Megjegyzések:The rich and varied bronze finds from the burials and hoards of the Transdanubian Encrusted Pottery Culture and Early Tumulus Culture, discovered in a smaller geographical area around Tatabánya (Hungary, Komárom-Esztergom County), provided a good opportunity for the comparison of the metalwork of the two successive periods, including the possibility of observing the similarities and differences between items from hoards and the grave goods from burials. The SEM-EDS chemical composition analysis focused on two directions: the results of the average (field) composition analyses allowed the classification of the samples. With phase analyses, the present phases could be identified, which were used as additional information for the metallographic examinations. During the metallographic examination, the microstructure analysis provided information mainly about the manufacturing process, including the question of whether the object was made by casting, plastic deformation after casting, or perhaps subjected to heat treatment a?er the metal was shaped. Additionally, the corrosion processes could also be followed even after the objects had fallen out of use. Data and observations indicated the application of different raw materials and diverse technologies. Evaluating these together with the excavation observations and historical background, the differences between the two consecutive periods were well established, both in terms of the raw materials, as well as methods used in the processing of the bronze. A comparison of the bronze objects of the hoards and burials also revealed that di?erences are likely to be observed, not only related to the types according to function (tools/ornaments), but especially the ritual of the burial in connection with the disposal of the jewellery.

Megjegyzések:The preferred method in natural scientific examination of Bronze-Age metallic artefacts is non-destructive surface analysis. One of the scopes of this type of investigations is the chemical analysis of the alloys. But the chemical composition of the surface is modified by surface phenomena such as micro- and macro-segregations or corrosion. The chemical analysis alone can show a different picture about the metal. This study collects and introduces some examples from a detailed research where the metallography of the objects shows different results and reveals the origin of the differences in bulk and surface analysis.

Megjegyzések:A double burial of the Baden culture from Tatabánya-Delphi (northern Transdanubia, Hungary) - A case study of the Dentalium beads of the Baden culture and their interpretation. In 2016, Julianna Cseh excavated a small settlement part of the classical Baden culture in the inner city area of Tatabánya. The excavated features included a double burial furnished with a rich array of grave goods, particularly of beads made of Dentalium shells. The crouched man and woman interred in the grave embraced each other tightly. The woman wore an ornate funerary garment and shell jewellery (headdress, veil, necklace, girdle). A triangular arrowhead of Úrkút radiolarite was found in her abdomen. Dentalium beads have been found in the burials of the formal/extramural cemeteries investigated at Alsónémedi and Budakalász in Hungary, and at Ratzersdorf in Austria. Their archaeological occurrence, geological sources, shapes and different use has been interpreted variously, ranging from special grave goods, prestige goods, luxury items and adornments of funerary costume to the measure of value in local communities and Late Copper Age society - a commodity used as currency in exchanges. Our interdisciplinary research is but a small contribution to the vast literature on the huge Baden complex; however, it reports on the first modern in situ observation of shell finds, enabling a detailed reconstruction of female funerary costume and its possible role.
