Megjegyzések:Large cities are becoming increasingly valuable in the spatial structure of globalized economies. Although these centers vary significantly regarding population, economic structure, and income conditions, they?compared to their surroundings?generally show a higher productivity level, a higher rate of employment, higher education, and higher innovation performance. However, this metropolization and concentration of the economy in large cities made the development of cities regarded as medium-sized on an international scale an issue of competitiveness in Europe, characterized by dense town networks, a small number of metropolises, and a significant weight of medium- and smallsized towns. However, one of the main preconditions for achieving success in this competition is to form a comprehensive and complex concept with a significant emphasis on economic development. Therefore, the aim of our study is to analyze the local economic development strategies for the last three decades, as elaborated in Debrecen. In the framework of our empirical analysis, we examined how different mainstream concepts appear in local development strategies and which development objectives are determined by the local strategies. Furthermore, we also aimed to identify possible changes in ideas about city roles by referring to the organization of economic space.

Megjegyzések:The economic restructuring (deindustrialization) after the change of regime resulted in extensive underused industrial areas also in Debrecen, the second largest city of Hungary. They show different evolution dynamics depending on the judgement of their broader environment as economic location. The development of these brownfield areas is especially interesting at the western and southern edge of the city, where the most important greenfield investments (Northwestern Economic Belt, Debrecen Science Park, Debrecen Regional and Innovation Industrial Park, Southern Industrial Park) next to the motorway and the airport were carried out. Our article examines the functional change of the area, where the concrete panel factory for prefabricated houses was formerly located, and its surroundings. The work is based on field research as well as on collection, analysis and cartographic visualisation of enterprise data. As result, the renewal of economic functions and the predominant role of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises can be emphasized. Regarding the internal structure of the economic zone we can identify also the influence of the former activities, enterprises functioning there before the change of regime.

Megjegyzések:Nowadays more and more attention is devoted to the spatial development of the location of sports facilities within cities. The main aim of our paper is to observe the most important spatial characteristics of their development in Hungarian cities of county rank. In these cities three main periods of development of sports facilities can be observed. Larger sports facilities were constructed especially on the edge of cities or in the suburbs, while in the case of smaller facilities a bigger role was played by locations within the city boundaries. As regards the factors influencing the location of sports facilities, the most important role was played by the location of available land areas, besides accessibility and from the mid-1960s links to existing facilities can be mentioned as well.

Megjegyzések:As a result of the increasing significance of environmental protection, which can be observed in the past decades, according to international trends, the leaders of Hungarian settlements have also begun to pay more attention to this area. An important role in the management of settlements is played by municipal councils elected by the population, whose decisions are prepared by various sectoral committees. Despite the fact that the scope of the committees' work is often wider than can be deduced from their names, we think it stands to reason to examine to what extent environmental protection are present in the names of municipal council committees.In the light of the above, this paper emphasises the following questions with respect to Hungarian settlements with a population of at least 5,000: to what extent is environmental protection present in the committee structures of the municipal councils of local governments and which factors influence the presence of environmental protection in the committee structure of local governments?The findings of the present paper can be summarised in the following major statements:? Municipal councils of settlements consider the presence of environmental protection in the committee structure as important, but they primarily deal with this area in combination with other sectors.? Environmental protection is most frequently dealt with in the same committee with the areas of urban development.? The presence of environmental protection in the committee structure shows correlation with three factors, of which the strongest link can be found in case of the volume of traffic passing through the settlements.
