learning material through their Hungarian translations.

The current implementation of the virtual library model exploits the 3D features of the MaxWhere Seminar System. In our study we would like to summarize the classroom experiences that we brought together in teaching English as a second language for students of computer science majors at the Faculty of Informatics, University of Debrecen in the academic year of 2020 and 2021. Our main purpose was to improve the students` linguistic knowledge and to collect their opinions and suggestions about the content of the learning material of our virtual library and where they think is necessary to modify it. Summarizing their views, we decided to add further vocabulary items, contexts and explanations to the material. In addition, their achievements proved that successful language learning needs carefully prepared tests and exercises which support self-assessment and increase motivation. In general, the more tests are available the more efficient the learning process is. But preparing good and varied tests manually is a relatively slow and exhausting work. Therefore, we intended to use JavaScript technology to develop an algorithm which can generate tests and exercises automatically, based on the knowledge base of the virtual library. This material has been developed in the framework of the 3D virtual library project started in 2013 as part of the Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom) research. The current version of the virtual library has a hypertext or 2D implementation which is freely available in the internet. The advanced 3D presentation of the material uses the 3D features of the MaxWhere Seminar System, arranging and displaying the content of the language learning material in the Fly Podium 3D space. First, we provide a short overview on the virtual library project as an introduction to the IT technical language learning material. In the next section we describe the background and aim of the development of the material, then we present in detail the organization and structure of the 2D and 3D implementation of the learning material. Some inventions and ideas may deserve attention such as the topic map of selected terms, concepts, and texts functioning as a navigational tool, the interactive tests (where the first one is for practice, and the second one is actually a memory game), and the mapping mechanism of the hypertext-based material into the 3D virtual space of the MaxWhere system.

The current version of the 3DVLM uses the 3D features and the hypertext-based presentation capabilities of the MaxWhere Seminar System. The latter is especially important because our material is based on web technology and organized so that it is going to be a scale-free network of interconnected nodes. First, we would like to provide a short overview on the virtual library in general, then introduce the organization and structure of the bilingual language learning material we have developed to support English language learning for Hungarian learners at an advanced level. The learning material is based on selected passages from classical literary works, presented both in English and in Hungarian, which we think may improve both English language skills and cultural awareness of language learners through the background knowledge they acquire. In order to check and test the bilingual language learning material we used the Google Translate service which proved to be a very efficient tool for both improving the learning material and deepening the language learning process.

Megjegyzések:In our paper we introduce a bilingual language learning material developed in the framework of the so-called three dimensional virtual library model (3DVLM). This model inspired by the history and organization of the famous ancient Library of Alexandria forms the basis of the virtual library project which started about eight years ago as part of the Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom) research. The current version of the 3DVLM uses the excellent 3D features of the MaxWhere Seminar System which makes it suitable for both individual learning and classroom use. In the following, we would like to introduce first the basic framework of our development, then describe in detail the data structure and organization of the developed bilingual language learning material. The basic idea of the material is to present selected phrases and contexts from classical literary works in English and from their parallel translations in Hungarian in order to improve both the language skills and background knowledge of Hungarian language learners at an advanced level. We found that using web technology was especially useful for developing the language learning material and the developed hypertext structure formed a scale-free network of interconnected nodes.
